I can think of much better adjectives than that!!
How did your trip back go?... Still the same here - been cold over night the last few nights (-15 minimum), could do with a new dusting (rather than as localised as last time which seemed to dump about 8 cm only on my driveway!)
Off to Russbach today to meet some brits....

The Streif run doesn't open until after the Hahnenkamm race. We've been there for the week running up to the race weekend and there was a great atmosphere in town

RichardB, You'll get the idea then, with 50,000+ in town it is quite the party
I was last there 2 years ago when the speed races were cancelled due to lack of snow and they held 2 slaloms instead during a 48 hour blizzard
We're in Zell am See for 2 weeks from 16th so we are going to see the Super G. If you are wanting to actually see a race live that is the best bet as it is much less busy on the Friday, the tickets are also cheaper.

So... hows Kitz? And why isn't the Streif run open yet? |
I skied Kitz and the Kitzbühel Ski Safari on Christmas Day. Of the Streif only the Start and the Steilhang (of the challenging bits) were open. I presumed that all the other sections, Mausefalle, Alte Schneise, etc., were closed to keep people off them until after the race at the end of January.

Okay how about more specifically... hows the snow conditions and off piste doing? I want to shred some pow over there in a month (when I'll be there)!
And BTW, the off piste at Kitz I believe is less avy prone than other resorts, true?

The pistes are fine, though hard. There hasn't been that much snow around here yet (compared to other places in the Alps). But hopefully we'll get it next time round.
I don't think you can make any general statements about "less avy prone". The Kitzbüheler Alps aren't as high or, in general, as wild as some other areas. But slopes there can avalanche as much as anywhere else, depending on the slope and the snow conditions.

Fine pictures, Markus - thanks.
I was in St. Johann in Tirol today. The pistes were generally very hard, tending to icy. Off-piste was also hard, lumpy and rutty. There was about a quarter of an hour wait for the first gondola up in St. Johann but after that no great queues.
There was to be a FIS Skiercross race in the evening (I didn't stay for it), on the piste which goes down to Bauerpenzing (7A). On this piste they have felled a number of trees where previously there was a zig-zag track near the bottom. Now there is a steeper, direct drop. I wonder whether they are thinking of resurrecting it as a FIS Giant Slalom course again.

On Tues 6th Jan I skied with friends around the east end of the Hohe Salve range, Ellmau, Going, Scheffau. We found the best snow mostly in Going, maybe because it is less frequented. But mostly the pistes were hard to icy. Pretty dull most of the day, with flat light.

To all the Ski Amadé fans. They announced to build a new lift to connect Flachau and Wagrain by the season of 2010/11. A new gondola is built between the middle stations of both mountains.

I'm booked to hit Soll again in February, had a lot of fun several years ago hitting the Ski Welt area and getting quite far. Any "eyewitness" reports of the snow on the Soll side?
This is my first time back since an ASL snap playing football 2.5 years ago so I'm worried about excessive ice.

kerekip, OK, so I would then be able to ski from Zauchensee to Alpendorf with lift links all the way - that would be excellent ! Then if they could find a way to get a run down from Kemahdhohe to Zauchensee, they could extend to Radstadt in the other direction...! ousekjarr, that would be cool, but is it possible to get from Flachauwinkel to Flachau itself without the bus??

Posted quickly before, but meant to say, in thinking about it, would it be possible for a strategically placed lift to link Hirschkogel (Alpendorf end) with Grossarl and the Gasteins??
I can't remember the lay of the land at Grossarltal as to whether it would be feasible or not, but distance-wise it can't be far.
Dorfgastein is a bit of a distance from Hofgastein though so probably not lift-linkable...would be awesome though, I am envisaging skiing from Radstadt to Bad Gastein, wonder how far it would be?
A very unrealistic D

The pistes on the Hohe Salve are presently hard, tending to icy in places. Hard enough to damage my knee last Tuesday. However, I assume that by February we will have had some new snow, so there's no saying what they will be like then.

The original ORF (Austrian Television) report is available online, though only till Sat 10.1 (I think) and needs some contortions to run. It's in German, of course, but does give brief glimpses of maps, etc.
I reached it as follows:
1) Follow this link http://salzburg.orf.at/magazin/studio/streaming/stories/42056/
2) On that page click Salzburg heute im Internet
3) A page 'Woche 02, 2009' appears (as long as it is still available). Click 'Sonntag, 04.01.2009'
4) A page 'Sonntag 04.01.2009' appears. Click 'Video in Fernsehqualität'. If need be, select a program to play the clip, e.g. Windows Media Player.
The clip should start running. It begins with some advertising, partly ski related, and then the news program comes, 'Salzburg heute'. The report about the Wagrain lift starts about 3 min 19 sec into the clip.
If anyone gets this to work, they deserve a prize
