Looking at the forecasts for Zermatt, it lloks as though its frostbite weather at higher levels.
So time for balaclavas and total covering of the exposed skin everyone.
Looks like it could be -40 with the windchill on Sunday brrrrrrrrrrrr

When does everyone think this high pressure is going to stick around until? Looks like it's going to be around until at least the end of this week. What's the view on when the next snow is due?

my prediction is that it will snow around the 24th (give a day or either side) and then again around the 8th of jan.
you'll all laugh at me but the snow seems to come (if its gonna) around the half cycles of the moon. So far this year it has followed, there have been other snowfalls to but the big ones have come either at a full or new moon.
Its probably just coincidence but i've been keeping my eye on it for a while and it will be interesting to see if it will continue to happen this season.

Sorry everyone, but I predict its going to get warmer from 23rd on. Not too great for Xmas for lower resorts unfortunately.

P10DW,
Based on what model? There is quite a lot of variance at the moment though!

I think it's gonna get warmer too. Well it can't really get any colder!!!
Hopefully anything above 1500m will be OK

snowangel., it isn't that much of a crazy prediction. The locals here swear by the relationship between the moon's cycles and weather. There are obviously exceptions to the rule, but very often prolonged periods of high pressure do seem to be broken on or around the new moon. Does anyone know if there is any science to back this up???

Markus,
Dont look at the green line after 6 days - it is always way higher than it should be.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Markus,
Although it's getting warmer, Christmas looks to be below average which isn’t bad considering temperatures are on the increase, globally. I would ignore the green line, the dark blue one is the control run. I’m no expert but the most likely is the gray line which is an average of all 20 members, the larger the scatter the more uncertainly there is. What happens after this weekend is anyone guess, but lets hope for cold temperatures and bucket loads of snow…

check out metcheck and j2ski forecast for sunday!!! I think someone should have put in mms instead of cms. Most resorts are predicted to have 260cms of snow!!

J2ski has the huge dump on Saturday for Zell am Ziller (271cm), while Metcheck is showing it for Sunday, and Netweather only has very light snowfall over the weekend, but fairly silly amounts late next week.

something's not right there, 2.7 metres in one day???

Says 2 - 4 cm now Its impossible to snow 270cm in a 24 hour period. Record that I know of is about 150cm...

Metcheck had this a couple of weeks ago too when it predicted temp of -213 degrees or something. Some kind of glitch then

Good grief... every year...
PLEASE do not get tied-in to the concept of "how much" snow will fall. Generally speaking, about the most accurate you can be is, "by 'eck, it's looking set to dump o'er yonder hills" or "ay oop... it's nowt but a sprinkling of icing sugar due" and to expect to translate into "3.4cm of snow will fall" or "23cm of snow will fall" is utterly daft.
All I can tell you... don't shoot the messenger... is that it's going to be warmer than of late for a few days. But bear in mind that it has been nice and cold... so it's only really getting up to average or slightly above in most places, it's not a wrist-slitting moment, is it? Think of all that depth of snow already there and compare it to last year then count your blessings and stop moaning!
It will likely get colder around Christmas eve to Christmas day... but it's a bit changeable as you can see on the charts. Could well be a good bit of snow around over Christmas day across all the alps... but it may be a bit close on the altitude front for lower resorts. Won't be clearer for a few days, so get over the warm spell, it's going to happen and you can't change it!

sorry about the excitement this morning folks - a wee (ok, massive) glitch in our data feed; still not sure of the exact source of the error but our processing now includes a "sanity check" (I failed)... normal service has been resumed.

So, weather geeks, are we going to have any alpine snow in the next week?
|
|
|
|

Looks like its going to be 3 weeks from the last dump to the next..the next 10 days looks dry. Oh well..at least it was a great start and there is plenty of time left for this to be a great season.
|
|
|
|

Still a long way to go, but the long range does look a little pessimistic!

Maybe not. Lots of uncertainty around, but a good chance that there'll be a bit of snow around 26th/27th. Temps are a bit borderline, but reasonable.

For the week ahead:
2 things to look out for in the coming days. A little depression moving along the med coast over the weekend bringing some snow to the eastern end of the pyrenees and the French alps, the farther south the better. So a good dump for the alpes maritimes but only a few flakes around the savoie northwards. Then a weakish looking front may make it to the alps round about boxing day. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for more than a dusting off of this one but it might pick up in the days ahead.
Other than that things look predominantly dry with temperatures around average or a little below.
