Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Today it is 23c in Oban and only 13c in London. It not often that the north west of Scotland is 10c warmer than the far south east Laughing
Spring time is notable in the Uk for bringing up some of the biggest temperature and weather anomalies.

Looks lovely at Glencoe http://ec2-3-8-55-160.eu-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/cams/glencoe/

Currently 21.4c at the bottom of the access chair Cool

Thanks for posting - interesting data.

My personal observation this year was that the conditions were more polarised than I've ever seen, both by region and by altitude.

Mid December, driving from Chamonix (1000m ASL) to Sestriere (2000m ASL) was like going from winter (decent snowfall accumulations in town) to autumn (almost no snow in town, scratchy on the mountain) despite the much higher elevation in Sestriere.

Similarly, >2000m it's been a good year, but at 1000m it's been very tough. Resort run to Argentiere (1200m) was in worse condition in Feb 2024, than in May 2023.

The 2023-2024 Western European Alps winter season will go down in history as the rainiest in decades, perhaps of all time since modern skiing began.

It rained for weeks on end, from Dec to Mar, often up to 2000m, occasionally up to 4000m. In midwinter.

The rain was unprecedented.

Drawing back to these snowfall stats from Val D’I can you imagine what how it would be early 1970s with the internet, social media , snowheads …..we would all be going into hyperboil ….the snowfall totals , 2 seasons under 2m total ! They were truly grim until 77/8 also without snow making , @whitegold would be having a field day

There was a huge temperature difference either side of the Pennines yesterday. We left Keswick which had reached a hot 25c and just 50 miles to the east at only 200masl it was just 11c! Even the temperature in Derwentwater was a pleasant 23c!
A 14c difference is more comparable to the centre of London and the summit of Cairngorm on an average day rather than a short hop either side of the Pennines.
The reason? The North Sea, which is still rather cool at this time of year giving thick cloud and no sunshine in this part of North East England. This is also the reason that northern England can never stay hot for very long snowHead

Heavy surface tension drives heavy underground tension.

Good post.

Of the last 20 Swiss winters, only 4 have seen above-average snowfall on the glaciers.

Some 8 (twice as many) have been below-average.

Can see why the Swiss glaciers are disappearing.

Same in Ireland but weather has actually been terrible and very wet. It seems the record breaking heat relates to the average temperature, there have actually been relatively few warm periods.
