Ok, off to bed...
...and it's puking down with no sign of stopping.
What's frustrating is that tomorrow all the runs I know that I shouldn't go near because of the avalanche risk will be tracked out by the idiots who don't even know what an avalanche is...
...ah, well...
|
that''s actually what causes so many of the problems - those not in the know go on the avalanche prone slopes, and those in the know have to go on them to beat them to the good skiing!

David Murdoch, Thanks for the replies.... David, hopefully the recent high temps have filled the resovoirs a bit with all the melt water from the snow at new year?
It would be facisnating to know from those in resort whether the cannons operate over the nexy few days
Anyway, we shall see, I'm off to Morzine for a few days in a weeks time so it will 'interesting' to see what conditions are like - I'll report back on my return....

bigtoe, That's a good website Bigtoe.... I see what you mean about that webcam, but I'm not sure if it's a cloud of soon to be snow emitting from a cannon or just a cloud 'ordinaire'... I'll keep watching it during the day to be more sure.
Looking at the snow reort on the site they have snow depths as 25 village and 45 top, as opposed to the previos 0/15 so that gives an accruate summary of how much snow fell last night.... looks still to be coming down off and on as well. Only 14 of 61 runs open though - I guess as David M stated, that could be all that the pisteurs have managed to bash so far.

I spoke to Les Gets Tourist Office this morning - they were much cheerier than last week! 45cm fell overnight apparently and they have 25% of the lifts running - hoping to get more going over today as they bash it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for somewhere to stay for a couple of nights ? Preferably in Morzine, but I will have the car so could be elsewhere.
The central reservation website doesn't find anything for this weekend and they don't answer emails.
I can start working my way through the list of hotels, but it might be quicker with a few pointers.

rjs,
Not sure how many of you there are or how flexible on location, but my chalet in Les Carroz (part of Grand Massif/Flaine ski area) is available for the weeks commencing Saturday 27th Jan and Sat 3rd Feb - would be very happy to talk prices etc.

rjs, Try www.ardent-sports .com , if you go into their site and click on partners you'll find some very helpful Chalet owners around the Morzine / Ardent area.

rjs, you want this weekend? If you can do a couple of days from next Sunday (4 Feb) then I know a nice place 10 minutes from Morzine at Drouzin Le Mont where you can have fully catered (incl 4 course evening meal and free booze until bedtime). Also will do free transport from chalet to wherever the snow is. And there's a sauna. They're full this week, but empty for 4 to 11 Feb. Drouzin le Mont has its own small and quiet ski area with a nice mix of blacks, reds, greens and blues and cheap passes. If anyone is interested then look here www.chaletwensam.com and check out the availability and the offers pages. Sam and Wendy are a great couple to stay with - we're back there shortly and I'm about to book something for end of March if I can get a few people together..

rjs, I have booked into the Alte Neve hotel in Morzine for this year. Looks OK on there web site but can't give a better recomendation other than that as I have never stayed there. Swimming pool, Gym and suana half board about 70 euros a night i think. I have heard they often have rooms avalible for short stays. You will find them through the Morzin web then scroll down from Estate Agents to hotels . Good luck finding something.

Quick update from the Chatel side - conditions are great at last. Powder off piste, in some places very deep, and the pistes are finally back to being white rather than brown and stony. Everybody is smiling!!! Hope that this is finally the start of winter....

I noticed that still most of the pistes in Les Gets + Pleney are closed. Is this because there wasn't enough snow? Or do they just not have enough lift operators / pisteurs? Any idea if they'll be opening more over the next couple of days or making artificial stuff to get them open?

philgeorge999, I spoke to the Tourist Office this morning. They had (at around 11.00 a.m.) 25% of the lifts open and were working on more. 45 cm of snow overnight, with temporary shortage of workers this morning, meant a bit slow bashing the remaining pistes, but hopeful of getting more open by end of the day.

A brief update for anyone who is interested. We had about 30cms in the village last night. I skied as high as possible seeing as there was little base off piste below 1800m. The Fornet and Chavannette areas had about 45cms of new snow I would guess. The good thing is the avalanche risk was not too high for the Chablais region, three out of five which is about as low as you would normally get after a bit of a dump. Most of the skiing was open including Machon and the wall which is always nice in powder.
The off piste it is mixed. Low down there are v.many barely covered rocks and trees which make it a little hazardous. Higher up is better, on steeper terrain though I found a tendancy to break through to the base layer of ice. Better than rocks though.Conditions on piste have been transformed and anyone heading out next week should have a great time.
It seems by the weekend most of the Les Gets skiing will be reopened, hopefully for good this time.
cheers

We stayed with Ski Oui at their new Chalet Jules (refurb'd for this season) and it's fantastic. Free bar too!!! If you can get in there I can tell you it's lovely. It's about a 5 minute shuttle up to the Ardent bubble in their minibus. Give the bloke at SkiOui.co.uk a ring - he seemed very accomodating.

That is good news Anniepen - it looks like they're wisely making the most of today and tomorrow to build as big a base as possible while it's sooo cold, before what I guess will be a VERY busy w/end as 1000's of frustrated skiers arrive, and one that might even last to peak season without much of a top-up.

Hi folks, apologies for going quiet, but our broadband went down yesterday morning.
It's all been said, so I won't repeat it again. Superb snow. And today was the best day of the season so far.
We skied in Plaine Dranse today and the snow was superb up top - although below the Linga bubble was horrible. For those of you who know the area - it was a "four Renard" day. It was superb - if you ignore the impact of the rocks underneath the snow.
I am, however, very cautious about the off-piste at the moment as I saw a small boarder-invoked slab avalanche yesterday near the top of Chaux des Roses.
Saying that, I need to find a real local to show us the off-piste in that area. I could show myself, but there are so many terrain traps...

Best day of the season...

PhillipStanton, Ha! - that's priceless. I thought some of the webcams looked plastered in an icy glaze as well. Phillip, do you have an idea of how much depth of coverage a snow cannon can add to a run/area. My understanding is that the cannon makes a big pile of snow which is then spread around by the bashers. Would you say a nights cannon operation adds - say - 2cm to the area covered?
TIA

PhillipStanton, I too was stuck drinking coffee in Ardent waiting for the sodding lift, you weren't the guy surrounded by a bevvy of blond beauties were you? Alternatively, who are you shadowing at the mo?
SP1R1T, I ended up skiing in Les Gets today. Surprisingly, off the sides/between the pistes was ok. On piste was a little patchy but probably as good as it has been this year. Avoriaz and beyond definitely better.
David Murdoch, how many Renards do you think you'll be able to do on Sunday?
cheers all

zzz, I would imagine that depends on the numbers of glasses of petit rouge drunk on Saturday evening. Reminds me, must go shopping tomorrow And I may need to acquire some skis from Eric Sat morning as my 9Xs have died...
Just as a point of principle, (and this is for you too Mr Stanton), I have spent the so far best day of the season at my desk. So no complaints about the irregularity of the Ardent bubble please. Or how tough it is to have to go skiing in Les Gets (good for them opening up though, well done).

David Murdoch - I should add as a postscript that I saw someone do the lower section of Renard in three turns yesterday. Yep, three. I've got to say that it was b%&(^y impressive...
