They announced to build a new lift to connect Flachau and Wagrain by the season of 2010/11
|
They finished laying the first concrete foundation at the end of the summer.
This is near the midstation of the Flying Mozart gondola on the Flachau side of the valley (but listed as Wagrain).
The concrete takes a year to set before they do much else!
Then it zips you accross the valley to the Wagrain side (which links with Alpendorf). This is the Graffenburg side.
The actual slowest gondola in the world (the graffenburg) is also due to be upgraded and replaced with a new one.

Just back from Mayrhofen: No snow since the 20th December and none forecast (local info) for the next 8-9 days. The cold temperatures (-11 night to -1 in the day) have ensured that the snow remains generally in good nick. Some areas are getting a little thin it should be said. The North facing slopes are hard packed and quite icy in patches. There is no off-piste to speak of without some serious trekking. The last 3 days have seen clear blue skies and some quite excellent skiing conditions (more in trip report in Resorts).
The local I spoke to suggested that temperatures are set to rise towards the end of this week/early next which should precipitate snow - apparently it's usual to see snow when the temperature hits the -1 to +4 region.

Ooh hope so. I'm going to St Anton 18th Jan so I'm hoping those temps across Austria will rise then and snow will come. Like they have said it's just too cold for snow at the mo.

Was in Bad Gastien over the New Year. No snow there since 20 December. Covering on snow in places was light. Best skiing was in Sport Gastien. Well worth the short trip by bus. Took about 20 mins, return trip in the evening was a little longer as traffic was bad heading back into town due to a busy junction at the Eurospar shopping centre. Forecast is for more snow next week, the slopes around Bad Gastien could do with it. Is not a resort for anyone who does not like walking up hills. As it is built on the mountain there are very steep inclines on the streets leading up to the gondola. The gondola opens at 8:30, the last one to the top from the middlestation leaves at 3:30 which seemed early to me. I think in Mayrhofen they open at 8 and last one down was at 4pm last year, but I stand corrected. Apres ski bars I found were very small compared to other resorts I've been to in Austria. If you were part of a large group (say about 30 skiers) you would pack most venues on your own and in some bars all of the group would not get in. Restaurants were exellent but then again I've found that to be the case in any of the Austrian resorts I've stayed in.

Interesting, the guests who stayed in my apartment over New Year said the conditions were so good, they have booked again for next year already.

That's odd, because I skied about a foot of fresh, very dry pow at Sportgastein on the 26th. It snowed a little in the village of Bad Gastein on the night of the 25th, and considerably more at Sportgastein. I left on the 28th, and agree that it was quite thin above Bad Gastein on the Stubnerkogel. I think that was mostly due to the ferocious winds we were getting earlier in the week blowing everything away. Otherwise I found conditions in the Schlossalm sector and the part of Stubnerkogel that faces Angertal to be in very good shape, as well as on the Graukogel. Admittedly I left before New Years, so things may have worsened.
The steep hills were not a problem for us, as our flat was behind the Eurospar and a level, 5 minute walk to the gondola. I don't think I'd want to stay anywhere below the Salzburgerhof, though.
As for apres, not the wildest I've seen, although Haeggbloms was pretty damn lively until about 7:00. I thought the Silver Bullet was a little disappointing, to be honest. In general, the crowd in most all the bars struck me as quite a bit younger than other resorts I've been to.
We also thought the operating hours were rather short, especially on the Senderbahn which is necessary to get back from the Schlossalm sector to Bad Gastein. We had to push it one day to avoid getting stranded (OK, we could then have taken the infrequent bus from Angertal).

It is general, though, that lifts close earlier at this time of year (until around February). In the areas I ski that's often about 1600, sometimes 1545 on lifts where you have to take another lift later. 1530 does seem early.

Great! I was starting to get worried about whether or not we would have the valley white in Schladming, but now it looks like there should be snowfalls down to the valley starting at the weekend.

Sean,
I was in Bad Gastein from 20th to 28th and the snow was best i've seen in 3 years of going there. First few days couldn't even get up to some top lifts as weather was too inclement but then on about the 24th everything opened up. Managed to be amongst the first to head down the north face of Sportgastein and have to say one of the best runs I've ever done. I was also there this last weekend and since it hasnt snowed since xmas everything is pretty hard packed but all runs are open and almost all perfectly pisted. The only run which can get a bit dicy is the run down stubnerkogel into the base station. They need to add some snow cannons there (which they are doing next year apparently) as it gets a bit thin and icy.
As for the rest of what you say about Bad Gastein - what I always tell people is not to expect St Anton, i.e. easier walk to slopes and crazy apres. But then in return you do not have anything like the crowds you get at those places. This last sunday we had pretty much the whole of Graukogel runs to ourselves.
Silver bullet can have its nights, but what you obviously missed out on is that Haegbloms reopens at about 11pm.... goes mental till about 3/4am sometimes. Good fun but destroys skiing the next day.
As for walking up the hills I agree its steep but the solution is to either (i) leave your boots at the base station in the depot (ii) jump on one of the buses (iii) take a rental car (which is what I do)

Was this on the 25th or 26th? If the 26th, I was either right ahead or behind you. If the 25th, I respect your disregard of fog and wind. The 26th at Sportgastein was one of the best days on skis I've had, and the best part was how everyone was only skiing the top part while I did full runs combining the open bowls at the top and the fantastic tree skiing on the bottom half.
Agreed on Graukogel as well. We skied there on the 22nd with literally 5 other people until about 11:00, when it swelled into the dozens. Great lunch and drinks at the hut there, too.

I'm currently in Mayrhofen. The last time it snowed here was 3 days ago, there was a full day and evening of light snow cover. Some of the pistes are still a little icey and the whole resort could do with a little more snow. However, its still great and still very skiable.

Back from a week in Zell Am See, having skied Zell, Hinterglemm and the Mittersill end of the Kitzbuhel area (mini report in reports if anyone's interested).
General impression was that conditions are still mostly excellent, despite having no new snow for a week or so. Low temperatures have meant that what has fallen has not really deteriorated, so skiing down to the valley in all locations was fine, - possibly some of the best conditions I have seen the Zell valley runs in for some years .
The higher up runs above Mittersill were a bit icy because of the wind, but away from the exposed areas there was plenty of snow. It was in general a cold week!
It was snowing as we left Salzburg airport last night so hopefully there were freshies this morning for those still out there.

That's looknig great! I checked J2ski a few hours ago and they were forecasting much less than that! It's not as much as other places seem to be getting, however it is down to the valley every day, which is great. Hopefully I'll have some snowy pictures to put on here!
