shorty,
If you make it over to La Thuile in Italy I would highly recommend Le Rascard for lunch.
Le Petit Danoire for Apres as well as McKinnleys
Twinners for ski hire. Very friendly service.
Enjoy

shorty, another vote for Le Rascard - the pizzas looked very good but can personally recommend the lasagne - best I've ever had!
Also Le Petit Danois in La Ros do an awesome pizza...
You must also try the tartiflette in the Traversette restaurant at the bottom of the Fort chair. Fabulous!
Runs you must do: 6 (La Nouva) & 7 (San Bernando) in La Thuile, Marmottes in La Ros. Even if you don't cross to Italy, take in the view across from the top of the Fort chair - stunning!

Going back to La Ros next year?
Not sure about your taste in pizza. Petit Danois' pizza not a patch on McKinleys.

shorty, if you get good snow la ros is great for a mixed group. We've been three times at Feb half-term.
a few food tips.
La Rosiere: L'Ancolie superb. Rustic. Friendly staff. Excellent French cuisine. Essential to book (ideally before leaving UK!) if going on Thursday night. Good for lunch as well. Coped with our kids last year (they made snow castles outside between courses), but you would be better leaving young kids behind at night. Located in Les Eucherts, but they have their own taxi & if you book they will arrange pick up and return in evening. However make sure you ask in advance to book their taxi (Fr: navette) otherwise you might find yourself walking home!
McKinleys for lunch (no contest although plenty of other great places).
La Thuille: le Rascard great. 40 different pizzas. Pasta with wild boar sauce awesome. Try the house red. Might be tricky to find but there is a map on back of piste map. Alternatively, dive left off 4 La Tour about 100 meters before Edelweiss drag. Small piste/path apparently through someone's back garden to road. 20 metres up road on right.
Roxi bar (next to Fourclaz chair) for coffee: good music too.
Ski-hire. Queues in Evolution 2 horrendous on Sundays (although at least we got to watch the whole of the first half of Wales-France). Our friends had not prebooked & went to one of the others (?Sport 2000) and had much better service (cheaper too).
Could go on but probably getting boring!
Enjoy!

Cheap tip: Piccollo San Bernado bar (the one nearest the PSB) chairlift for fabulous and cheap panini. The most expensive is €4 |
Also does the best hot chocolate on the mountain - your spoon stands up in it!

Blueyedgirl,
Just came back from the Planibel. We hired from Only Ski. They were very good. If you look them up on their website it says there is a 10% discount if you mention the website - so mention it! They were very efficient and had lots of staff. There is another hire shop too. They are both only moments walk from the Planibel.
The Planibel is good. If you want to use the pool bring your own towels or they charge (I think 3 euros a day). They have hotel facilities and apartments. If you are in the hotel it is free to use, if the apartments there is a charge. Our group of children (there were 12 children in our group) found the water in the main pool really cold and didn't use it after the first time. You are not allowed to jump or dive into the pool either which the children found a bit frustrating. They were too busy enjoying sledging and running around in the hotel. There is a ringo run which is not expensive and they enjoyed that too.
My older daughter is 12. I would suggest contacting the ski school before you arrive. For the first time ever in a ski resort were told they had no spaces left for lessons. They had 63 teachers and all were fully booked and they weren't interested in helping us salvage what could have been a massive problem with a load of children and some adults who needed lessons. Fortunately a few of us discovered a fire in a restaurant in the Planibel and put it out on the first night ( dramatic start to the holiday). We used that as bargaining pressure with the hotel to intercede on our behalf and persuade the school to do something to help us. The school got another instructor in and our group managed to get lessons but they were not very good I believe with completely different abilities of skiers in eth groups which is no fun for anyone. One day there were 14 in my older daughters group which is too many in my book. It was an Italian holiday week as well as UK half-term so hopefully you will not have the same problem.
I suggest you email them well in advance and let them know what you are after. Someone in my wife's group said he paid a deposit of 40 euros before arriving via the website and had no problem getting his lessons. I would hope that ours was a bad experience due to higher than normal numbers in the resort. Even with it being busier than normal there was loads of skiing in the resort and there was very little skiing.
I was not very taken with La Rosiere but did not fully explore it. I was put off by some uninteresting runs which made it necessary for me to take three drag lifts back to La Thuile which took ages. I am sure there must be better ways but I didn't have enough time to explore it as I had to be back to meet the rest of the family each day after their lessons. There are some runs in La Thuile which go a bit flat and can require walking which is a pain if you don't get enough speed up on the downhill before the uphill. I thought it was a great resort and would be happy to go there again. I have seen some people recommend run 7 on this website and others criticise it - personally I found it really boring with quite a bit of walking. Apparently it is 11km long. Some of the newer skiers in our group liked it because it is a long ski giving a sense of satisfaction without having to get on and off lifts. It depends what level you are I guess. I'm no expert but I hated it! Anyway I have rambled enough. There are a couple who p[lay music in the bar every night - they are quite boring after a night or two (and that’s being generous). The bar shuts at 12 and they kick you pout sharpish. The rooms were very good and the food if fine if unexciting.
Hope you have as good a time as we did!

