@Whitegold,
Even if i was a wild supporter of Austrian Heliskiing.. i would Never go to the Lech operation.
Reason.
When there is Fresh Pow..there is:-
Only 2 Drop off Points
They take so many groups its tracked out within a Day
Groups are not assessed.for ability.
They bring rich clients over from Ischgl who jump the line
Incredibly expensive for a couple of runs if you do not get held up by the amateurs (carpet skiers)
Helicopters are dangerous..more than people realise.
https://people.com/archive/cover-story-i-am-alive-vol-41-no-14/
Main reason lack of terrain.
You can ski fresh Pow in Stanzertal easily 1 week after a dump and you dont need Helicopters or Lifts

Still very warm in Arlberg. Will the season start on time? We are meant to arrive on Dec 17.

@that_econ_prof, in past years it has happened that end of October 70 cm snow fell, in the villages. After which it was springlike in November and further on. Skiing at Christmas was purely on artificial.
In other words: everything is possible, and yes, it is definitely to early to worry.

@that_econ_prof, If you look on the weather thread there are lots of worries similar to yours. Much like the East coast of the US we are in the middle of a very dry, mild weather pattern, great for mountain walking and photos less good for building up a base for skiing. No sign of a change before the middle of the month but fingers crossed for a different weather pattern then. As ever looking more than 14 days in advance is nothing more than guesswork (even 7 days is dubious) so what the conditions might or might not be 7 weeks down the line is impossible to know.

@stanton, is your memory that short? I'm well aware of the excellent start of last season.
I was referring to 2014-2016 (yes, three in a row) that had a very warm late Autumn/early Winter, resulting to an almost completely artificial Christmas, snow wise that is. It was still pleasant though.

@stanton, Not sure what weather forecast you have been reading but none that I have seen suggest any change in the next 10 to 14 days. Cold enough at night to run snow cannons if that is wanted. There is the odd suggestion of light snow showers (not enough for skiing) around the 18th but too far away to take seriously. Even so I am not that optimistic about any skiing early season, yes we could be hit with the sort of large amount we had last December but that was very unusual, it was the only time I can remember that amount of snow at the time of year in the 25 years I have been here. More typical for a good season is unsettled weather starting in mid October allowing a base of snow to be built up in the mountains even if it is wet & miserable here. The dry weather pattern will break down at some point just hope that is soon rather than in January!

It’s quite simple:
usual = december with poor snow
unusual = december with deep snow

Snow Forecast does not have good reputation for forecasting, usually far to optimistic about likely snow fall.
The local bod who the tourist board uses says
Quote: |
By the end of this week, high pressure will continue to dominate, bringing us mostly calm and mild autumn weather. Until Sunday, and likely into Monday next week, only a few harmless clouds will accompany the sunshine, as we’ve seen in recent days. Meanwhile, the prevailing mild temperatures will remain largely unchanged. However, a significant shift in weather patterns is in sight. Weather models, though, have yet to agree on the exact direction of this trend, which will likely become clearer in the coming days. What seems certain is that the weather will turn noticeably more variable and cooler. |
Wepowder (not sure their automatic forecast is any better than snow forecast though a bit more detailed) has an updated outlook https://wepowder.com/en/weblog/2024/11/06/end-of-persistent-high-pressure-pattern-in-sight . They suggest a Genoa low is possible which doesnt necessarily bring much snow to St Anton but does suggest a change away from sunny & mild

@stanton, you might live nearby but you clearly dont eat in many of the bars & restaurants. Schnitzel mit Pommes (assuming pork) was about €18 last season, of course you can pay more, much more if you choose to give your money to the folk who own Base Camp. Beer was about €5 in the cheaper places like the station bar or the Kebab place, more like €6.50 in places like Dorfstuben, even the Moose was about €8, again always possible to pay more if you so choose. These are the sort of prices I would expect to pay in the coffee houses in central Vienna or the beer places in the centre of town here. Prices have gone up everywhere, Anton has become expensive but you can still find reasonable places to eat & drink with a small amount of effort. The more expensive places dont seem to have any problems finding customers, lots of visitors dont seem to care about how much it costs.

@stanton, given that you're in Switzerland, I would expect you to compare with Zürich and Zermatt, much closer by than Vienna...
Instead you choose to keep on moaning about St.Anton....
Oh, and my rule is; a Wiener Schnitzel is only with veal, and should at least cost 30 euro to keep up with general international prices (Munich, Amsterdam, New York etc etc)

@hsdee, No doubt the new Schindlergratbahn is an improvement, warmer & quicker and no need to protect your calves when stuck in the middle of two clueless folks! However the place has lost something, the experience of being transported over the ridge to be presented with a view down one of the couloirs beneath your feet was very much part of the ambience of the place as was going past the "Nur für Geübte" sign for the first time.

Running a restaurant is very hard work and much more difficult to make a living from it in the past few years, especially with stingy folk like you around.
Anyway back to snow & skiing, despite the change in the weather pattern it doesnt look like much snow in sight possibly the odd snowflake next Tuesday and then again the following week. Getting colder though so should be able to run the snow cannons, no ski touring on the horizon at all. You might have to stick to the carpet if you want to ski!

@hsdee, Nice, used to like Jules bar – had to squish into the Galzig when it closed. Roughly same location?

Yes, perhaps even a bit nearer to the galzig lift, by the tourist office, where superdry was. Funny to see a sport shop becoming a bar for a change :

Good news about Jules, it was a decent bar and draught Augustiner which hopefully will survive the move.
Looks like a few snowflakes tonight, then back to dry but colder weather then maybe snow next week though not likely to be a lot of the stuff, enough to justify running snow cannons though.

Generally people your age have back problems because they DON't back squat and deadlift. I'm sure you are not in that category though.
Pick the heaviest dumbbell and hold the bottom (well femur parallel to the floor) for 7 seconds. Explode up. 3 or 4 of those in a set will blow you up. Walking lunges with no wedding step will also be great.

Yeh I think I've had grotesque flexibility all my life leading to severe anterior pelvic tilt, in turn leading to my squats/deadlifts always having overly incorporating my lower back. I've posted videos of me online squatting/deadlifting and people always have said it looks good, but I've spent months unable to walk due to them so I've just sacked them off for good.
Yeh I've really been enjoying Bulgarian split squats. I do them with two 30kg dumbbells currently, if the the weights in st Anton are far below that I'll try the pause technique you mentioned, or some lovely (horrible) lunges. I'm sure I can keep my legs looking ok either way!

Are there any lunch spots around Arlberg which are cheap and cheerful? Also are there any which are expensive and to be avoided?
Last season I didn't find some gems until right at the end!

@boabski, Its good and far better than the local brews but I prefer Tegernsee which is available on draught (if you ask) at the Dorfstubn and in small bottles at the Moose.
@Thew2002, Around St Anton most of the places are self service spots owned by the lift company all much the same and are often crowded at lunchtime. Zürs & Lech is mostly table service which I am not a fan of as it takes up skiing time but I know lots like it. The views from Rüfikopf and Balmalp are good though Balmalp has a nonsense VIP Champagne section. Base Camp next to Galzig has become crazy expensive, occasionally stop for a morning coffee (simply because it is convenient especially on a bad weather day) but would otherwise avoid. Jules mentioned above was a decent enough spot in its previous incarnation.

Oh a super important one to me, are there any bars in Arlberg you can cheekily get a glass of tap water? Or drinkable water to fill up a bottle...? This was very hard to find in France...
