If I JLOTFW it's snowing heavily here at 1,400m in Serre Chevalier and temp -4.5 so nice and cold!
Was having tech mares with the Pan & Tilt Webcam yesterday but all up and running (see link in sig below) and whilst in the process of pulling my hair out I set up the original Webcam which is http://www.stylealtitude.com/staticwebcam.html so you too can JLOTFW as it were
So Metociel, YR.no and even Snow-Forecast are all singing from the same hymn sheet with about 25cm for here, only NetWeather is giving 45cm plus.
I'll be happy with 25cm and then looks like further top-ups of 10's or so most days next week, which is to a certain extent safer than getting 75+ in one hit.
Yesterday was out on the hill having skinned up and on the descent bumped into a very experienced guy I know who had really surprised himself and his client by setting off a slide on a slope that is usually safe (classic heuristic trap).
Think we'll be in the trees tomorrow.

@Weathercam, or even if you look out the window. But it does make you sound so much more tough and superior when you swear and swagger.
You need to keep an eye on this little fella today, it is the temperature at 1800 meters at Chamrousse
in general it will snow to 200-300 meters below the zero isotherm which is currently at 1800m. Off piste it will be heavy, claggy stuff. On piste, not too bad once bashed, a good base.
It looks like we are set for 4 days of pretty torrential rain to 2000 meters in the French Alps, maybe higher in the south. Given the poor base off piste below that altitude this won't be good. Hopefully the pistes will survive better.

I think so too. That's not to say the snowline may not reach 2000m in places at times, but not for four days across the whole of the French Alps.

Snow at 1200m in Chatel at 11.00 (GMT+1) - has been for an hour or so. Cham Meteo are predicting fluctuating freezing levels of between 1400 and 1700 over the next 3 days then dropping.

@davidof, lot colder down here thankfully, now -3.6, though will not help any consolidation up top!
Surprised risk is only 2-3 and 3 after what I saw yesterday and snow fall today
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I don't think anyone has forecast the snowline correctly. Just have to wait and see.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I'm just reading what Meteo France says, for example Haute-Tarentaise this afternoon
Pluie Neige: 2000 m
Iso 0°C 2300 m
Let's hope they are wrong. Seems to be warmer further north this afternoon, so the south may be spared somewhat. Snowline 1400m in Serre Chevalier.

You know it makes sense.

Meteo Suisse says Western CH going up to 1600m today (1200-1400 in Valais), 1800 tomorrow, down to 1300m Saturday, 1000m Sunday and Monday and then getting really cold.

Nobody could have gotten it 100% "correct"... it was always going to have massive variables caused by the strength of the storm!

@davidof, yes, but that's a long way from being uniform across the whole of The French Alps for four days.
A quick look around and you can also see they are suggesting 1500m for Mont Blanc
Hence why I think it was a little sweeping like the last time you said it would rain under 2000m for a while ; )
It'll be up and down as the storm comes through and again early next week.

It's still snowing hard in Chamonix Town 1000m, but the flakes are getting decidedly smaller. Looking on the positive side while the high fl will mean heavier snow, it should also result in more stable snow, especially when the subsequent big freeze forecast for next week kicks in. I suspect higher altitudes will remain less stable.

The problem is, two different forecasters for Haute-Tarentaise and Mont Blanc, Thierry Arnoux and Gilles Brunot. So who is right? Thierry sees high snowline and FL, Gilles a iso zero at 1200m, 1500 for snow line, was he overdoing the Genepi in the Bar Nat last night? a simple inversion of FL and SL? Or probably a typo: 1200 instead of 2100. That's a 600 meter difference between zero iso and SL.
pluie-neige 1500 m
Iso 0°C 1200 m
Isere tends with Thierry's view on things. Let's hope they are wrong.

Agreed but here at least there has been at times 500-600m difference!
Depends where and when you are talking about. It will vary.

My thermometer is very reliable but lacks finesse.
If the gutter is dripping it's not freezing, if it's not, it is.

And for another view, Calepin, who the local ski tourers use sees Friday zero iso at 2400 with rain to 2200 meters under foehn like conditions then SL at around 2000m for Saturday dropping to 1700 m on Sunday.
As the pattern shifts, the jet shifts south and assuming it persists it would increasingly allow more snow to reach the Southern Alps.

Is it fair to say that it will be a generally wet weekend below (say)1500m but possibly higher.? After the weekend we are looking at a big reduction in temperature and some decent snow fall down to low levels? Talking Northern Alps here.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Yep for northern French Alps. Though could be mild at first on Monday as storm passes through, temperatures look like dropping rapidly as it does.
You know it makes sense.

Just back from walking dogs into the village, and now having to think twice where I throw the snow ball for them as they were engulfed in powder when then jumped over into a field and it all collapsed over them which must be akin to a human getting buried!
But as it's still below freezing -2.7 at 1,400 it's really light powder and they just bounced their way out of it.
Had to buy some hard core extreme kit in the village, some gaiters!!
They are just below the knee as the fields we walk across, the snow is getting very deep, be out with the snowshoes soon to get the bread !

BBC talking of the jet stream push and colder conditions for next week, hopefully will consolidate the Scottish snow that falls this week!

It's not snowing here yet, but it's not far off. Bluebird this morning, but now the peaks are hidden in cloud - the sort of cloud that just feels heavy and pregnant. Bring it!

Great morning in Les Arcs especially below the treeline, but getting warmer and windier now so back home now. All the high lifts are now shut, as avy risk is rising to 4 this afternoon. Currently 0.8 degrees as 1800m, and (just about) snowing. More Thierry than Gilles.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@dobby, but it's going to be great Jack Russel tossing conditions tomorrow me thinks
In fact we're doing Jack Russel tossing at 16:00 (15:00 UK time) TODAY in front of the Cams
