@Scarlet,
From Friday, supermarkets, grocery stores, bank branches and post offices will again have to wear mouth-nose protection. According to Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, these are the locations where members of high-risk groups must go every day, and these need to be protected. Secondly, the expansion of the obligation to wear a mask should also raise risk awareness among the population.

Thanks. That at least explains their logic. I should be fine in the hire shop at the weekend then.

However, I think this is wishful thinking!

@Scarlet, This is my view, the shop will probably ask you to wear one, in Saalbach the tourist office mentioned that you have to wear one in the gondolas.
Previous requirement, Since July, the catering staff have been allowed to work "without" again. Masks have always been mandatory in public transport, pharmacies and medical practices. At the ÖBB, where the mask requirement has been checked since Monday, a dozen mask sinners have been fined so far.

Gondolas are classed as public transport afaik, so that is universal. The shop will expect me to wear one if that is the law, and I shall comply. If it is not the law, then based on past experience, it is unlikely they will bother. As I need to fit a full-face helmet, a face mask is impractical.

Looks like some new regulations for entry to Austria from 'high-risk' countries, including the UK, are about to be announced.
Translated from ORF...
In future, entry into Austria from coronavirus risk areas should no longer be possible without a PCR test. A 14-day home quarantine after entry is also mandatory, even if the test is negative. The Ministry of Health announced this today on request after the federal government announced such tightening yesterday as of Friday.
"In the future, it will no longer be possible to use the 14-day home quarantine instead of a PCR test for entries from countries with entry restrictions," said the ministry. Austrian citizens and persons with a habitual residence in Austria can, however, "in justified exceptional cases carry out the test within 48 hours at their own expense in Austria". All others must submit a test at the border that is no older than 72 hours.
Even with a negative PCR test, however, the following applies: All travelers from high-risk areas must compete in a 14-day home quarantine. A "free" from the quarantine - that is, an early "release" from the quarantine through a negative PCR test - will only be possible for "key personnel" in the future. Their definition is still being finalized, it was said today at the APA request from the Ministry of Health. The upcoming regulation should also list the risk areas for which the tightening applies and will be published at the latest tomorrow, the ministry said.
It also seems likely that Spain and Poland are going to be added to the 'high-risk' category.

Just had a look at the latest stats, UK prevalence and new cases per day per capita are well below that of Austria.
Edit, maybe they will announce tomorrow that we are a "safe" country.

Unfortunately the rise in cases in Austria is related to incoming tourists in almost all circumstances, so the government has decided to tighten up on mask regulations and tourism from high-risk regions.

This will come into force tomorrow? Just had our 4 x Covid tests today at great expense (£596) and arrive by car in Austria on Sunday - 72 hours could stuff us up as was previously 4 days

Just re-read again as will the need to quarantine for 14 days stuff us up.
Scientific idiocy I have to say - a "low" risk German with no negative test is far more likely to be actually positive than somebody from "high" risk Britain (which actually is not dissimilar in risk to Germany) with a negative test result.
British ambassador to Austria seems to have no idea about this - https://twitter.com/LeighTurnerFCO/status/1285605960346669056

Did the ORF specifically say that UK was a country to which "tightening applies" - there are countries starting to see a bit of an upsurge but don't think UK is in that category. How many cases imported from UK this summer - none I suspect

Well obviously but given prevalence in Germany and UK a person from UK with a negative test will be a lower risk than a visitor from Germany with no test - so how many cases imported from Germany then? UK is not the Balkans.

@GranthamPaul, there are more likely to be countries added to the high-risk list than any removed. Spain in particular is a concern right now. The Balkan states are already on the high-risk list. The UK has always been on it since the restrictions began.

@GranthamPaul, the British Embassy will only know of any change, when the Austrian Ministry of Home Affairs makes an announcement, which they haven’t done yet, I’m monitoring their website, plus two Austrian newspapers as well as The Local (English language newspaper)

Are they never forewarned of changes affecting UK nationals? I realise they can't pre-empt the Austrian government though. Either way, I'm guessing they will have read the same papers that everybody on here has seen directly/indirectly and I ask myself why put the text in brackets at all? At the very least it implies to me that they are not expecting a change
Anyway I will cling to my hope that 2000+ Euros will not have been spent just to stay at home until that hope has gone

...and I will be very bitter if I can't. I paid for my tests and had them undertaken at a time/date to comply with the rules that existed at the time for anybody wanting to arrive from the UK on 26 July. At the very least those who tested before the announcement to arrive after the announcement should be exempt. In other words fairness demands that any new rules for UK (Sweden etc) shouldn't come into play until 3 or 4 days after announcement

We've now made other plans, first time we've not been to Austria in summer hiking and mountainbiking for many years. Disappointed but it'll still be there next year, and it'll have to wait. My view is let Austria sort its own internal CV19 issues without outside people coming in, they clearly want to be left to sort out the pandemic without people trampling around and raising the risk, however small that may be, we respect that....they did a great job going into lockdown, communication was iffy but that's fine in retrospect, at least they were decisive, unlike the UK, and Austria imv should now be left to manage their own summer and autumn time, getting ready for winter, their important season when we hope to be back, albeit it'll be different for sure.
I'm happy with our decision, it's clear that the Austrian people (based on comments i've seen on social media, and also mentioned on here) don't want UK visitors, even with a negative test i'd be wary, UK visitors are not welcome right now, a lot of it is around Brexit and BoJo and political perceptions but it's their country and we're happy to back off for now. It's a wealty country and they are looking long term rather than for short term gain like other countries, I respect that.

I'm not sure that makes sense unless you'd be even more wary of the Germans who the Austrians are very happy to be "trampling around and raising the risk".

@GranthamPaul, Hi, it's clear imv that the Austrians would be wary of people from UK, at this time a lot of is about perceptions - I personally don't want to be at say a breakfast buffet at a hotel for example with other people all wary that we'd got the lurgy and were about to infect them, or looking at me wierd every time I stop at the lights in my GB registered car. They already think we're crazy because of Brexit and it's time imo right now to just let the dust settle re CV-19 in Austria and avoid those unneccesary confrontations.
Germans are thought of by the locals I know as very close neighbours, Bavaria/ Tirol for example, people think of themselves as one ime, less so regards Vorarlberg they are seen as Swiss leaning......loads of guys I know in St Anton for example go watch Bayern play at home games regularly, and they use Munich like it's their own rather than Vienna, and support the Oktoberfest like its their event. Similarly Bavarian folks move in and out of Tirol like it's their own playground ime.
I'm in for more than the money you mentioned based on last winter btw, less summer because we didnt over-commit, but we'll be back, we spend a lot of time (and money gulp!) in Arlberg every year, I don't begrudge the locals anything, they do a great job.
