The name of the dish has followed a track of borrowing across several languages of central and south-eastern Europe. The dish originates from the Slavic countries and thus Austrian-German term Palatschinke is borrowed from Czech palačinka, that in turn from Hungarian palacsinta, and that in turn from Romanian plăcintă (a cake, a pie), where it ultimately derives from Latin placenta (a flat cake), a word of Greek origin.[3] Palačinka is also the name in most Slavic languages (Ukrainian, Slovak - palacinka, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Macedonian, Serbian, Slovenian- palačinka, палачинка). In Polish, the equivalent is called a naleśnik, in Romanian clătită. |

I'm going to St Anton in a few weeks and interested to compare it to the big French resorts I've been to previously. I hear the apres is pretty wild

Well, I'll try not to be too critical as I'm sure each are good for different things, but it'll be hard not to.
How about I rephrase to "interested to see what the differences are" then

Why am I wandering around Edinburgh singing "Ich bin ein pandabär" after 7 days in Mayrhofen? Is there a cure, will 5 days in Soelden help?
Confused, Scotland

Still hunting the boob with fag ash dessert in Mayrhofen.
Any suggestions of a restaurant that will do it!

Jac Sprat, Just look for Germknödel on any of the menus. It is a large steamed yeasty dumpling filled with some kind of jam. The filling varies according to each and every chef. Mostly a dark jam/compôte from plums, blackberries, blackcurrents or similar. I've had some even with apricot jam in them. I ask them not to include the fag ash (crushed poppyseeds) as I don't like them. I always now order mine with vanilla sauce (custard to thee and me); I tried it with the melted butter once and could not cope with all that melted fat!

Jac Sprat, as Samerberg Sue says just look for Germknödel. Very common dessert dish in Austria. Not having been to Mayrhofen and picking a mountain caf at random the Schneekarhütte does a posh Viennese version, Weiner Germknödel.

Interesting banter about the cost of a strand of spaghetti and a minuscule bier - material cost circa €2.00, or to you sir, madam, on a mountainside, €50 (plus tip)...
I could point out that dinner at the Savoy Grill is quite pricey and the skiing is awful... although the standard of service is generally impeccable.
Does no-one self-cater anymore? One can become very inventive when considering the heavily discounted "yellow sticker" items at the butchers counter in the supermarket - any "savings" are of course lost on a half-decent vin rouge.

I self cater at home, not on holiday! (where is the outraged emoticon?) Not really, but s/c on a ski holiday just seems to much like hard work. My cooking skills are prob pretty poor after some serious apres.

If you're down the Nasserrein end of the resort away from the Mooserwirt and KK, try the Fang bar. Always used to be a good night in there

Still is. Keller Bar under Nassereinerhof is also good for a mor chilled out après with a good live band. Friday nights in Tom Dooley's too, yet another fantastic young, local band.

Does DJ Gerhard still start apres in the Mooserwirt with Final Countdown? He must be sick of it by now.
