Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

altis, cheers. so if I got L1 this year, I have 3 years to get L2, then need to do a refresher every 3 years after that, is that correct?

kitenski, yes you need "contact time" with Basi every 3 years; I'm doing my race coach course (L1) and that counts as a refresher....

kitenski, you need to do another BASI course (of any kind) within 3 years, or do a refreseher. You don't need to pass the course. So if you don't want to do your L2, you could just do a 1 day refresher, or a Snowboard L1 course for example would also count.

Cynic again...

So, if your 'contact' with BASI can be completely irrelevant to your qualification, what's the point?

Other than creating revenue for BASI of course Wink

altis, It's not completely irrelevant. Anything directed at improving ability, knowledge or teaching skills in snowsports would be relevant to an instructor role. You might even say a purely classroom generalist "communication skills" course could count (better keep that quiet or BASI will add it to their modules wink ).

altis, As fatbob, said, any continuing education with BASI is relevant. You could take the opposing view that if you're continuing with other BASI courses you're not made to do an additional referesher course.

I was 36 (and 3/4's Wink )

The guy that taught me was an instructor who specialised in teaching blind skiers.

I knew I had a proprioceptive problem - it was obvious in self testing of various things at uni and also the physios and occupational therapists I shared accom with had commented on it. However we assumed(bad idea I know but..) that I was simply low end normal. After all who would assume I had a major loss? I have a few telltale signs of an issue but it never occurred to anyone to look further... also it was years ago and not that well understood I think...

I requested an instructor who could teach well rather than demo well - I knew I was very very very bad at 'copy' and through experience with learning to fence I had discovered that with the right teaching I could learn a movement pattern (with effort... Poor coach spent weeks teaching me how to touch foil tip to wall/person).

The ski school gave me a guy who specialised in teaching blind skiers as blind skiers do not copy. (Our system has disabled skiing integrated with regular ski school so instructors are usually double qualified).

That instructor taught me maybe 3-4 lessons and then insisted I be assessed as he swore black and blue I had a brain injury. He had also worked with brain injury patients and I had movement patterns just like a group of his students.

Long and short - the doctor went Shocked when he started testing me - he specialised in testing proprioception for the navy and thought he had seen a fair spectrum of different results.

After that instructor fell out with ski school the following season I had a PSIA 2 for 2 years - not good. She was limited by her own poor understanding of skiing- so although she worked hard to adjust to my disability she lacked a good enough grounding to really do the job. (I did eventually surpass her so... part of the problem being she thinks she has a better understanding than she really does)

My next instructor was a race coach, ex-racer, disabled instructor(cerebral palsy a specialty IIRC).
I then had a collection of full certs, racers, one ex-moguls competitor for Canada, instructor trainers, examiners... Some of them would brainstorm over beers how to get me to... flex an ankle, move my hips... keep my arms from flailing around like a thunderbird person(oh yes I was that bad)...

The general idea for ski school desk was to try to find me race coach or racers with disabled certs - they had a good technical understanding with the ability to adapt teaching... ditto the trainers and examiners - strong technical understanding made big difference in getting a good result with me.

Part of the issue is that I often need to break movements down into smaller sized chunks. This lets me work out how to make movements or feel feedback to control movements etc. Strong technical understanding lets me avoid poor imitations of a movement that may appear 'close enough' if you just judge by the look rather than ski performance. It also allows a bit more freedom of exploration to find alternative solutions. (eg one guy walked a couple of turns for me pressing on my arm to show me how much pressure he felt on his boot cuff at each point in the turn when he skied it- he had done that first - that helped me work out part of the ankle flexion problem I'd been struggling with... another had me moving clothing to provide sensory feedback to help make a movement... all sorts of weird things that got a part of the problem solved)... Most of those guys were also trained in a couple of systems and had worked in 2-3 different systems... variety works well for problem solving... (Eg the replacement instructor was PSIA trainer, APSI trainer, CSIA top level coach, racer, coach, disabled cert - with experience in many countries. The first instructor had about 20 seasons teaching in 2 countries with 2 countries certs plus disabled cert... plus he had ski bummed about 10years before that hanging out with instructors - so had an interest... and had a small acquired disability himself)

If you ask Easiski she has skied with me, seen me try to hike Shocked and chatted to Fred(he is very into biomechanics) who also skied with me - so she probably has a fairly good idea how I work and could translate into BASI talk...

Hi All. Some weeks ago on this thread I picked up that there had been some confusion regarding pre BASI level1 training at The Snow Centre. We do run a regular Tuesday evening training session to prepare or improve BASI specific skills. You should get this information when you book, but if you don't ask to speak to someone in the snowsports school.

Pete, I booked with my son the first week of April, the letters confirming the course and recommending the Tuesday training sessions arrived today, I've just opened it! For the course on the 18th of this Month. rolling eyes

Ps When I contacted the Snowcentre on two occasions they told me they don't do confirmation letters, just e-mails and they knew nothing about training sessions (they even went and checked with someone in the office on the second occasion). Fortunately bumped into Penny two weeks go who told me different, unfortunately I'm working this Tuesday evening. Sad

I suspect your instructors are losing a bit of business due to poor communication and awareness by the Snowcentre.

ah no - you need to learn from resort snow cams... point camera at the best bit (under a snow gun?).... if conditions get really bad have an 'accident' - camera gets knocked off to view the trees or gardens, or blank screen only because power is knocked out Twisted Evil

Tape a shot of only 2 people skiing - before opening... for illogical reasons best known to men, one should be a female in bikini... Run tape loop any time it looks busy or you think it will be quiet and want to draw a crowd(see bikini bit)... Twisted Evil

I'll send you the consultancy bill Wink

anarchicsaltire I think it depends on how well informed the person on the other end of the phone is. Like you I received a letter of confirmation of my L1 course which preceded your course on the 18 July and included in it was a recommendation to attend a pre-assessment training session to be held every tuesday 7-9pm. And when I phoned up to enquire about the session, the receptionist had no hesitation in advising me about it - she even told me the name of the basi instructor, Penny Chapman. I think it stated that it took up to 11 delegates. I then asked her what if I,m the only name down for it? "No problem," she replied. As long as there is one delegate, the session is on. When I turned up that Tuesday (14 June) there were just four of us. One of them I did the L1 course with the following week.
