We are a beginner family looking for a day on the slopes. We did Glenshee last year. Any thoughts on snow coverage at Glenshee vs Glencoe vs Lecht? we're in Glasgow so would prefer to be closer than further, but I here the Lecht is more beginner appropriate. Thoughts????

Hadn't considered Cairngorm - kids are more fluid than me (at 40, I can get down a hill using a mixture of luck, aches, snow plough and turns!). Bit closer to glasgow and more do-able as a day out. Thx.

Decent in Glencoe this morning, not as windy as forecast and a few inches of fresh snow. Visibility good mid morning but now snowing again down to the car park, and quite flat light at the top. Some runs getting icy too as the fresh snow wears off.

i NEED more turns in my life, Scotland seems like it could be the answer, I'm in the midlands (England that is). What advice do you all have? I don't mind earning my turns, and don't mind sleeping in less desirable conditions ie cheap doss holes back of my van etc, I just wanna ski more,

Huckacliff duckabranch, Follow the weather reports for a week or two before you plan a trip and be ready to go at the drop of a hat as for accomadation Glencoe have the new hobbit hutches which look cool and cheap and lift share with someone fuel is probably the biggest cost I'm blessed with a brothers cottage inbetween Coe and gorm so its cheap for me but if you search around you can find places, its definitely worth it when the conditions are good as the skiing can be awesome last trip I had here it snowed 14 inches and some more after I left top to bottom skiing at Glencoe dosnt get much better than that in the UK.

Huckacliff duckabranch, if you're happy in the van then a Tour d'Ecosse would be top of the bill, that way you can follow the weather etc., plenty of sites in between the centres (and on site in a couple of places) for showers etc. we're still realistically early season so bide your time

barry, I'd be looking mid feb time, as I'm in morzine for 3 weeks im Jan, then sauze d'oulx start of march, a cheeky 4 day adventure, do you normally have most of your snow cover by mid feb?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Depends
Not possible to commit this far out mate, could be oxster deep, could be stripped. I generally favour March but that was shot to hell last year (later was better)
Keep an eye on things and be ready to haul ass (I will go so far to say you'd likely be unlucky not to score mid feb, particularly if you're willing to earn em)

Nice pics OAP. Good to see a base building at Glenshee.
Had a great day at Glencoe yesterday. I forget just how challenging and spectacular that place is. IMO there is no where in the Alps that can hold a stick to Glencoe in terms of overall challenge and character.
Learn to ski there and you will be a master.....very quickly

Heading up to Glencoe with the caravan Saturday. I guess my plan for "ski-in" accomodation has failed.
Staying up there till the New Year (weather permitting)
Anyone else up?

PeterS - nearly did Glencoe yesterday, if I'd known you where up I'd have headed over. Everything was looking suitably green and wet in the Pennines over Christmas. Some pictures of Harwood in the North Pennines thread at some point over the next day or so. Going to sort the rest of the Glenshee ones first.

Ooof, poor old Glenshee. We stopped off there on the way up to Ballater, wondering if we could get a couple or so hours on the nursery slope with the kids. No way, compared to reports on here of Cairngorm and the west, they're really suffering so far this season.
After an over-nighter, we were up at The Lecht today as we were recommended their magic carpet on the nursery slopes for the kids. Brilliant instructor called Lara worked wonders on our 2 (aged 4 & 6) and they were skiing the length of the nursery slopes in one by the middle of the afternoon.
Definitely more snow there but with the rise in the freezing level that's forecast to stay, they'll struggle soon too. Nursery slopes had lots of sheet ice but mrs grazzenger and I skied the opposite side on pretty decent cover (considering).
