Thanks for all the feedback on hair dryers at the Karawanserai!!! Ousekjarr very funny indeed...had to go for a decent hotel as GF first time on skis so had to impress on this holiday, with nearby nursery slopes and great Apres...Goasstahl was highly recommended

Snowed a bit today. Temperature currently -3.6 in the valley and -9 up top. Not looking forward to this rain but this yo-yo-ing of the feezing level has been a feature of this season, and rain often precedes a dump of snow. The locals seem to think that a bit of rain is good for the snow base, so think positive!

Any update on the stolen skis?

Will be seeing Scouse later in Bobby's. I went to Hagleitners' sports shop today and had the following conversation:
Me: "I would like to buy a good ski lock please".
Assistant: "Oh, you've been to the Hinterhag Alm".
Such a shame.

I suppose it depends on the wording of your insurance policy. I noticed that Hagleitners' were selling insurance cover - different premiums for different levels of cover, depending on the value of the equipment. A 15 euro premium should suffice. I don't know if other outlets do the same. The retractable cable lock I bought from Hagleitners' (a 'Safeman') cost me 17.99 euros. I considered buying a padlock and length of chain from the Lagerhaus (mid-way between Saalbach and Hinterglemm) for about 7 or 8 euros.

P.S. I expect that this is only of concern if you have a newish pair of expensive skis that might appeal to the lowlife who go in for this kind of pilfering. They actually left my Volkl Tigersharks that were paired with Scouse's (haven't asked him what his were). Admittedly they're a few years old but are very good skis.

will shoot down lagerhaus tomorrow morning then, rather spend tenner then hassle with insurers , but anyway loving saalbach, ok , pistes are a bit different them what i am used to , most of blues over here would be a definite reds in other places, but anyway, i bought new ski boots short before trip so didnt had a chance to try them out, i realised today that they are too narrow and cause a hell of pain , so went to ski rental, asked there if i can try some wider boots, bloke working there gave me boots with terms - > try them, if u like them u can buy them, if u dont bring them back . never asked me for my name or money ! thats what i call service

I opted to spend an extra 10 euros on the safeman lock from Hagleitners', because it's designed specifically for the purpose and is compact to carry about. However I don't see why a padlock and chain shouldn't do the job adequately.
The guy in the shop showed admirable trust - sort of compensates for the bad taste in the mouth left by said lowlife. Was it perchance Hansi's?

nope , it was different place, but yeh, i cant say anything bad about Austria whatsoever , last year when I rented my kit it was exactly the same, they asked me my first name and email address and that was it , fortunately Austria is not yet spoiled with ''lowlife'' as much as most europe.

YES!!!! Cuckoo (who are brilliant) are playing live in Bobby's Pub, starting about now! Don't miss them - if you do, they will be in the Underbar on Wednesday evening.
Later, Mangos is good - chilled, good music.

SCOUSE, Thats the spirit mate. Surprised no one has commented on the irony of a scouser having something robbed. sorry couldnt resist.
Sounds like a professional job then as those places are easily reached in a van. Hope your mojo is back tomorrow.
Did you have a shot at Hansi's? Think he uses it to strip the old wax off the bases.

...in the words of my beloved Christine, "I feel sorry for anyone who has missed Cuckoo in Bobby's tonight - they were so so good!"
However, all is not lost - they are playing the Underbar on Wednesday (which just happens to be spare ribs night in Bobby's).
By the way, the new bar, "Mango" is well worth a late night drink! (Hic!)

Safe to say i won't be doing any back flips...prob be in traction if I tried anything like that. Thanks for the updates on the weather...just out of info, we will be arriving on Saturday in Hinterglemm, any good recommendation for a spot of lunch (will leave the skiing for Sunday as GF will be in ski school). We are with Neilsons so reckon we will be getting kitted out etc but fancy a nice lunch for our first day in resort...walk up to the Goasstahl?

Howdy All
Going to Saalbach this Saturday with two friends. Know the area well as I've skied there 4 or 5 times already, but previously went with Mrs Mauddib and mini Mauddib, so we always stayed in Hinterglemm.
As it's boys only this time we're staying in Saalbach (can't think why ) and I was wondering has anyone got any recommendations for decent ski hire near to Bernkogel and Kohlmais?
I'll be taking my own, so we'll need to hire theirs from somewhere that will allow me to use their ski garage too as I don't fancy walking up to the lifts in the morning in boots with skis.
Thanks All

You could do a lot worse. However, the Grabenhuette (which is marked on the piste map) is accessible on foot from the village and is famed for the quality of its excellent home cooking, being slightly off the beaten track and owing its success to its reputation amongst the 'cognoscenti'. Their speciality - Schweinshaxe (Pork hock) (min 2 people) costs 11 euros and has to be pre-ordered. If you google the name, you'll find all you need to know - they even have a Facebook page.
If you're not bothered about the speciality and are happy just to turn up and order off the menu, they do an excellent Tirolergroestl with salad for 8.5 euros, and a selection of omelettes for around 7 euros.

