The Swiss Met Service is still showing it far colder this time next week.
If that pans out, surely snowmaking can commence.

last year Val Thorens was snow making in October. I think you are right, they'll probably try from around about the middle of next week when they may start to get a bit of natural snow in the mix. That gives them 10 days to geta few pistes open.
Least snowy start to autumn since 2006 in the French alps, apparently. The col du Galibier closed two weeks later than last year but there is no snow on the col and you could cycle across it (with care, could be icy on the north side).

Both the Swiss and French met services, for example, are currently forecasting a marked dip in temperatures from next Tuesday or Wednesday with light snow. Val Thorens set to be very cold there on in. Ideal for snowmaking.
Zero iso in Switzerland well above 4000m, setting Nov records.
Western Europe will be (much) colder from next week
Modest snowfall incoming above 1000-2000m.
For example, Val Thorens may get 5-15cm at resort level of 2300m.

Saudi Arabia desert yesterday got its first ever snowfall in known history.
Some say it has more snow than France

Hello - I'm planning to bring my family to Grindewald from December 8-14th. Is there typically good skiing in the Junfrau region at this time and how are things looking so far for this year?
Thanks
You know it makes sense.

@djlippert, The thread below is more suitable for this question , this thread is really more about the overview of future weather trends in the various alpine areas where skiing takes place .
The good news is that there are signs that the anticyclonic dry period that has gripped the alps for some time is due to change next week .
More good news please.. I’m heading out early this year

As a newly trained amateur meteorologist, the 2 week forecasts are now showing a high chance of snow across the northern alps from the 12th onwards. Not huge quantities forecast and of course wildly subjective but snow falling and - temps is significantly better than 14 degrees and clear skies

Good o.. I’m getting panicked I have reluctantly agreed to a Xmas trip this year, against my better judgement! I’m hoping it will be ok .

Me too, but on the 14th of December! It was the latest I could get away with this year as Mrs FWNS is with child.
Obviously depends where you’re going, but the 3Vs is currently suggesting 10 days of on and off snow starting Tuesday.
Keep the faith
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Christmas is definitely not early, mate. Where are you going?
Folks here do ValTho and Tignes in the first week of December, year after year.
Keep your faith and do your situps, winter is coming
As I clicked on this thread (Christmas trip......) I told myself that it was throwing chicken entrails. But I still clicked.

I have no rational reason to keep checking this thread...but I still do.
there is currently no snow...and checking this thread is not going to make it snow, I know that...but still...maybe tomorrow?

Val Thorens fired up the snow canons today, unfortunately the stuff they made largely melted. Probably just a test to make sure the pipes are okay.

I’m taking some optimism from the online alps snow reports specifically stating the North Western alps getting some real cold temps and snow in the coming weeks. Going to Megève on Boxing Day (very risky I know).

Charts starting to throw out some interesting possibilities at last.
Note the high heights and pressure (oranges and reds) across Europe but also the development of a wee high over the Arctic starting to put pressure on the 2 Polar Vortex lobes (purples).
This leads to the following in 7 days time -
So heights (blocking high) moved NW to S Greenland and vortex lobe move to Siberia/Scandi opening the door for a cold flow in NW Europe.
Just for Fun the at 10 days out would be quite snowy.
GFS only came on board with this evolution today so spaghetti plots not been looking so good but looking better today. For Les Arc 3V ish. Control (Blue line) is a cracker for cold.

Thats funny to view the thread - we sure are a jumpy lot - I guess thats because everyone is so excited - and isn't that a nice way to be?
Is Polo around? - he has a ton of knowledge reading the charts and pouring over everything - love reading his views and interpretations of the various forecasts.

Just for balance the UKMO model not as positive as the others by 7 days, high not far enough west. Need this model to move to give more confidence in the outcome.

Can see any others charts with the same. Not found the model myself yet.
Last time we had something like this in November was 2010 in Scotland anyway. Things got very nippy.

Winter on its way. First snow Monday night and 2nd half of Nov could be quite tasty

Hoping so @BobinCH - I'm exhausted after 4 or 5 weeks of continuous snow dances, ahead of my trip to Tignes at the end of November

Was that around 30/11/10? It got very cold even here, followed by tons of snow at the very beginning of December.
2010 was biblical in Northumberland, I dream of seeing that again… I’d ski to work
Doubt that’ll come off. I’ll be happy (or at least less twitchy) once the Alps have a good covering

I think it started about the 10th November though not certain and was consistently very cold till just before Christmas.

It was an epic winter for snow at the English North Pennines ski areas. IIRC, snow lay from December/January until March.

We had three very snowy winters in a row, in spells. More snow than I saw as a kid in the barren 70’s (other than 78/79.
We has snowstorms on top of already lying snow, consistently freezing day and night, very unusual for the South Downs.

We (some guys I worked with who were total beginners) were skiing at various locations every weekend starting with Allenheads, moving on to Harwood then Weardale and Yadd Moss all the way from mid December until end of March. I remember clearly going past Yadd Moss in a high top Transit van around New Year and the snow where the plough/ blower had gone through on the North side of the road at least was higher than the van.
