Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Roy Hockley, Pamski, properjob, TommyDazzler, Many thanks for the feedback.

Next question: as I'm only skiing two days, I've decided to hire planks in resort as it seems just as cheap & a whole lot less hassle.

I see ski fun shop are part of skimium who do an extra 5% discount for Decathlon card holders on top of their online discount. Any other pointers for good ski hire? (If it makes any difference I'm considering one level down from the top range)

Looking forward to Monday fortnight, keep some good snow for me please wink

Bonne Annee tout le monde!

bookham_mat, I'm in Les Gets - yup more snow needed but really don't worry. Most runs are open and although snow is thin in places, it's fine. There is lots of ice about, and Mont Chery not fantastic if you cherish your bases, particularly on lower part of Chamois. Also have been in St Jean d'Aulps - wouldn't go back until more snow - and Avoriaz/over into Les Crosets and Champery - no problems Madeye-Smiley

Bon ski all Very Happy

Any snowHead s going to be on the Swiss side of PDS next week? I'll be staying in Morgins. There is guiding for 5 days but might be fun too meet some snowHead s for a ski.

Has anyone found any online deals for PDS lift pass? Last time I looked it worked out about £181 with the £/swiss f exchange?

Happy New year and good skiing to all. Very Happy

Happy New Year everyone. Happy Having a great time in Morzine. The weather has been a bit changeable since we got here and it has felt positvely spring like at times but was very cold for the first couple of days. As Lou says, some of the the runs are getting a bit thin in places and quite icy. The back side of Mont Chery seems reasonably OK but the front side is patchy. The best skiing seems to be had first thing in the morning. By lunchtime the queues are building up and the queue for the Chavannes chair the other day was huge. Luckily it moved fairly quickly. It would be nice to get some more snow now.

Fab lunch again today with Lou and her family this time at La Grande Ourse. One of my favourite restaurants here. We went for a little ski afterwards but unfortunately little geetee was involved in a collision with a Frenchman. Very scary moment for me when I turned back to check on her and saw this bloke land on top of her. Luckily she was OK and recovered quickly. Lou was a complete star and I'm so glad she was there to help.

Hi Lou,

So in short, Mont Chery shagged, Les Gets needs more snow because it's generally icy and thin in places. Don't even think about St Jean D'Aulps.

Avoriaz is just about holding up, Les Crosets has never really got going this season and the snow in the Plaine Dranse area is dreadful. (My opinion). It looks like rain from the 5th. The worst start to the season for three (?) years me thinks.

Don't even mention the off piste.

Happy days Toofy Grin

No, just being honest. If you don't mind skiing on boiler plate and you have a set of rock hoppers then it's fine. Meteo chamonix forecasting three days of rain from the fifth, up to 2200m. Still it might soften the pistes up a bit.

youngeratheart it's not perfect by any means with the icy patches more plentiful than usual but lots of pistes that are fine. It's even possible to still ski all the way down to Morzine which is of course very low wink zzz
Over in Avoriaz it was better - particularly on Swiss side (perhaps more likely to use the many more snow cannons I saw?) but there had been more recent snowfall around Les Crosets.

Piste management here good except for Mont Chery which has been neglected big time. There has been plenty of opportunity to turn the few cannons on there as temps are lower again now Confused Chattng to peeps at La Grande Ourse, they feel the same. The snowpark has moved from there over to the other side - maybe this has made them less likely to help, not sure. There is a petition in the village to reinstate it on Mont Chery.

geetee yes we really enjoyed our lunch with you guys and just a shame that littlegeetee had a collision - brave little girl and a fab skier too Very Happy

Not sure we will get to sample the new red eggs, letter posted on 29th said they were hoping to have them running by the end of last week. The area around there is already much improved/opened up.

New Chamossiere Express (very comfortable!) is ok though as it doesn't go up quite to where the old one went, you don't get the view over the other side. Blanchots red was closed yesterday so that means access is via the Choucas which is much busier. The nice man from Thonon who runs the Blanchots is run off his feet.

I would get a pass for Avoriaz and forget about Les Gets and Morzine. This is for a couple of reasons.

1. Currently the skiing in Avoriaz is beautiful while the skiing in Morzine and Les Gets is solid Ice. If/when this changes http://morzineweather.com does a video update so you can see for yourself and make a informed decision on the pass you buy.

2. Your next to the Super Morzine lift. Its a perfect location for skiing Avoriaz.

Hope this helps.

