No updates from Mrs DJL today but it looks a cracking day on the webcams. Hope the rain won't wash too much away before we arrive on Saturday!

We have just got back from an all too brief blat around Linderettes, Linga, Avoriaz, Prodains and Fournet. Perfect conditions and nobody around. Making the most of it before the rain comes.

Lovely sunny day up in Avoriaz today - chair open on the wall so we were able to go over to Switzerland, all the pistes in great nick.
Bit disturbing to be going up the Lindarets Express, hearing a crack to our left and seeing first one tree and then another come down soooo close to a chair going up the Prolays lift.

Ricklovesthepowder, weight of the snow I would imagine - we saw one that had come down the other day on the Combe de Foret run, two thirds of the way across the piste and friends we had lunch with today said they had seen one right across a piste, leaving only a very small gap to get past, somewhere on the Morzine side, but stupidly - and it was a long lunch - I can't remember exactly where.

We were skiing down that little bit above the bottom of the Prolays chair on Monday and Tuesday with geetee jr and noticed at the end of yesterday that there were trees down. It must have been quite scary to be on that chair when they fell!
Not the most pleasant of days on the mountain today after such an amazing day yesterday - my gloves and salopettes were quite damp by the afternoon but the Arc'teryx jacket did its job so my top half was nice and dry.

A lot of trees fell here last December when so much snow fell very suddenly. They were going up our chairlift, which goes through a lot of trees, with a chainsaw on a long stick, lopping off branches which were threatening the chair. My friend got stuck behind the chainsaw gang, who kept stopping the lift, and was very late meeting his wife for lunch. Walking in summer and autumn it was noteworthy how many trees were down - a lot more than usual. I suppose when it falls more gradually the trees have time to get used to it.

Arrived in Chatel around 16.00. Rain staryted in Monthey and turned to snow before Morgins.
-1C on the Pas de Morgins and 0C in Chatel. Turned to rain abot 18.00 and now coming down steadily.
Hope it doesn't last too long or go too high but it seems the forecast was right.
Fingers crossed for a colder snap. There is still loads of snow though.

Went out today and it is definitely noticable that we are now in the Christmas week; many more people on the slopes and many not really in control.
We started off at the Ardent and made our way up to the Pointe de Mossette with a view to going for a bit of a blat around Switzerland. Unfortunately the blue path above Les Crosets that ends up at the Gueilly (short) Poma was closed (avalanche risk I guess) and so getting down to Champoussin was a no-no without heading back to Linga and getting the bus. We headed over to the Swiss wall (all the runs in Les Crosets were in good nick but absolutely rock solid this morning) which Mrs H skied and declared it better getting in than normal (no real moguls). Rest of the day spent pottering around Chatel and Linga.
Mind the muppets over Christmas.

Have we entered some sort of space time continuum Rick - I suspect April 1 last year!
Warm in Chatel 3C at 1300m at 17.00 but we're giving it a go tomorrow.
Kitchen more (my view) or less (Mrs DJL) finished so it's on to the skis!

andy from embsay,
Very warm yesterday, but there is plenty of snow. Definitely would not want an extended period of this warm weather, but looks to be cooling again, with snow, on Boxing Day. Pistes very busy as everybody arrives for the festive season and sadly nowhere to escape as off piste is a no no at present. A lot of natural avalanche activity, not seen any huge slides, but plenty to cause concern. People by and large being sensible, however, there are others skiing some pretty stupid lines.
Here's to the return of the cold weather.
Merry Christmas to all.
Bob

Thanks Ardoyne - we're not out in PdS til Feb, but it does look from Nozza's outlook the snow'll be back with a vengeance later in the week. Cham for me with the lads (and lasses) in just over three weeks - let's hope the hors piste has stabilised a bit by then!

32 days tomorrow.
Chatel that is.
Avoriaz is nice too.
Not been to Morzine.
Nor Les Gets.
Might get there this year if there is good snow.
Sorry about all this, but I am on an Android tablet and trying to start a new page.

