skimottaret, a sobering tale. Sounds like a lucky escape. Was it someone on one of Phil's courses?
Glad you had a good day on Saturday - it looked like an epic one as I was driving to Les Arcs! Not quite the best week for race training, but from the sound of it fun was had by all.

rob@rar, Very, very lucky and he seemed to want to blame it on everyone else but himself. The boarder that caused it above him, the ESF instructor that skied to help him , called the pisteures but left to take his two students out of harms way and didnt dig him out.... the pisteurs for charging him 650 Euros for the recovery (no Carre neige)...
Wasnt on a course but was an "expert" skier......
Bluebird on the last day but we didnt need to go off piste as there was tons of fresh snow everywhere.

Sounds like he deserves a slap. On the L1 course last week we discussed that exact scenario (you are teaching and see an avy victim - what is your responsibility to your clients). The ESF guy did the right thing.

skimottaret, I saw people taking some really stupid lines on Saturday too. I stayed on the Palafour/Palet side in the morning then bumped into some friends in the lift queue after lunch and went up Toviere. I didn't bother skiing yesterday, might go out this afternoon though.
If it is any consolation, the glacier is still closed so nobody is getting any training done. Maybe get up there on Wednesday.

Not quite true, La Daille isn't Val D proper, you have to either take the Funival back up from La Daille to the top of the Bellvarde(sp) or take from near the bottom of Tommouse / Creux run the Mont Blanc and another lift to near the top of the Bellvarde(sp) and then you have three options, the Face (black), Santons (blue / red / dead bodies) or Epaule Charvet (probably a shade more black) and then you're into Val D proper.
Edited once for accuracy on where the Mont Blanc is....

im going to tignes at christmas ive been before a few years ago and was wondering if they have replaced the old Tignes-val d'isere link, it was those 2 slow two man chairlifts when i was there used to spend an hour trying to get up it. Did they ever implement the 8 man they were planning on doing?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Tom Lowe, do you mean the link from Val to Tignes? One of them, the Tommeuses chair up to Toviere, is an 8-pack.

Yeah, todays conditions were pretty fantastic. Tried to get to Le Fornet but couldn't quite make it as the return lifts weren't running.

Isn't there bus from Val to Tignes after the lifts close? If you do reach Le Fornet you could always ski all the way down ad get the bus back into Val then take the cable car up to the top of Bellvarde

This isn't just any old bus service it's the "train rouge" -probably the best bus service in the world.
I stayed most of a seson or two in Le Fornet, so I've fond memories of that bus service, especially when we missed the last one back to Le Fornet on a few nights.

indeed. Bu in any case, le petit train rouge only runs in Val d'isere (and satellite villages like Le Fornet and La daille) - I was actually thinking of a bus from Val d'Isere round to Tignes Le Lac, which Iwas told leaves at about 5.30pm to repatriate skiiers who miss the last lift - or am I making thiings up?

Looks like there were a couple of fairly large slides on the south side of the valley today from the look of one of the web cams in Tignes.net....hope no one caught in them....
Weather looks amazing though...cant wait till 25th Jan !
