Seriously, i don't know the area so well yet, if we get a dusting in a few days (and our prayers are answered and the wind leaves it alone) anyone able to suggest some off-piste that might be fun to ski with my brother when he comes to visit? |
Not out there so no idea what is, or might be, in condition, but early season last year the best stuff was in Stuben (North face, Geissleger area)and the top of Mattun and Schoengraben area by the t-bar. Rendl (esp. Rossfall) is also a good bet.
Take a look at Franz Trimmel's new site, he's put his excellent Google Maps overlay on there: http://alloffpiste.com/skiing/piste-ski-routes-stanton-stuben-lech-zuers/ and also get hold of Andy Thurner's book which you can pick up in shops in the area: http://www.outdoor-adventures.at/engl.buch.html

Of course Warth also worth looking at now it's linked. Never skied there but sounds like some good off piste and it has a reputation for good snow...

dulcamara, Rendl is far too rocky yet I'm told by locals, needs more snow.......some proper due 25/26th I believe. Should be OK on north face on grassy aspect slopes then, and Rossfal, also north face Albona but don't tell everyone!

No new snow came lastnigh.
Rendl opened today. The snowmakers have done a great job to get the pistesopen. Its limited.
There is no off piste (so to speak)on Rendl unless you want to break your
ankles.kness & hips.
I really would not pay any money for off piste guiding right now.
We need more snow & nothing is in the forecast until aftet Xmas. At least 0.5 1 metre dump to consider going off piste.

Echo what stanton says about Rendl. Had only been open less than 3 hours when I saw the first person coming off dangling beneath a helicopter (don't know if there was anything earlier, been indoors working), not sure if on piste or off.

The local Farmers have called this one right hopefully.
Significant clash of weather systems Tues/Weds with snow high up.
Thursday 26th onwards we will snow at all levels.
Farmers predict min 0.5M.
Maybe we get the perfect storm (repeat of Hurricane Andrea) on the Arlberg Axis
Pistes on Rendl in really good shape & the place to be today why all the new inbounds (tourists)are on The South side :

My thoughts exactly. Tried Rendl when it opened on Friday and would not have considered venturing off-piste. The guy on the end of the winch was the first of three evacuees I saw in the course of the day. One small excursion earlier in the week proved that it was a week to try to hone the on-piste technique rather than take silly risks for little reward.
Hopefully there'll be a lot more snow when I return in Feb.

Pistes in Lech and Zurs in pretty good condition today. Some expanses of brown on sunny aspects and the odd bit of grass, but nothing that would bother anyone that's ever skied in Scotland. New link to Warth seems to be having teething troubles. It was stopped more than it was running yesterday afternoon and folk in the hotel we're in have used it twice this week and both times it's stopped for over an hour.

It's worth getting the cable car up from Lech and skiing to Zurs. Lovely snow and quiet runs with beautiful scenery. If you need a bus from Zurs head for the side of the village towards Stuben/St Anton. We dropped down to the bus stop on the Lech side of town to get the bus back to Lech. At 3pm they were all full so didn't stop. Eventually we got on a bus back up into Zurs and stayed on it until it went back to Levh.

Hey guys,
A good friend of mine, who's an excellent skier, is in St Anton this and next week, by himself (long story). I told him some snowheads would be around and might want to meet up. If anyone wants his number to share some turns, PM me.
That's him (Rendl pow last year):

Some lifts in Lech closed today by high winds. But still no queues and it sounds like the weather here is still a lot better than back in the UK.

Higher lifts all closed. Rendl now completely closed due to very strong winds from the south.
Storm approaching

Half of Lech closed today by winds so I got the bus to Zurs. It was 100% shut by the time I got there so I stayed on the bus to go to Stuben. It was shut too. So half an hour after getting on the bus I got off at the stop I'd got on at. Skiing in Lech was actually pretty good, no queues and pistes holding up well despite the +9 temp. Really hoping the snow starts falling tonight.

Folks. The south facing slopes took quite a hit today with the super strong fohn (warm wind from the south).
Up on Rendl this morning b4 they closed down it was blowing over 100km/hr
Tonight we have precipitation in the air hopefully by the morning it will be white.

Still to warm therefore no snow this morning below 1800M.
2cm (max) new at Galzig.
Will snow during the day.
After today situation is unclear except no major snowfal expected in next 7 days. Therefore the Off Piste situation remains the same i.e. Desperate to Zero.

Started to snow in resort about 10am and is still going, nothing heavy though. Can imagine visibility isn't brilliant up the mountain.

Snow started in Lech just after 9am and has being going ever since. Mostly quite fine snow but the flakes are getting a bit bigger now. Visibility on the mountain was ok - several hundred metres. Going to be fun tomorrow.

Not really much or sufficient came out of the storm yesterday.
Officially around 20-22cms over Ulmerhutte,Galzig.
Maybe upto 40cm (drift)on Rendl.
Town was filling up fast lastnight with the New Year folk.

Dont be fooled by the POW. I seen so many people on Rendl
This morning falling into the trap. All looks like Powder but hidden rocks are just below the surface.
Multiple yard sales. Can see a few ankles & hips going today.
This is one of the busiest days of the season so i expect the medical services

Agree with Stanton, there's an attractive but thin layer of fresh snow covering the rocks, saw a few guys wreck skis today on Rendl. Its busy here but not as bad as some years, or maybe we got lucky, didn't see a queue all day, except Zammermoosbahn, but that's normal (why did they take out the Feldherenhuegel lift all those years ago???).

sah,
They had to reassign he old Tbar lifties on the new galzibahn.
Likewise the new Tanzboden costs two more lifties than the old T bar.
