RobW, the planting could be shrubs, not necessarily trees! You should see that line in summer as well - ouch! They are trying to replant the area as that whole slope is a major grazing zone in summer. The planting of ground covering berry bushes for example would not interfere with the lift but would provide some good extra tasty grazing for the sheep and goats. The ski route goes way round the back before returning to the same side of the mountain and is a long hard slog in places including some very irritating uphill poling sections.
The local ski school, lifties and at the lift company, or if you can't decipher the Pongauer dialect, then ask at the Tourist Office. At the bottom of the Graffenberg the shop opposite the car park will give you excellent up to date info ((Schi-Stadl Rot-Weiß-Rot) as will the guys in Schischule Huber. The better area for off-piste skiing is up the valley towards Kleinarl and the terrain that links over to Flachauwinkel. There is good tree skiing off the back of the Sonntagskogel (so behind Sonntagskogel II) that ends up on the road linking Wagrain and Flachau but you need to have a local show you the way as some of the landowners are not to skier friendly and it helps not to upset them.

Samerberg Sue, Thanks.
We went up to Flachauwinkel today, and spent quite a bit of time skiing the stash and nearby, nothing you'd call serious off piste but sufficiently challenging for the group. Was a great day: very quiet first thing, just about had the sun-bathed mountain to ourselves until late morning.
Last day tomorrow. Will probably head up to Zauchensee again.

No real snow on the horizon till Friday alas
Piste biased carving skis maybe have to be dusted off.

Skied in Zauchensee today, it was truly glorious. The pistes are very hard packed, mostly "kunstschnee" and were very icy in the afternoon when the sun dips over the valley onto the Flachauwinkle side. The World Cup piste(Kalberloch) is closed off due to the race later this week.We are due a drop in temps , back down to -8/-12 with some light snow, which will be very welcome, off piste lots of rocks and trees now scratching through. The resort seemed much quieter this year than previous years.

Sunday we did Zauchensee again. Lots of new snow to freshen up the pistes, it hardly stopped all day. Agree with kooky that it's pretty quiet.
Unfortunately now back home after a mad dash across half of Europe yesterday: left Altenmarkt around 10am, got home at 1.30am. Apart from when we gave up on the autobahn from Salzburg to Munich and took the old road (due to snow/traffic on the autobahn) we cruised comfortably at 120km/77mph (according to TomTom) almost the whole way.

SO... managed to get out for a decent bash yesterday.
Skied from Reiteralm to Hauser Kaibling and back (Ski Amadé).
Pisted are in good shape (especially after the NY demand) and a recent dusting of snow accross the areas has certainly helped the packing of snow on the pistes.
There were some very hard packed/icey areas though (which were a pain in my twinnies... all I got at the moment... long story) which were specifically placed to catch me out! But TBH I was had a great time!
Here is my skiline info for the day : http://www.skiline.cc/skiing_day/124a0llpah3
The new lift that has replaced the tediously long drag linking Haus to Planai is an absolute corker! 8 man heated chair rather than a double T bar... no waiting and comfort!.. there has been a ton of cash spent in the Steirmarkt region this year. New lifts and pistes! The new Pruenegg (sp) lift at Reiteralm is another great 8 man gondola replacing an old T bar.. awesome day!

Off to schladming for the first time in a couple of weeks and trying not to worry about the weather forecasts! Can anyone local shed any light on past experience as to how well things will hold up? Also what is the best site for a reliable local weather forecast? Thanks in advance

I skied the Scheffau and Brixen sections of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser this week. All the lifts and runs were open both days.
Wednesday (5/1) was very cold and icy - a lot of "boilerplate" hard snow, but the base is holding up well. clear skies due to an incoming Föhn storm. The runs down to Ellmau and Scheffau were extremely hard and remained in the shade all day and therefore stayed very hard. It was extremely busy and queing for most of the lifts was the order of the day, but not for very long 5 to 6 minutes we timed on average.
Friday (7/1) was warmer and we were over on the Brixen in Thale side. As we had a beginner with us we did not travel too far. The pistes did softened up during the day but the base was holding up well. Some of the more well used south facing pistes were looking a bit sad as we came down at the end of the day. But as the crowds disappear and it goes cold again next week maybe there will be a wee bit of a top up. Again beautiful clear skies with fantastic views over incredible distance because of the Föhn. We could see that they have started closing off and preparing the Hahnenkahn piste for the race at Kitzbühel on the 22nd. Training starts on the 18th so they need a good solid secure base.

The snow is holding up well in the Tyrol, a top up would be nice but pistes are hard and fast and the weather is beautiful, warming up slightly today.
I went to the Kitzbuhel area yesterday and Hopfgarten today and skied over to Ellmau via Soll, and Brixen. It is 25 yrs since I skied this area, a pleasant change to the mega resorts and very good value, lovely lunch at a hut just off the piste down to Ellmau.
Very busy but not too busy for January though. (via SMS)

Just back from St Johann. Conditions were pretty hard/ icy all week. Pretty soft yesterday though. Not the greatest conditions, but everywhere was skiiable. Southern, exposed slopes were a bit tired yesterday evening.

A little late with this report, last day on the slopes was Friday! Dachstien West was lovely high up although unseasonably warm and a little slushy, the return runs were a touch icy probably due to the man made snow base and right down at resort levels a very small amount of brown snow!
In short they were in need of a top up (which they may of had) but were far from closing any runs. Quiet till the end of the day rush!

Samerberg Sue,
I'll try to only mildly panic, but due to and family commitments, I am strictly a 1 week a year skier and it has to be in January. Off on 22nd to Schladming and the temps look pretty high for a while and heavy rain tomorrow.
I know that whatever happens it will be better than being at work, but you always think if only..... - my main concern is how the snow pack will hold up with only a few days to repair.

Mister T, In terms of piste it will take a good battering, there's a solid base around schladming from the man-made and as Sue says temps set to drop again next week.I hope so anyway as I'm planning a few days in town myself late next week. You'll be out in time for for the night race, I'll probably miss it this year. We're planning a night race party at home in UK, watch it on eurosport with fellow ex-night race spectators and enjoy some schladmingers.

Hi there, I am another one flying into Zell am See on 29th January. The 9 day forecast on One of the websites has the temperature dropping alot by the middle to end of next week. Worse case is we catch the bus over to kaprun if the snow is not great.
