Temperatures remaining mild till Monday then falling through the day. Heavy snow falling Monday and then to low levels on Tuesday in the western Alps. Less so in the southern Alps.
Strong winds and heavy snow Monday and Tuesday in the west could cause disruption and lift closures, so keep an eye on that.
GFS continues to show a wide spread from 17 Jan with the op a mild outlier. ECM keeps it well below average in the Alps until at least 18 Jan.

@davidof, that's what we were joking about last night having walked down into the village over very wet roads etc and saying it's going to be a mare when it freezes.
In fact I can see below me that the Ingham bus delivering stuff to a chalet near us has wisely decided not to venture up our little hill.
So can imagine what it must be like at the likes of 1850 etc
Walking across the fields as well last nigh the dogs found it really tough as the snow was too heavy for them to run through so they were having to jump from footprint to foot print.

Thanks Nozza, do you think that Austria might finally see some snow next week?
@PeteMan, well it has been snowing a bit in Austria. Snow lying on the ground in Vienna last week. Certainly less snow than in the west, but less mild too (though like everywhere in the Alps and Pyrenees too mild for the time of year) Next week should see snow to low levels in Austria more so further west.

Giant Slalom in Adelboden cancelled due to mild weather.
2006-7 was the last time I remember such a poor season.
(Though that said even though 06/07 was a poor season there was still plenty of fun to be had).

06/07 was a weak El Niño year.
Have to go up this afternoon, expecting devastation, BUT, that bluey forecast for next week is a big positive

It's in the Express so must be true
http://www.express.co.uk/news/weather/632611/UK-Weather-Snow-snowbomb-red-alert-UK-coldest-winter-58-years
Blistering Polar gales, several feet of snow and near-record low temperatures will grind the country to a standstill until MARCH, forecasters warn.
The first taste of what could be a historic whiteout will arrive THIS WEEKEND as freezing winds drive in from Siberia and the North Pole.
Parts of Britain has experienced the first of the snow coverings today as sheets of snow covered Cumbria as the region attempted to recover from devastating floods over the Christmas and New Year period which put thousands of homes under water.
Britain is on alert for the week-long winter blast to unleash widespread heavy snow and -13C (8.6F) temperatures.

Can anyone please give me some advice on Avalanche awareness. Im off to LC tomorrow and as there is real bad weather forecast I am concerned about safety. Im not an off piste skier just piste but as im with my young son I want to ensure safety is key. Is there a possibility even on the piste that this could happen. I do not want to come across as naive but want to be 100% sure. I intend to use low runs? Sorry if this is a daft question?

You know it makes sense.
Not a daft question but if you are staying on the open runs you should be OK, relying on the avalanche awareness of the experts who run the resort.

@harrymac, never say never but if you ski open pistes then the resort will have done all they can to minimise avalanches on the open pistes. If the visibility is bad then skiing on pistes that go through trees will help you and your son.

It's the "100%" bit which is tricky. Although incredibly rare, on-piste fatalities from avalanches have happened (one in Les Arcs a couple of season ago, one in Val Thorens I think). But these unfortunate incident are so rare I don't think you should give it a first thought, never mind a second. You are much more likely to be injured on piste from other types of accident, and even those are relatively unusual. If a piste is open you shouldn't worry about avalanche risk.

Things are looking bad for the pyrenees. After the good snowfall at the beginning of this week, mild temperatures and rain. Most of the recent snow melted.
Just a dusting of snow for next week and mild temperatures and a lot of rain for next weekend in the forecast (Andorra).

The season so far has been ok for those out in resort all season with some good early season skiing in Oct/Nov, and then some nice sun, and finally some powder in recent days but for the average punter/holiday-maker who has skied Christmas, New Year, or the week just ended the weather (rain/wind) and/or snow conditions (grass/ice/rocks) have been disappointing. Let's hope things improve for those with ski holidays booked for the rest of the season.

GFS 06z stayed cold in the Alps from Monday out to 18 Jan after which it went milder than average, but was very much an outlier with the majority of the ensembles staying below average.

3b Meteo show it going from -19 to 2 degrees on the 19th
@scotspikey, no idea what 3b meteo is but taking a wild stab in the dark I'd say it is based on the GFS op run. As I mentioned above it goes very mild at that date, but has very little support from the rest of the ensembles.