Sounds like there's a bit of an issue in Saalbach at the moment? Unless one or two thefts are triggering a tit-for-tat response.
I guess, if there is a coordinated/organised crime spree, then ski-locks may also be ineffective - the cables aren't exactly that thick.
Also surprised those Tigersharks weren't lifted Tatmans Tours - they're good skis and pricey - about £800+ new IIRC.

mauddib,
We always use and recommend Hansi's Best-Price (20% discount for anyone we direct to him), but Hansi's shop is at the bottom of Dorfstrasse nearer the Schattberg lift, and he doesn't have the space to allow people to leave their equipment overnight, so not what you appear to be looking for. There is however a Sport 2000 outlet just down the street (Schiliftstrasse) from us, opposite Bauer's Schi-Alm and virtually opposite the Kohlmais Lift Station, and we've found them helpful in the past. It's also a big shop so may have the space to allow you to park your stuff overnight.

Chasseur, I don't think it's an issue only for Saalbach; I've heard about this problem in other resorts - teams of thieves raiding the slope-side apres-ski bars (not the ones higher up) with vans. Having said that I was chatting to SCOUSE, outside the Bergeralm (which is up the mountain) a couple of days ago and watched a woman casually detach one of my carbon fibre poles from one of my skis and start apparently hunting around for the other one, which I'd put with my other ski some distance away. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't watch her for a bit longer to see what she did, but I marched up to her, pulled the pole out of her hand, said 'Thank you' in my best attempt at a terse tone of voice, and made a show of replacing the strap over my ski. She didn't respond, except for a bit of muttering under her breath. Having regard to what happened to SCOUSE, a couple of hours later, I now wish that I'd watched her more carefully.

Thanks TT for the lunch recommendation. Have spotted the place on the piste map and its in my ski notes to vist (11a). Happy to buy off menu but the Schweinshaxe sounds excellent. Bit worried to hear about these ski thefts, always assumed it was one of those unwritten rules about not worrying about your kit when having lunch. Will only have rental gear but still a real shame this is happening...like to think the Austrian police will have a zero tolerance to this!

^ yep, it's still a problem at the KK in St Anton.
It was very bad at the Folie Douce in Val (people coming up on the gondola, helping themselves to skis and going back down) but they now have a dedicated security guy to keep an eye on them.
Anyway, had a visit to the fracture clinic today, and good news on the shoulder. Specialist said I'm OK to ski, but to make sure I don't fall on it! He also said I probably won't be able to use poles. But anyway, that's positive news. No sling needed, no special painkillers, and it'll take 6 weeks to fully heal.
Can't wait to get there, especially with this forecast

Karaoke at Bobby's if that's your bag. Good music and chilled atmosphere at Mango. Usual Austro-German schlager music and (Ger)manic dancing at Kuhstall (friendly bar staff - Anita and Bernhard). I've heard that there's a good Swedish band performing at Castellos (although it was my son who told me this, and his taste might not be yours), Taverne is likely to be lively. Then there's Underbar, Oetzi Bar, Alibi, Zum Turm = much of a muchness probably.
Underbar is the place to be tomorrow evening - Cuckoo will be playing and they always whip up a great atmosphere (as they did last night in Bobby's)

It looks like I'm going to book a nice long weekend break to saalbach staying in a small piste side apartment at the bottom of piste 61 red, just above the schonleitenbhan gondola. I'm going with my usual ski partner, my wife, who unfortunately won't be skiing as she's 4 months pregnant. She's happy to chill in the apartment, meet me for lunch and accompany me to some après ski! We are going for 4 days from 2 march.
What I'd like to know is of any decent huts we could have lunch at that she could either walk to or catch a lift to as a pedestrian. I know area reasonably well but obviously not as a pedestrian as have been 3-4 times before. We can't wait, but any nice hut recommendations appreciated. We particulary like thurneralm by the fire with the ribs a nice favourite of mine, but I don't think she could get there on foot.

pjd, Restaurants accessible by pedestrians (non-skiers can purchase special 'Sun Ticket' lift tickets from the ticket offices - €71 for 7 days - or separate tickets as required):
Saalbach:
Bernkogelbahn has Backstatt Stall at the bottom (in the centre of the village) and the Barnalm at the top of the gondola, (but by far the best food on this run is at the Westernstadl, which is not accessible on foot),
Hinterhagalm is at the top of the Turm chair lift (pedestrians can ride up on the chair lift, but need to walk down) - but however great the apres ski is here, the lunchtime food is no great treat,
From the mid-station of the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn (the 5 red tin cans) its a short walk to the Asteralm or Ederalm - these can also be reached from the top of the 3-man Kohlmais chair lift, which allows pedestrians to ride up and down,
Sky Rest at the top of the Schattberg gondola has stunning views and good food,
Wildenkarhutte is at the top of the Schonleiten gondola and the Rachkuchel and Hochwartalm are at the Schonleiten midstation - Wildenkarhutte wins my vote, for the views over to Zell am See and beyond. Take the free Jausern ski bus to the gondola station.
If eating at the bottom of the pistes, Kohlmais Stub'n on 51 has excellent food; accessible on foot by walking up the street past the Kohlmais lifts
Hinterglemm:
Sportalm and Wieseralm are at the top of the Reiterkogelbahn gondola, Goasstall at the bottom.
There is a nice walk up from opposite the Eishalle up to the Rosswaldhutte (on Piste 27/2. The Currywurst is highly recommended.
Take the bus to the Hochalmbahn for access to the Hochalmhutte and Sonnhof.
The Winklerhof is at the mid-station of the Zvolferkogelbahn, with the 12'er Treff at the top.
Finally. the Westgipfelhutte is at the top of the Westgipfelbahn.
There are a few more, but this should be enough to be getting on with |
