The weather was today less beautifull then the days before. The sun was several times for a longer period covered by big clouds.
At the end of the afternoon there was during a short time some drizzle. A lot of people are here for the Easter holidays. The main lifts had short waitingtimes. The higher pistes are soft and the lower pistes are soup. There are some patches without snow. All pistes are still open and the liasion with the other valleys are possible.

The weather is unchanged. Alternating sun and shadow. Temperature on 2000 meter 10 degrees and on 3000 meter 3 degrees.
Around 3000 meter there is 2 cm fresh snow. The pistes at that level are very good.

This day was dominated by the clouds. Sometimes sun and in the afternoon the sky was totaly covered by clouds. On 3000 meter
there were some minor snowflakes. At the end of the afternoon some sunny spells occured. The snowcondition of the piste is hardly changed.

It seems that there is less sun every day. Today the sun was hardly present. The temperature is unchanged. Under this circumstances the quality of the pistes degrades a litte bit every day. Skiing down to St. Martin at 1450 meters is still possible.

Again a day with nicely sunny weather. The wind on high altitude was strong and sometimes stormy. Some lifts, such as the Mont Vallon and the Plattière 3, were closed in the course of the day. Also everyone was recommended remaining in its own valley. Around the high tops in Val Thorens there were regularly large clouds. Also small snowflakes flew around (driftsnow). The situation on the higher pistes is unchanged good as a result of the nocturnal cooling to under zero. The lower pistes become every day less good.

Strong winds, heavy overcast, some closed lifts and light snowfall above 2600 meters. On some place the snow had blown away and large surfaces with ice appeared. For the first since a few days the temperature during the day at 3000 meter is below freezing point. In the afternoon the weather improved a little bit. It seems that the "second" Easterweek will be as busy as the first one. Large numbers of new visitors arrived at end of the afternoon and during the evening.

This Easterday was mostly clouded. Most of the clouds were in Val Thorens. In the direction of Méribel and Courchevel there were more sunny spells. The number of visitors is big, but skiers and boarder on the pistes are not present in great numbers. The thick layer of slush on the lower pistes is not attractive to them. The temperature is unchanged and there was hardly no wind.

The second Easterday was far more sunnier than the first one. The whole day there was a blue sky and at the end of the afternoon big cumulus clouds appeared. At the summit of the Bouchet (3240) there was some fresh snow and the first hunderd meters of the piste were beautifull. It was very crowded and a lot of people went down off-piste via the Pierre Lory (glacier du Bouchet)

123_456, So impressed by your photos on here I've decided to buy one, and I've asked Snowheads for advice on your camera model and the more recent versions on this thread. http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=51511

I am not certain but looking at 123-456's very fine photos I think they have been processed using some sort of HDR software such as photomatrix, so you might not get such striking results straight from the camera. |
and I'm wondering whether this is right? I'd hate to buy the camera then be disappointed because I was expecting too much.

For more than a week the temperature is during the day 10 degree or more. The snowboundary is gradually going up day by day. Below 2000 meter there is hardly no snow. Only the pistes to the lower resorts do have snow. The quality of this snow is wet and slushy. Between 2500 and 3000 meter the snowconditions are reasonable to good. On this heights the temperature drops below zero during the night. In the morning the pistes are frozen untill 11 o'clock.

The weather was less beautifull than during the days before. A lot of clouds and bad visibility above 2500 meters. Also strong winds and some lift were closed. For Les Menuires still 11 days to go before the season ends. There is only a small chance that the snowconditions will improve. The coming days it will be colder.

Last night it was storming and in the morning it started snowing. The temperature is several degrees lower and is just above freezing level. During the second part of the afternoon there were some sunny spells. It was possible to ski between, above and in the clouds on a fresh layer of snow of 10 cm. At 2000 meter most of the new snow was disappeared at the end of the day. At higher altitude the new snow is a good supplement of the existing snowlayer.

In the morning sunshine with some clouds. In the afternoon mainly heavy overcast with sometimes snowshowers. The higher pistes are good due to the fresh snow. Below 2400 meter there is wet snow and even lower there is soupe.

In the morning a mixture of sun and clouds. In the afternoon no sun at all. Several snowshowers! In a short there fell more than 5 cm snow. The higher piste were great with the fresh powder, although the visibility was poor. And on this Saturday the pistes are for your own.

This Sunday was dark and grey with sometimes snowshowers. A totally closed overcast and bad visibility on the slopes. Fortunaly there is a fresh layer of snow on the higher pistes. At 2000 meter it is 3 degrees above zero and the snow that arrives on the streets, the rocks and the grass melts away in minutes.

The end of the season is coming very soon. Some restaurants and shops are already closed, The shop that are open have their tradional "sales" with 30-50% reductions. To come down home is becoming worse every day. On some places only a few meters with " brown snow" are available. And the flowers are popping everywher. At higher altitudes the conditions are much better. For example the pistes Venturon and Mont Vallon are good for springtime and moreover very quiet.
Untill 15.00 is was sunny with some clouds. After that time more clouds appeared and during the evening there was some light rain. Since november 2008 it is the first that it is raining at 2000 meters.

A beautifull, sunny and warm day. In the early morning the sky became blue. A few small clouds in the morning and big cumulus in the afternoon. At 3000 meter it is above freezing level. Yesterday night, when it was raining at 2000 meter, a thin layer of fresh sdnow came down above 2700 meter. The coming days it will be (too) warm and during the nights the temperature will hardly go down to zero degrees. All together not very nice for the snowconditions for the coming last days of the season.

Thursday, 23-4-2009.
As expected it was a nice and sunny day. There was some wind from the northwest and this gave the impression that is was less warm. For the last three days of the season in Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel the pisteservices are doing their utmost to hold the liaisons open untill sunday. At some places this results into pistes that are only 1 meter wide and covered with a few centimeters of brown snow. Nearly all the restaurants along these pistes are closed. The numbers of skiers decrease day by day. This morning on La Masse during a downrun less then 10 skiers were present. On the higher slopes the conditions for this time of the season are good. The springsnow requires a different technic with more power but still slides good.

Untill 13.00 it was nice and sunny. After that time it became more and more clouded. At the end of the afteroon there was light snowfall. In the morning the higher pistes are very hard because the wet snow freezed during the night. After noon they became a little softer.

As expected it was very quiet on the pistes. Thousands of Dutch people in cars and busses are arriving in Val Thorens for their Dutchweek 2009. The weather was not bad today. High thin clouds and moderate sunny. Strong winds (föhn) from the south give the impression that is was colder. Due to few skiers/boarders the piste stay in a good condition.

The winterseason in Les Menuires is over. After 135 days the lifts will be closed untill Saturday, december 12th, 2009. During the summermonths July and August some lifts will be open for pedestrians, mountainbikers etc. On Saturday december 12th, 2009 the new season 2009/2010 will start. The next week skiing is only possible in VaL Thorens and Tignes.
The last day of the season 2008/2009 in Les Menuires was disappointing. The stormy wind caused the closure of nearly all lifts.
In the morning the sky was totally covered. The clouds came down during the day and sometimes there was some light snowfall. At the end of the afternoon suddenly sunny spells appeared.
Due to the storm only two lifts were open in Les Menuires : TSD Doron and Menuires. The capacity of these lift was more than sufficient for the last 10 skiers/boarder.
In Val Thorens the circumstances were not better. Only the funitel de Péclet, the TSD Plein Sud and two draglifts were in use.
The waitingtimes for these lifts were extraordinary long.