aidancostello, Re Run 7. Yes there are a fair few bits where you have to take a great lump of speed into an area to avoid polling and i also found (apart from a couple of bits) it to be one of the dullest runs in town. Thge worst bit is that you can see the town and it never gets any closer. You just trundle on and on and on and on..........
Did you try the descent from the top into la Thuile from the far side of the mountain: Run 6 Nuova - absolute opposite and great fun.
PS you can do the trip back from la Ros using just 1 drag. In 3 visits I have never used more than the 1 drag. Don't like drags
We booked the last lesson with Evolution2 in la Rosiere the week before we went away. ESF had some spaces and friends used them and were very impressed.

Never had to pole on Run7 - nice new shiney skis may have helped, but yes it is boring (however has the easiest access to le Rascard restaurant). Run 6 is much more fun!

aidancostello, I'm an advocate of run 7, but it is fair to say that scenery is as much a part of my holiday enjoyment as negotiating a descent. As a counterpoint to the steep stuff, I think it's rather enjoyable.
When you go back, be sure to try the boarder cross which is not far from the Fort, and (check with the lifties) get down to Marmottes (bas) and Fontaine Froide.

No, they just peered disdainfully down at me over the skidoo windscreens. They didn't say anything but I could read their thought bubbles which said "Oh dear, another English 'expert' skier".

Hi All, have been following this thread with great interest (and finally decided to contribute!). I'm off to La Ros in March for my third trip there and can't wait. I love it, great little resort! My question is Frosty the Snowman, how do you get to La Thuile using only one drag? Would make my day to know that - I hate drags too - and have only found one way over, which uses two of the darn things.
P.S. Not very experienced at posting things, so apologies if the quotes/layout haven't come out right.. I won't know until I post this.. and then its all too late!

Charli939, Come off the Bellcombe 1 drag lift and ski left (not right) and follow the signs for Fourclaz. It is a straight ski and crosses about 3 pistes. Catch Fourclaz up and hey presto you are at the top looking down into La Thuile. Even Better is to head for the Piccollo San Bernado lift from the drag, catch the lift up and then ski down to Fourclaz.
If you are not pleased with your post then use the scissor button on the right hand edge of your post. Personally I think it looks fine, so get posting again

Thanks Frosty - I was sure there was a way to avoid those drags but after doing it twice my friends were not prepared to try it again. If I go back to La Thuile I will take a print out of your instructions. I heard there was some great skiing over there but we were obviously in the wrong parts. I used Fourclaz quite a bit.
Agreed that run 6 is a great one down to the village. Can't remember which black it was (2 or 30 but there is a mighty steep bit which is challenging but fun.
Blueyedgirl, If you want a private lesson suggest you look up a website for a company called bluski. there is a really helpful guy called Mark who could help you out with lessons with English instructors if you fancy a change from the Italian ski school. I heard the lessons with Evolution 2 were good Frosty but was reluctant to book with them in case the crossing to France would be closed due to high winds etc in which case we wouldn't get there!.
Are you going independently Blueeyedgirl? If there are a group of you I can recommend a fantastic company from transfers from the Milan airports. Got an email when I got back asking for my feedback and telling me that one of the children had left a Nintendo DS game on the coach and they wanted to send it back to us. A great improvement on our coach driver the previous year who spent the whole journey either texting or speaking on his mobile.
