hello fellow SHs! Does anyone know if there is a discount code for Sport2000 in Leogang? Also, does anyone have recommendation for a beginner ski lesson in Leogang for one of our party.
TIA!

We arrive on Saturday - am watching the webcams / forecast closely (not that I can do much...).
Fingers crossed the temps drop and any resort level rain turns back to snow.
First time in Saalbach.
As a family , we are tempted to organise some off piste activities - can anyone advise if the following are worth doing or not?
- A horse drawn sleigh ride (my wife and I had our honeymoon in Salzburg in 2001 and we went on an excursion to do this and want to recreate the magic!)
- Tobogganing down from Spielberghaus
- Curling lesson / session
- Skidoo driving !

I can’t comment on your list, but I’d mention that there’s an ice-hockey game in Zell at 7.30pm on Boxing Day. The Zell Eisbären are at home to Linz. I’ve been to a couple of games and been thoroughly entertained.

I notice that only 80/156 runs are currently open in Saalbach Hinterglemm area. When do they normally open up more of the runs? Is this likely to happen by January or does it depend on the snow conditions?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@skilass, it always depends on the snow conditions - but with 10+cm of snow forecast for this weekend they should be better placed to open up many of the rest. Some of those which have been closed are south facing, and with 9-10 degrees over the last couple of days it is no surprise that they didn't put any effort into getting them ready.
By mid-January, I would expect more than 90% of the runs to be open. By the end of January, more than 95%

Agreed. We really need the Foehn to blow away and some cooler air and precipitation to arrive. Skied there on Tuesday and the snow on most open slopes was very grabby.

@skilass, it will. No need to panic - I've been skiing in several Austrian resorts in the first week of January, and never had a problem.

the ski club 10 day forecast is predicting 150cm in the next 10 days, not sure how reliable the new forecast provider is but even if half of that falls I will be happy

We're happy as we're arriving in Saalbach on Saturday and that's just when the weather turns colder again and with more snow coming next week it sounds great, I just love skiing pistes covered in fresh soft snow.
I've been checking out which lifts and pistes are open on the Saalbach.com website today, 60 out of 70 lifts is a good number especially as it's mostly T-bars that are closed and with 80 pistes open there looks to be more than enough runs to keep us busy for a week as well.
We've been skiing in most other countries but we're first timers to Austria so really looking forward to it, I just hope our aging legs can keep working for the whole week otherwise we'll have to resort to only doing the apres.

@skilass, As quite a few of us have already said, slopes will be great by the time you arrive on the 4th January. I arrive on the 3rd, will give you an update as soon. As I get there
Enjoy Christmas, then it’s ski time!!!

Just for a +ve update - we've been skiing S/H; Leogang; Fieberbrunn; Zell over the past 5 days & the skiing has been fab (apart from a few closed lifts due to wind)
Even with temps of 13deg 2 days ago in Fieberbrunn the snow was good -just soft/granular not slushy
No snow making since Monday but they've been shipping snow in lorries from storage at the ZwolferNord car park to make a base for the Rosswald run to resort

Great skiing yesterday all the way down to Leogang, late lunch at the Chicken Man, no chicken! Piste are in great condition, did 2a and 8 on Wednesday both great, especially 2a which late afternoon was super.

2a good in the afternoon? I thought that was a morning only run. Tatman once described it to me as having to be classified as purple run

If the Spielberghaus is the one I think, the run down from it is a road, that is mostly straight and not that steep. It is quite low in the resort so pretty useless if the weather is warm - you'll be getting off to walk a fair bit; it's Ok-ish if it is cold so it's iced up.

Apart from anything else, just marvel at the S-H lift system. It has to be the best in Europe surely?

Ah, 2B or not 2B? Now it is 2a instead, the quote is lost on most people. It can be good at any time of the day for competent skiers, especially in colder weather. If the temperatures are warm it can get mogulled late in the day, or at least it gets a little soft in places. Much of the run faces west so gets no sun in the morning, some by noon, and lots by the end of the day, so bear that in mind. The last 200 metres can also turn sugary. When I first visited (almost 15 years ago!) my legs were on fire by the time I got to the bottom, but as my skiing improved it became great fun and now I can just about manage to ski it top to bottom without stopping as long as I take it easy on each schuss to recover before the next main pitch.

I did it on Wednesday, at about 3.30pm. I can report that it was possibly in the best condition that I have ever seen it in, and my companion were both very happy, and somewhat relieved. No doubt this was something to do with the change of numbering from 2b to 2a (or maybe it was to do with the time of the season, the weakness of the sun, and the number of people using it.)
The skiing conditions are currently pretty good on piste, despite the comparative lack of natural snow. We have another staying with us - his first visit to Saalbach, and he's very favourably impressed with the skiing area and the bars and restaurants. In the last few days we've "done" Leogang twice, the Zwoelferkogel twice, Schattberg, Hochalm, and lots of skiing on Kohlmais. We were going to do Fieberbrunn today but are feeling somewhat fragile after doing The Crazy deer, the Underbar and Bobby's until late last night.

While you were dining on no chicken, George, we were over the piste at the Alte Schmiede. Sorry we missed you, but I'd forgotten my phone and was incommunicado. Incidentally, the menu at the Alte Schmiede has been greatly improved. I was so impressed with the Alte Schmiede - the menu, the food, the service, the surroundings - that I may in future favour it with my custom, in preference to the Chicken Man.

My brother and I are arriving tomorrow, super excited now! I’m keeping a close eye on the weather; looks like today is the last mild day before snow every day as far as we can see.
Is it worth packing suncream - looks like we’ll be getting plenty of the white stuff but not much sun?
We’ve got beginner lessons booked for Sunday - he’s a first timer and I’m a lower intermediate who needs a good refresher - any suggestions as to which pistes would be good to start on once our lessons are done?

@Londonlass, I very much doubt that you will need sun cream. Even in sunny weather the sun has no strength in December. As you say, the forecast is for snowy weather.
Apart from the Turmwiese nursery slopes, the easiest piste for you to practise on is the top section of 146. You take the Bernkogelbahn gondola to the mid-point on the Bernkogel mountain, then the Bernkogel 6er chair lift to the top. From there both the upper section of 146 and also 147 are very gentle.
Piste 152 from the mid-station of the Kohlmaisbahn is also easy. Also piste 4 on Schattberg.

Last day in Ischgl today and the weather has turned rather wintery overnight and it is dumping with snow after a rather warm week with the foehn wind. Will be coming to Fieberbrunn next though on 11th Jan so I should imagine it is snowing there too.

It’s been snowing down to village level so far today - rain at first, then turned to snow as the temperature dropped a degree. Looking out of the window I can see new snow on the trees just above village level. (Thought some of you might need cheering up
