@ousekjarr, I did check my accommodation agreement and it’s 80% roughly a week out and 100% thereafter. That’s a pound of flesh for me.
Kaprun is an option. I also thought Obertauern would work. I don’t mind the drive. Kitzski is OK on snow.
I am also considering finding cheaper lodging in Innsbruck and then hitting Soelden and the other resorts in the general area.
I’d probably end up drinking a fair amount of schnapps to compensate for the missing pound of flesh though…

I've been going the rounds on illnesses. Flu/Cold type illness in Mid October, rolled in to Covid in Mid November, and then I came back from Hintertux in Mid December with some horrible Flu/Cold type bug. Have been coughing up half a lung every day as well since the October bug.
Guess it comes from a lack of socialising and mixing with others over the last couple of winters.

Staying at tatmanstours apartment in February. Thinking of getting the public bus, giving it a go while it is just the two of us and no grumpy teenager in tow!
Land at 9.30am and first bus that I can see is 12.36pm, so might have an hour or two hanging about, but can get a beer or two in the airport bar. When I put in the apartment address it comes up with the bus stop Saalbach Tourismusverband and is then an 11 min walk. Sounds ok until you factor in ski bag, suitcases and perhaps snow on the ground, or best to just get a taxi for that last wee bit which I'm guessing is also uphill?
Return bus leaves at 12.30pm (this time it brings up Schattber Xpress bus stop) and arrives at airport at 14.22 flight is at 17.40, which does give 3.5 hours, but are they reliable timewise? Also do the bus stops in Saalbach sound correct?
Also are you best buying tickets online in advance or ok just to turn up at the bus and pay?
60 euro return for 2 people as opposed to 240 euro return for the transfer.

@Gilly28, I'm assuming for my answer you mean the bus to Zell am See from the airport.
I'm travelling to Lofer later this month for a few days before coming to Saalbach in March and I l'm pretty sure there's a bus around 10 45 from the airport (or there is at least on the day I'm travelling).
I've been asking questions about my Lofer trip (as also getting the bus) and some of the answers might help. I've been told there's an app where you can buy tickets (which I've downloaded but not bought the tickets yet).

Hooe this, sort of, helps.

@TomBH, It's the 260 and we change at Maishofen for the 680 to Saalbach. There is an earlier one but it involves the train and seems to be the same two buses but a train in between and takes a bit longer in total. So thinking just wait for the later bus? Train might be more comfier for some of the journey I guess?

@Gilly28, I think I see the reason now. If you are travelling on a Saturday there isn't a 260 bus until gone Midday but on a weekday there is.
*I compared 3 and 4 Feb.
Sorry I can't help more other than I've read about plenty of people getting to Zell on the train from Salzburg so might be an option for you.

@Gilly28, the first 260 bus from the airport is actually at 12.49. You’re lucky because there are only two on a Saturday, and some people arrive too late. And, as you say, it’s very cheap compared with the alternatives.
I haven’t used the buses myself, as I always seem to be driving these days. But a friend arrived on the 260 bus just before Christmas and it was only one minute late arriving at Maishofen. I get the impression that the public transport is reliable.
The stop you need at Maishofen is “Maishofen Abzw. Glemmtal”.
The explanation for the earlier alternatives is that they’re giving you a route that entails getting a shuttle bus from the airport to Salzburg Railway Station, then a train to Zell am See, then either the 260 bus back to Maishofen, or the 680 bus to Saalbach (depending on whether you insert Maishofen or Saalbach as your destination). Obviously, if you did it that way (took the train to Zell), you’d be best to either catch the 680 bus (from outside Zell Station) to Saalbach, or get a taxi.
I remember once arriving on the train from Munich and coming out of Zell Station to see the 680 bus just pulling away. I wondered if the driver was in cahoots with local taxi drivers!
I would be more than willing to help, by giving you a lift from Maishofen or the Schattberg Xpress (which incidentally is the stop you want on arriving in Saalbach), but I would have to be as sure as I could be that I wasn’t at risk of losing my parking space outside our building. Parking is a real problem in Saalbach, so, if you lose your space, you can end up having to park at the Schönleitenbahn a couple of miles down the road. At the moment I’m not using/moving my car for that reason. I don’t know what the parking situation will be on the day you arrive.

