LWD Tirol
"Over the last 24 hours along the Main Zillertal Ridge and in the East Tirolean Tauern there was 30-40 cm of snowfall, locally more. Along the Main Ötztal and Stubai Ridge as far as the Brenner, as well as in central East Tirol, there was 15-25 cm; in the remaining regions, 10-15 cm. The snowfall, whose starting altitude dropped incrementally to below 2000m, was accompanied by strong to storm-strength westerly winds which have brought about freshly formed snowdrift accumulations. Both fresh and older drifted masses now blanket an unfavourably structured old snow cover above approximately 2200m: interspersed between hardened crusts which are deeply embedded inside it are loose and faceted snow crystals. The proneness to this snowpack triggering is high. In these weakened intermediate layers avalanches can fracture easily.
Alpine Weather Forecast (ZAMG-Weather Service Innsbruck)
Weather: A low is responsible for current weather conditions in Tirol, bringing moist and cool showery air on the back of robust westerly winds. Mountain weather today: on the northern flank of the Alps, limited visibility due to cloud and fog, particularly in the Lechtal Alps and the mountain ranges of Tirol’s uplands, where persistent snowfall is anticipated. Elsewhere there will be extended dry spells. The best conditions for winter sports are to be found on the southern flank of the Alps, away from the Main Ridge, where it will remain dry all day long, with only scattered clouds. Temperature at 2000m, -5 degrees; at 3000m, -13 degrees. Westerly winds will be stormy at high altitude, sometimes reaching the valley floors. In exposed terrain on the northern rim of the Alps, heavy hurricane-like gusts are possible."

@extremerob, the Local is laughed at here in Germany and Austria. It is barely even worthy of the name of (online) newspaper. I go into to it for my TEFL C2 level students to demonstrate the poor standard of English, let alone reporting it repeatedly publishes. They trawl through the internet for anything and everything that is sensational and vaguely associated with the area which they cover. Sadly they have absorbed several worthier newspapers reporting on German, French, Swedish, etc news in English for those who are too lazy to learn the language of the land they have chosen to live in. You just have to read the comments to see the kind of people they aim at!

@nozawaonsen, any thoughts on the eastern alps? Talk of rain from the 19th / 20th? Although I would be skeptical, I mean it is rather cold... Thanks, cheers

Sounds like the Guardian, or Daily Mail for that matter.

Looks like my mates (and anyone else) coming out next week are going to hit the jackpot. Best week since April 2015 straight ahead.
Noticed YR.NO has now got heavy snow at 1200m for Wed 20th, followed by a sunny bluebird 4+ thursday. I know it's all fantasy, but it's only a matter of when. The heaviest downpours will surely be in the pub.

@frankEvb, stay in the trees - how are the black Pistes 13 & 14 skiing? My favourites but 14 was so icy at new year I nearly killed myself 2/3 times on the way down!

Kind of, is more of a chapel really it's the Sisi kapelle tried to put link to fair weather picture below... I have always hoped to get married there but as neither Austrian or Catholic I cant. 😐. Is one of the reasons I love Zell so much it's just so beautiful and full of gorgeous quirks like this! <DOCTYPE>

Snow on the rooftops in Lech, west Austria, steadily getting deeper:

@Whitegold, from my experience, and speaking to locals it doesn't normally freeze until early - mid February. After all it is only at 750m and requires a good few days of very low temps all day and night.

AthersT -- It used to freeze regularly from Jan to Mar. But now it is mostly only frozen in Feb, and, even then, it is only skateable every other year.

@AthersT, Ah unfortunately I'm viewing it all from my sofa as I don't get out there till 23rd... *big sigh, grits teeth and comences dancing* (which is tricky while typing [in ski boots] on your sofa! - please don't knock it - it's working isn't it!)
Trass try to kill you? I don't believe it

@Whitegold, well maybe at the end of this period of very cold weather there will be some ice on the lake possibly as soon as the weekend. Daytime temperatures in the village after tomorrow are expected to be below zero for possibly up to a week or more - night time temps down to -10c or lower.

Heavy snow for most of the day so far at Les Arcs. Was this in the forecast? I thought there was going to be a bit of a lull, before more snow tomorrow?

@mbeaney, Ha - I fear the trasslauf would finnish me off! I am nowhere near fit, brave or crazy enough for that! I'm far more of a booze-cruiser I'm afraid! But good to watch for sure. And yes back to the weather... Not so good for ducks!

Is there such a thing as the best source of weather info for the Southern French Alps - specifically Serre-Chevalier?

@enda1, Hello what Weathercam said 👆 and though I know not a jot about where to look for Serre-Chevalier, have always found PlanetSki and Fraser Wilkin at weathertoski.co.uk will always answer a direct question re a specific resort if you ask them on Twitter. Have been mostly accurate this year - all things considered