You see, one of the pictures above is so big that it turns the writing tiny.
And I really want to see what is going on in Chatel.
As I will be there in 33 days' time.
Nice snow so far.

What can I say under a new name, my navigation lived up to its usual appalling standards! *
The really important lesson that everyone should take on board is that whereas zzz is a skinning-demon, I'm more skinning-vomit
* "What's up that track?" we wondered. "Hmm, no more track. We'll 'just' cut up that bank with the trees on it...". The bit of the bank that was in the sun had rubbish, soft snow. So we took to the trees. And then it really started going wrong. We got to the point were the choices were to cross the stream, or to go up a 30 degree slope with pillows of snow in poor condition. The issue with the stream wasn't so much the water, which was safely under the snow, but more that it was "quite steep sided" - requiring "non standard" skinning technique to be employed. NotMrsFS had to brush the pine needles off me when we'd finished.

Not a bad way to pass Christmas Day. Presents first then on the slopes around 10.15.
We headed to Avoriaz but just missed the Express Intrets chair which closed for wind around 11.00 so no Coupe du Monde. We headed to the Fornet and as we arrived the Chavanette chair closed so had a couple of runs in the bowl and thought we would head for Mossettes (closed) and we noticed Cubore was not running. This put the wind up us (if you'll excuse the pun) and visions of being trapped in the wrong valley and an expensive taxi ride sent us back over to home ground above Plaiine Dranse.
Had a few runs round Linga and Pre La Joux and home by 16.00 with the rain just starting to spot.
Pisted snow high up is pretty good but low down its just a bit too warm and that with an artificial base isn't so good. Didn't go on any off piste but slides were in evidence all over the show and there seemed to be a mixture of deep soft snow and icy crust just off the sides.
Hope the forecast snow arrives.
Merry Christmas to all PDS snowheads (whether here or watching from at home).

Due to arrive in Montriond weekend of 5/6 January 2013 for 5 weeks. Trying hard (and failing) to contain my growing excitement. Will have family and friends out for first 3 weeks and then on my own for last 2 weeks. If anyone is in resort on their own and looking for someone to ski with please let me know.

Arriving Morzine tomorrow night, first day of skiing on the 27th. snow-forecast is currently saying heavy rain and a bit of wind that day... guessing the best option will be to head to Avoriaz and try to stay above 1600m (ie so it's snow not rain), but any suggestions on runs for an early intermediate? Only been to Morzine once before and we only skied Morzine/Les Gets.

Rain last night in Chatel starting towards midnight and stopping (or turning to snow - can't tell the difference from noise on the roof) in the early hours.
Light covering on the cars this morning at 1300m and snow on the trees about 200m higher.
Just had a light snow flurry but also the odd blue patch.
Off to investigate.

Page 9 is going to be such a nice page. Can't wait.
Looks from the webcams as if there was a decent amount of snow at the top of the new Rochassons lift.
Might not be that new actually.
Not been to Chatel since 2011.
So it might have been new last year.
Still comparatively new then.
New to me, in any case.
Are we there yet?

FlyingStantoni,
Santa brought me some near touring skis this year, so very keen to try them out upon my return on the 29th. Will you and Mrs FS be around for a while?
ps, I've been known to be lost too.

Oh dear god. If they're soooper doooper light ones then I'm knackered!
Going home on 6th, but we have have kids visiting with non-skiing parents, so we're doing the ski school run (and associated afternoon skiing) next week. So, unless you want to bust my back bottom skinning up Pleney then probably best left until the next time we're out (18-20 Jan). We may have even practised a bit more by then

It's been a particularly foul morning in Chatel so we decided on a day off and over to Lausanne for a few errands.
Rain all the way there and back. No snow on the trees I can see above the apartment (up to 1600m) and above that it's into the cloud.
I'm sure there will be some fresh snow higher up but you would get pretty wet getting to it.