@Gilly28,
Worth remembering you can't check-in until check-in time.
So, while you could get a bus to the train station & a train to Zell, followed by a bus to Saalbach, (and it is only 1 hour quicker!) arriving in resort early may see you sitting around with your luggage (unless you can store it).
Basically you are going to have a wait somewhere. Either in resort or in the airport - so it your preference. At least you know you do not have to rush around in the airport or worry about a small delay.
My scenario - I land an hour before the last bus!
I plan on taking the same bus time as you for the return journey & arrives at the airport at 14.35 for a flight is 16.20.
I am relying on that German efficiency

@Gilly28, @Gored, I use public transport all the time for getting to Hinterglemm from the airport and travelling around in Austria. You need to download the Ößß app. Using this you can find the best route/times to fit your flights. You can use the app to buy your ticket. It also shows you all the route and stops.
I find that public transport is very reliable in Austria. For example at the change over point in Maishofen the driver will make sure you know where the stop is and if one of the buses is running late the other will wait!
Once you have used public transport you will question why you ever used resort transfers in the past.

Good point. That particular accommodation provided is notoriously inflexible, if you can ever get hold of them.......
In a more serious note, most Austrian places will store your luggage is you ask them.

@Yorksboy,
Working out the times is not the problem. Its the unplanned events!
Every option has an obstacle - like 5mins to get to a train that is 2mins walk form the bus station. So quite a tight schedule.
Might just opt for the bus & hope I can still get through security, bag drop, etc. in under 90mins.

We are coming out on Saturday to stay at the Bauer hotel (often stay at AlpinResort which I thorougly recommend). It looks as though, as usual, they have managed the snow as well as they can in the circumstances. We love Saalbach and are looking forward to the Hinterhag and maybe DJ Otzi at the Goat Stall on Wednesday.
With regard to travel from Salsburg Airport, how about contacting the travel companies such as Crystal and Inghams who may have room on one of their transfers? Saturdays only though. Just a thought!

@tatmanstours,
Thanks for the offer it is much appreciated, however I am sure we can just catch a taxi from the stop in Saalbach to the apartment if it’s too much hassle with bags. I think we will stick to the two buses option as the Maishofen bus coordinates with the 260 bus driver arriving.
Thanks for clarification on the times, mines included the walk from airport and a slightly diff bus stop by the looks of it, but we would ask someone at airport to point us in right direction.

@Eddy, We have booked a transfer only with Crystal before, last year they weren’t doing this. We dis ask when we arrived but there either wasn't space or they still weren’t taking transfer only (can’t recall what they said at airport. We also asked Inghams and they did have space and would allow us but we would have had to wait a few hours so the difference booking an alternative transfer service was worth it to get going.
We have still to call Crystal direct just to check if they are doing them or not but I think not.

@Gilly28, and @Gored, just a further thought about this time of arrival and check-in point. Saalbach allows you to use your lift pass from 3.00pm on the day before your pass becomes valid - a nice little bonus, which has often been greatly appreciated by those who arrive in the early afternoon on Saturday and are able to get themselves organised for 3.00pm. It typically allows for an hour or so of skiing time, followed by a leisurely descent of the Kohlmais mountain, calling at such hostelries as the Bergeralm, the Maisalm and the Hinterhag Alm on the way down. People often feel that they’ve got their holiday off to a bang, and, if they tarry long enough in the Hinterhag, that it’s almost equivalent to an extra day.
Of course it helps if you have a nice, friendly, flexible accommodation provider, who is happy to give you access early, or at least to allow you to get changed and leave your bags.

@kb36, almost certainly, even with the poor few weeks after a reasonable start to the season. The forecast shows 15cm in the next week, and it doesn't take much to make a huge difference to how it looks and more importantly how people feel about it.
Prediction - Saalbach will have more than 1m of snow depth on the mountain and more than 50cm in the valley at some point this season, and the season will end as planned on 10th April, despite there being enough snow to continue.

@kb36, yes, but it adds to the general doom and gloom and then people cancel, and those like Mr T with skin in the game lose out financially. I'm there in 8 days - and I have no concerns over whether I'll be able to ski. How much is open and in good condition remains to be seen, but its a holiday and one I intend to enjoy no matter what conditions await me. I've done my share of skiing down a 3ft white ribbon in a sea of mud, and this year so far is nowhere near that level.
