Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Plane for me - Luton is only 45 mins away and there is such a good choice of early out and late back to maximise ski weekends

Hi guys,

Just wondering when they begin snow making in resort? I'm guessing it's very weather dependant, but does anyone know to what degree, does i need to be constant negative temps?

nollafb, Weather and cost dependant. Snow cannons in Tignes have been run already (see Tignes val claret webcam). The weather forecast (if you can believe it) suggests consistently cooler temps arriving over the next week, so i'd expect them the cannon to be running soon but I'd also hope that 'real' snow would be arriving!
Looking back a the historic web cam pics there is usually a reasonable piste covering by now and you can usually see the cannons running during the day but at the moment it's looking rather bare. Damn ingenious these Frenchies, taking the snow in during the day! wink Only 17 days till we arrive in Tignes, bring it on!

A fantastic day on the slopes. Blue sky and no winds. Sure, would prefer a lot of new snow but I'm not fussy. I made it back in one piece....just a few bruises.
Rorie took me for a great lesson. I would recommend him to all who are looking for lessons. No attitude, patient and extremely helpful.

Update from tignes - AlanB1976, Annamillennium, and I having a great time at the Melezes with all the really friendly staff and other guests. Snow up on the glacier is excellent in the main part, double m is 'closed' but skiable down to resort but not much fun - very icy for the bottom section. weather has been excellent without a cloud in the sky.

3 hours of work for me tomorrow and then straight to Gatwick for my flight out there, looks like a fair bit of sun for my few days and low winds, would love powder but can't complain aslong as the winds stay low and the glaciers open

Well..... this work thing sucks. I wish I was back in Tignes. But I suppose that is like any holiday.

Just some notes as a follow up (from my puny bit of experience). It was a great weekend. Weather was perfect, everyone was friendly and the beers were cold. reded78 and Annamillennium were good company, as were the staff and the many other guests. A group from Kent actually took me off-piste on the day I was skiing. Granted, it wasn't too bad and the rocks were few, but for someone who has only had about 2 days of experience, a real eye opener. Absolutely loved it. Snow was at least soft when I fell NehNeh. The weekend before, the glacier was closed, so we have to be glad that we got up at all. The snow seemed a lot better on the Thu/Fri than later on the weekend. There were the occasional icy patches on the runs down between the funicular and the top due to the lack of fresh snow. The run down to the bottom was very tricky for a beginner like me with the bottom of the run almost entirely icy. I was told that it improved on Sunday. I chose to not hit the slopes on the Sunday due to a nasty tumble on the Saturday resulting in badly bruised rib with me squeeling like a little girl on most movements. Note to self, don't keep my pointy cornered camera in the jacket pocket so I don't slam on to it when catching a toe edge. Temperatures were actually quite high during the day. I even had to open my jacket many times to cool down. Winds started to pick up on the Sat night but don't know how they were on the slopes on Sun morning.

Now to look forward to the January trip....... so far away.

Thanks to all for all the advise and friendly banter

wink

Hey there my fellow snow heads! I have a 10 day trip to espace killy region and I'm looking at the webcams on both val and tignes websites but I am quite worried about the snow due to the whole global warming apocalypse! Anyway, I am getting to the resort on the 10th of december....should I expect poor conditions or will they pick up

Cheers!!

p.s. I wouldn't trust the media at all. According to the BBC weather reports, it was supposed to be "bitterly cold" now and then they turn around and say "highest temperatures recorded at this time". There's just no telling. What I can say is that even though there wasn't lots of snow when we were there, there was enough to have serious fun

Hi paul, pleasure to meet with you and the misses over the weekend, hope you had a good night in Geneva and a safe trip back home. We tried to get AlanB1976, back out on the slopes on Sunday but I think the lie in and grand prix were too much for him!

Best of luck with your season in Verbier, will deffo be in touch if I can ever get up to Aviemore / Verbier.

For anyone going out to Tignes or Melezes over the coming weeks hope you all have a great time and best wishes for the snow. I'm back out in the 1st week of April so think there should just about be enough time between now and then for the odd flake or 2.
