little tiger, I'm trying to send a friend easiski's way; but she insists skiing is not a summer sports ;(
I'm convinced she'd benefit massively from a little Easilove.

Yeah Ronald, some folks are pretty resistant to the idea of summer skiing....
I don't get it - cheaper... Nice way to have a holiday in mountains and get some ski training in...
It is so nice there in summer.

Easiski, Bit off-topic but i'm heading to L2A in July with missus and couple of friends to sample some of that summer snow you have stashed away there . Planning on renting a snowboard while there and quite fancy getting a couple of half-days of lessons in the park. Anyone you'd care to give a tip 'o' the hat to for board rentals and/or board lessons during the summer?

Jutta at Sport Extreme (I think) is easiski's top rental lady and lungostyle seems a very popular snowboard & ski freestyle instructor.

Me and the Ms are 2nd session folks. I was wondering how prevalent helmets are at LDA, or in Europe generally. I live in Maine, on the US east coast. The use of helmets, to my eye, is greater here than at Vail or Utah where I have spent some time. I wear one. Saved my life two years ago when another skier took me out from behind and I hit my head on a solid ice covered slope at Jay Peak in Vermont. Lost consciousness but have suffered no ill effects since. Without a helmet, the story would have ended quite badly. By the way, the woman who did the honors was a lovely lady from England. Charming but deadly. She told me that she pulled up to ski behind me because I was "such a lovely skier." Perhaps she annihilated me for the same reason. Is this a British thing?

deliberate1, Helmet use in Europe is getting more common all the time. I always wear one at Les Deux Alpes and elsewhere. You won't look out of place and anyway does that really matter at least you'll be better protected.

Holidayloverxxx, while I appreciate your caution, please understand that it was certainly not my intent to start the kind debate that seems to well up on the Epic ski forum (my usual haunt) whenever someone has the temerity to even mention the "H" word. I did not inquire as to the European view regarding the "efficacy and advisability of wearing a helmet," as you say. Frankly, I have already made up my mind on the matter and have moved on to subjects of greater interest to me. I simply asked "how prevalent" the use of helmets is on the other side of The Pond. And my thanks to Colin for your response. By the way, Colin, the the "look" of a helmet is of little consequence to me. When people see me, their attention is generally drawn to the rather prominant hairly thingy under my nose, not to my brain bucket.

Colin, appreciate your kind words and enthusiam for the experience. Really looking forward to it. Will be the first time my wife and I have travelled together to the Continent. Even if the skiing is marginal, there is always wine in which to drown one's sorrows. And if the snow is exceptional, there is always wine to fuel ones exuberance.
By the way, he "freeze up" is certainly an issue in winter, and particularly in blowing snow- we're talking ice stalagtites 4" long. Sorry, is that too distressing an image?

Holidayloverxxx, please, please, no apology expected or necessary. Just know that as a vetern of the "Helmet Wars" on Epic, I would never presume to open a new front in the European theatre. Truly, you sound quite charming (unlike my last encounter with a charming British woman). Indeed, I am already imagining the turns we will make together - helmet by helmet. It is a pastoral scene, admittedly, though, somewhat wine infused.

We're just packing, actually. A bit late, because we were due to take the cat down to Brighton to live with son whilst we're away, and she did the usual cat thing, realised something was up and disappeared for hours. Damn thing. Then a few days acclimatising to the altitude, listening to the cowbells and wandering knee deep through flowery pastures, then off to LDA a week tomorrow.

Pam, indeed I have. And I have followed the no-booze rule with good results. I live at sea level. That is, my windows get sea spray. Ms D1 and I went out to Colorado for the first time in February. We were a bit worried about the conserable change in altitude what with Vail topping off at around 3000m +/-. Frankly, the worst of the acclimating was over within hours of arriving in Denver (1700m +/-). Lightheaded and winded. Felt a bit played the first day on the hill with some leg fatigue and minor loss of stamina. But another fellow we were with was really hurting for a few days. And I went up the chair with a fellow whose buddy was discovered running around the parking lot in his skivies like a mad man. They airlifted him down. We did not drink for a couple days and avoided coffee as well. Truth be told, a drink in Vail is about $10, plus. What with $95 lift tickets, it was rather easy to pass on refreshments.
Pam, I read rather extensively about altitude sickness before that trip and can confirm that there seems to be little rhyme or reason to those who are afflicted and those not. It is not a matter of conditioning but fundamental physiology. Me and Ms D1 were among the lucky. I climbed the Matterhorn quite some time ago and did not suffer any ill effects except for the exhaustion of being pushed by a cigarette smoking Swiss mountain goat of a guide who peed on the Italian side of the summit.
Is this something you are worried or just curious about? There are (as usual) drugs for altitude sickness (Acetazolamide).

deliberate1, we have sea spray on our windows at home, too! But our apartment in France is at 1550m and we're there for a week, so won't be going from sea level straight to L2A. .
We've skied at L2A before, and on the Tignes glacier, and also walked at quite high altitude on Mt Kenya. I am not much affected by altitude, but my OH is worse, though not too bad. But we'd not come across the alcohol thing before - so will try to be careful about that. We don't drink to excess (well, we don't think so ) but we'll lay off before we ski, this time, to make sure we can get the best value from our time on the snow.

Yikes,,, 3 days of wrapping things up here, then it's on the plane and heading for camp. Love the interaction going on here, it's going to be a fun group. And living in Colorado, I'm already altitude aclimated, so beer is not off limits! For those who are coming from the flatlands, Easiski and I will break you in gradually.
Charging up the batteries on video camera. We'll be doing before and after shooting, along with video analysis all through the camp. With all the balance and edging drills we have in store for you (along with angulation, flexion/extension, rotation, transitions),,, I'm expecting we'll see some significant improvements by the end of the week. I'm anticipating a great camp. Productive and FUN! A super week of learning on skis, and summer in the Alps, all wrapped into one trip. Can't wait. See you guys soon!
