Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Go on, who's got snow in the UK then?

Anybody in Wiltshire/Somerset? I am due to go to son and DiL's south of Bristol today to do a load of baby sitting - don't want to let them down but not much point adding to the chaos unnecessarily. We have snow tyres and chains but they don't help much in the situations described above. There's some snow where they are, but not a lot.

Anyone hoping British drivers will "learn" from last winter is a bit optimistic. They'll be out there driving too fast and too close on summer tyres, moaning about how a few inches of snow brings the country to a standstill, apparently unaware that in a snowy place they wouldn't even be allowed out on the roads. And wouldn't we moan if our council tax doubled to fund great fleets of snow ploughs to be used once in a blue moon?

It surrounds horrendous oop north. We even have a light dusting here in coastal south-east Hampshire, and some very icy pavements.

Well, much as it pains me to say it, I'm having to admit defeat and I'm not going to try and get in to work today. I think the 2 hours it took to get home from work last night would probably be doubled today, that's if I could even get my car out of the cul de sac which is blocked by 4 or 5 of my neighbour's cars, one of which is a mercedes!

So hoping they will let me take a day's holiday rather than unscheduled leave which is unpaid.

What a crock! I bet the likes of Germany and Scandinavia are laughing at us right now.

Butterfly, ours is a metre long, so hopefully not quite hidden yet. The main road to work is reported as impassable, not to mention my van trouble. I'll go to whichever branch needs a pharmacist as long as the roads are safe and so is my van.

Well, I've been out the back door with a ruler and it's 22cm deep (8.5 inches in old money). I expect it would be deeper than that at work (Sherwood Forest district) as it's higher ground.

So I'm stuck here all day, although I might stick my ski stuff on and go for a nice walk in the snow. Very Happy

We got snow here for the first time yesterday, a bit more overnight - I guess a out 3-4" if I stuch a ruler in it. Very wet yesterday although it snowed all day it was melting a huge amount too, but it did settle and was added to overnight. Much crisper and nicer snowy day here today - pity I'm working as it would have been nice to have walked in it. All local roads are decently clear as gritters went round last night for the first time.

Some Brits too Wink although that's more laughing at the BBC jazzing up and sensationalising the chaos caused by mouses ankle deep snowdrifts in Kent, especially when BBC News the night before had pretty clear weather forecast, and the M2/M20 gritter blokes decide to have a lie in.

OK 22cm I can just about forgive, but my dad used to get to work in an Austin Maxi in snow that deep in Kent, with less issues than modern cars with all their EFI and traction control etc. And we used to live out in the digs too.

-5 today. roads all clear. tram tracks and bus lanes even more clear. snowploughs had already ploughed the pedestrian zone within hours of the snow starting to fall, although I do note they're skimping on the gravel this year.

it' still chucking it down in south london/surrey borders. and i've just seen a squirrel race from one end of the garden to the other in order to get up a tree. awww it was so sweet (but i know it wasn't really cos it was bunny-hopping across the snow - it must've been freezing, poor thing).

i'm off to measure snow levels, get pics and test local conditions in a while. i'm under strict instructions to do a trip report later... wink

The problem in England is the vast amount of road traffic. Commuter routes are horribly congested and subject to big delays if there's a minor crash, even in fine weather. Geneva is having problems too, after all - with incomparably less traffic. Alpine roads are pretty well deserted most of the time, so a few overturned vehicles (and they are not infrequent) don't cause a problem. When roads in the Tarentaise are busy - on winter Saturdays - they regularly clog up for hours, especially if there's a bit of snow falling. They also prohibit all heavy goods traffic on alpine roads on those days. So, if we kept everyone without snow tyres off the roads, and all HGVs, life would be easier here too, provided we also invested untold sums in great fleets of snowploughs, of course.

Germany has taken the wise step of making winter tyres compulsory. And Scandinavians have months of this every winter. I have friends who have worked in Washington DC - regularly grinds to a halt; they have some horrendous ice storms.

Thanks for Wilts/Somerset info. Sounds fine.

I regularly travel to Sweden and last year the whole of Stockholm ground to a halt in the snow. No buses/trams. Trains cancelled: took three hours for the shuttle train from the airport to city to take me half way - and then give up and go back to the airport leaving us to find our own way into the city.

There was uproar in the Swedish press: they believed their reputation as well!

Almost exactly 30cm now on the table outside. Just walked to the shop - no chance of getting the car out and I think it could be a while as we live up a lane that nothing else comes up and it's knee deep all the way. Just to add to the fun, the tall hedge beside the bit nearest the house is weighed down with snow and is covering half the lane's width. Ho hum! Never mind, there is food in the house, coal in the bunker and (touch wood) we still have power. Sad thing is there is nowhere to ski. There is a bit of a slope but with this much powder.... no chance!

Similar in Lincoln with 32cm lying snow in the garden; the walk into work was a delight, with minimal traffic, buses and taxis suspended and people wishing each other good morning..

Drove back from Tignes yesterday - no problem crossing France, despite being -7 and freezing fog.

All changed at that point though. 2 hour delay on shuttle due to a broken down train in the tunnel, snow in Kent, but M20 and M26 were OK. By Godstone, the M25 wasn't too good so thought I'd go Redhill->Reigate->Dorking->Guilford-Woking then join the M3 there (heading for Basingstoke).

Roads in Surrey seemed mainly untreated and snow was settling fast, winter tyres got me to Guildford OK, despite being told by someone to turn around as it wasn't possible to get up a hill. Unfortunately it went very wrong at that point. All the hills leading down into Guildford were at a standstill where people couldn't get up them.

Not being one to give up, I threw on the chains, and cut south, then west on the smallest roads I could find, in the hope most people wouldn't attempt to use them in those conditions. Other than a couple of queue's crossing A roads, it was a plan that worked well. Made it from Guildford to Basingstoke in about 3 hours in the end, which seemed a long time, but having heard of the chaos stories since, I'm thinking I was pretty lucky really.

So the moral is: 2 wheel drive is fine, but everyone should use winter tyres and carry snow chains from November to April wink

It is still snowing here on Teesside - we had a foot in the garden on Saturday - haven't bothered to remeasure it, but it has snowed like billy-oh every day. Tomorrow I'm supposed to get my car serviced - we cannot get out the estate road here, but the garage guy said he'd come and collect the car !!

Less than 1cm of snow anywhere between central london and peterborough but that's enough for east coast trains to cancel (change the timetable if their speak) most the bloody trains all this week. I commute everyday and it's p1ssing me right off. Once again killing time at kings cross. Less than 2 weeks and i'll be skiing far far away from the east coast mainline.
