Snow Forecast is waaaay out on the freezing level - the outside temperature is -1 and Snow Forecast was forecasting the zero isotherm at 1750m...

Update on conditions - Avoriaz had some excellent skiing this morning - courdroy slopes on Arare and Chavanette. Snow cannons going in Avoriaz. Now we are just waiting to see what happens in the next 72hrs with the snow coming and how much!! Talk of 10cm to up to 60cm!!! |
Completely agree with snowandtrek, the conditions up top today were great - almost "hero snow". I put in some of the best turns of the season so far today.
Lower areas, though, are still a mess. The current problem is that the articificial snow isn't sticking to the underlying ice - but there's enough there to make a good base in most places.

It decided not to snow last night after all.
We skied the Fornet bowl, Arare and Hauts Forts areas today - all had good now up top, down to 1800m
It started snowing in Avoriaz at around 14:30 and started snowing in Morzine from around 15:30. We've had a couple of centimetres already...
...will do you an update later.

rayscoops - I'm not sure which webcam you're looking at - there haven't been any cows around for a while.
Anyway, it's getting heavier - 3cm on the west balcony and it's reasonably wet snow - which will piste nicely...

So, will you be hiking up in the morning before the lifts open? Or can you wait for the first lift?
Or is Morzine passe, and it's straight up to Avoriaz for you?

Aren't we all getting giddy. I have just been to see a client on his farm in Blackburn. I was telling him how I was going skiing on saturday and it was snowing heavily. He was totally unimpressed as snow was the bane of his life. Some people are hard to please.

Hi All,
My first post, so please be gentle with me.....
At last some snow falling - the consensus seems to be about 20-25cm. Cold temperatures are then forecast through the weekend and my question is this; How effective are snow cannons in adding to this base to get Morzine & Les Gets into the state where most runs can open?
I've seen cannons chuntering away in other resorts but I'm unsure how much of the old White Gold they can actually produce given consistently low temperatures over a period of 5 or so days.
Rgds,

red 27, one advantage of Morzine/Nyon/LesGets is that the terrain is mostly alpine - i.e. grass. While that may have implications for snow bonding to it (and I know no-one who knows enough about that...) it does mean that there are far fewer nasty rocks to protrude - and so a lesser snow base can sometimes be adequate.
But a lot will depend on temperatures, quantities, densities, etc., etc. and whether they can actually start the ratracs now that they've probably diverted all the batteries to alternative summery purposes...
Also, on snowmaking, whether the reservoirs are full enough to actually use the water for snow making rather than drinking. I understand that some places in the Alps have a bit of a water shortage. (that's what they get for outsourcing to Thames Water!)

David Murdoch, red 27, The reservoirs in Morzine and Avoriaz are very full so there should be plenty of water for the cannons. Can't be so sure about Les Gets as haven't been over there for a few weeks!!!
We can usually hear the cannons if they are running on Pleney from our apartment so will keep you updated 1st thing tomorrow!
|
|
|
|
|
|
snowandtrek, I will comment that I wasn't singling Morzine/Les Gets out as having inadequate water storage but I have heard that some of the more southerly alpine stations have had supply shprtages, so it is a factor to bear in mind...
Have the Morzine or Les Gets Tourist Offices given you folks any steer on what might happen if, say, 40 cms arrived in the village (apart from gridlock and a serious MP sense of humour failure as large numbers of tourists try and put their chains on going up the hill towards the Sporting)?
|
|
|
|
|
|
David Murdoch, Don't worry ... it's recognised that Les Gets has a major water shortage problem. The mairie's crazy plans were scuppered a couple of years ago ... they struggle with water - hence current construction 'ban'. Locals will confirm that there were cuts last year to domestic premises -- inter season.

22cm on the west balcony and around 8cm on south balcony. Don't ask the exact maths about additiveness, but it's broadly additive as both balconies are sheltered by the eves...

Ok, off to bed...
...and it's puking down with no sign of stopping.
What's frustrating is that tomorrow all the runs I know that I shouldn't go near because of the avalanche risk will be tracked out by the idiots who don't even know what an avalanche is...
...ah, well...