Chattonmill, see my comments re Mont Chery above. We didn't go up today (our last day and usually head there) but suspect from what we could see that it won't have changed much from yesterday. Depends on your group but coming all the way down Chamois is very icy and very patchy Sad
Best snow will probably be on the back, Marmottes & Chevreuil, & Lievre (watch out Lievre isn't closed before you zoom down, it was the other day and I only noticed in the nick of time Toofy Grin )

Low cloud spoilt today somewhat, with very poor visibility for much of the day. Gave up at top of ranfolly and came down the Gentian as couldn't see more than couple of metres at that point Best bit of the day was a quick stop at Lhottys just to let the masses go down and then had the last run down to ourselves before the pisteurs finished up Very Happy

If the weather is good, head up the Chamossiere, Ranfolly. Reds in the bowl were in fairly good nick today. Lots of people on Melezes today but should be quieter this week.

Chattonmill,

Most pistes in Avoriaz in pretty good shape and some excellent snow on Fornet and Combe de Machon if you like steeper unpisted.

Spent all day yesterday in sunshine above the clouds.

15 Eur for an afternoon pass in Bernex to find my skiing legs before a PdS attack tomorrow . Pistes better than expected given the reports re Les Gets. Good snow all the way down to the carpark and the pistes deserted apart for the main run down from Pre Richard due to a regional ski championship. Once above the cloud, nice and warm with excellent views of the PdS over to Mont Blanc

I'd agree that the snow is far from brilliant, but IMHO the rain last Christmas / New Year made that start much worse.

Yes, there's ice, bare patches and surface rocks. But after a week of fairly hard skiing my skis aren't that badly scratched and I don't have any core shots. Having skied in Les Houches and Flaine the conditions there are worse.

I completely agree that the best snow to be found is the consolidated off-piste above around 1700m. Unfortunately for zzz it's skiing like nice grippy piste.

The worst snow is probably the off-piste between 1300m and 1700m where meadow gives way to more rocky terrain and coverage isn't good enough to protect your skis.

Mogul hounds will find plenty to amuse themselves.

The bowl in Les Gets was fine yesterday, although a little bare in places, Chevrelles especially should be avoided. Generally tended towards icy, but some nice patches in places.

Just back from a week in Champoussin/Crosets/PdS

Cold and mostly sunny, snow not overly deep, generally good but several unexplained brown patches (and i mean brown) some of them quite high up. it seems the wind has blown the snow off the more unprotected ridges before it could "stick".

Quite a few runs not pisted and have become impromptu mogul fields, link between Crosets and Champoussin also very poorly pisted, basically rounded a corner to find an unpisted hillside with seven or eight sets of tracks to choose from ...

Had a good day on Thursday across to Les Gets, Ranfolly bowl in mostly good condition, a few icy patches were developing.

No sign of snowfall until yesterday morning, an inch or so for us to drive through on our way to the airport (GVA the usual bunfight but that's another story)

But I also remember the rain last New Year. Let's see if it manifests itself later this week or not.

Oh and to add insult to injury we have had three inches of lovely fluffy snow in Lincolnshire this morning.

Cheers Tim

We're back now too sadly Sad after a great week or so. I don't normally mind ice too much but won't miss the rather large patches Toofy Grin

Boys had had enough of fog on Sunday so OH & I went back out for a couple of hours (ooh the freedom, now that they are old enough to be left for a bit Cool ). Quick "warm up" at Lhottys before a delicious blast back down Chavannes which was by then nearly deserted.

I'm heading out to Les Gets on the 16th Jan. Just noticed all the rain forecast this week, which is rather alarming, should I be worried about lack of snow? Chattonmill, Glad I gave Chatel a miss if that was the case. Interesting day in Thollon for me. Lots of snow in the village but poor snow depths up top. Looks like most snow had been blown off the mountain by the wind. Managed to get above the mist but below the clouds so not to bad a session. Clouds getting darker in the west as the day went on so a change to warm and wet weather in the next few days. Looks like I will be going home early Sad

Tordi, be prepared to get yourself up to Avoriaz. Very early to say, but there looks like some snow after the rain? Ironically the rain might just help reduce some of the sheet ice Toofy Grin If the resort is struggling then they would normally lay on buses to Avoriaz but fingers crossed you won't need to.

OOoooo sheet ice, my nemesis! Shocked I notice the snow forecast after the rain, but I guess things are so changeable in January its probably too early to tell what will happen. Lets hope all this rain just falls as snow, and I roll up to metres of pow! Fingers crossed!!! I guess if there is no snow, the only thing for us to do is to hunker down in the chalet with a crate of beer. Not sooooo bad Very Happy

Tordi, we didn't find any sheet ice today, the odd patch here and there, and some warmth to soften the snow won't go amiss, just hope the freezing level is lower than forecast and sl less rain. And yes its a holiday. Just off to watch Morzine vs Angers in the national ice hockey semi-final. Thats sheet ice, blood and violence.

Chattonmill, Meteo Chamonix is persisting in saying the snow line will be 900m tomorrow am and up to 1600m later, so possible to ski high in the snow tomorrow, but Friday is another day. Ranfolly particularly nice today, with fine views over Mt Blanc. The blue back to Morzine also still in good nick, some of the other return pistes look more dodgy though.
