We have been using such a "non Austrian" taxi company for many years, and they were excellent. Our driver was Turkish, and he told us about his kids in Innsbruck. Obviously he did not drive as a maniac.
In fact our worst experience was with a "real" Tyrolean company from Innsbruck, that came way too early because of a little snowfall, actually want to cancel because of that, and drove like a maniac....
He was the owner, and was calling with his girlfriend all the time during that drive. Sounded like he had a dinner date with her, and he was speeding to get on time. A very very unpleasant end of our holiday.

April 22 I had to take a taxi from Hochgurgl to Soelden to collect something from the pharmacy for my daughter. The driver was a complete loon, a Sebastien Loeb in his mind as he raced to each hairpin. I never did find out his nationality, I just wanted him to concentrate.

Really dumb question. Do you know where we can get a cheap sofa? The pics we saw from the owners didn't show one and we're too embarrassed to ask if there is one included (we've already paid so I guess we will see).
It seems like there is an ikea an hour away, but is there something closer, or do you have any clever ideas how to get a cheap one somewhere?

I have another incredibly stupid question.... We have a car parking space, how possible do you think it'd be to buy a very poo-poo/old van type car (that I could either resell end of season, or simply just dump somewhere) that I could use (and who knows potentially sleep in if I do a 2 hour drive to Mayrhofen for example)? It would probably be a good thing to buy one in Europe where it is left hand drive making that experience a tad easier at tolls etc!

I notice there is a ski demo the first couple weekends. Does anyone know what brands tend to be offered there? I assumed this wouldn't be the case, but another forum mentioned they tested out every type of stockli ski whilst at st Anton. By any chance would this be true or am I being lied to, I would love to buy a pair of stockli skis but have wanted to 'try before you buy' for obvious reasons at that price.

@Thew2002, Jennewein - probably the best of the sports shops, rent out & sell a lot of Stöckli skis. They have a "test" centre at Galzig inside the restaurant / lift building, I would assume you can try most of them there. I discovered Montero AX a little while ago (hired from Jennewein) and have stuck to them ever since, a brilliant ski. Would need a second mortgage to buy a pair though!

@Thew2002, Go on the stockli website and use their ski finder tool. Jennewein and all the ski shops carry stockli, of course you can rent them to try and if you buy they'll knock the price off. There are some demo days and events during the season have a look on the tourist offfice website as they are usually listed there. If you nip over the boarder to Switzerland they can be bought a bit cheaper but don't get caught on the way back !
Stockli makes a limosine of a ski with a price to match, comfortable, stable, smooth, quiet and dare i say maybe just a little bit boring if you like something a bit more twitchy.

Why are they cheaper in Switzerland? I know they're a swiss brand but didn't think it'd impact the price.
I have kendos at the moment, but the reviews of the stocklis in general are tempting...

Little tax free place called Samnaun behind Ischgl, but they do have border tax police, even on the mountain.

@Thew2002, have you checked the skimap? It will be a very looong and rather uncomfortable walk.
You can leave your own skis and ski boots at the restaurant next to the top station of Viderjochbahn2 and hike to the gondola that downloads to Samnaun.
But when you'll return with your new skis on, you'll need to ski with the old ones in hand/attached to your backpack till Idalp so you can download back to Ischgl.
Check the prices to see if the juice is really worth the squeeze.

probably they will nof find it out. I have no idea how they choose the one they will check.
Maybe if you have a backpack???
Maybe they have people round the village who check out who comes with ski boots out of the shops? no idea...

Isn't there some weird rule that you can reclaim the VAT on presents from abroad when you journey home, or is that a myth? I've never tried in truth

@Thew2002, Yes many countries (not the UK) let visitors reclaim VAT on goods they purchase and then export ie take with them. Catch is that those same goods are likely to be subject to customs duty & VAT on importing to another country. The chances of any customs bod spotting that you have just bought some cheap skis in Samnaun is low (though maybe not on the road back to Austria at Spiss) but not sure the amount you would potentially save would be worth the effort & cost of getting to Samnaun or anywhere else.
I keep looking at a set of Stöckli skis and it just doesnt make sense for me to buy a pair. At least €1,200 (probably more) and then paying to wax them etc for 10 to 12 days a year its cheaper to hire, for a season its a different thing. Plus lugging them back & forth on the train is a pain.

I'm not sure if the border patrol is more concerned about someone like us who bought a pair of skis for personal use, or someone who bought five Rolex watches to sell later and make a profit.

Lech and heli-skiing: is being taled abou again
i make no secret i am totally against Heli Skiing and Private transport especially in Europe....
Helicopters should be used for Accident,Emergency's and Civil aid only!!!
- Mehlsack and Schneetäli are the last remaining exceptions for heli-skiing in Austria
- Permit has expired
- Heli-skiing must be reapplied for after 2.5 years
- The Green State Councillor for the Environment warns, Governor Wallner (ÖVP) is responsible
- In 2022, Wallner granted the permit after a long discussion.
- But only for 2.5 years instead of 5
- The permit was also granted under the premise that the Lech Tourist Board should develop a concept of how heli-skiing is compatible with sustainability in tourism
- It was also allegedly agreed that 2022 would be the last permit
- New discussions are likely to take place because the company "Wucher" wants to apply for a permit again
- The issue is still present in Lech, tourism chief Fercher explains that they are still working on the required concept

@stanton, I would be pretty sure that some reason will be found to grant an "exception" again. Lech has the strongest ÖVP vote in Austria which could just have an influence. I agree that heli skiing is not needed in the Austrian mountains, abundant terrain can be accessed with lifts or small effort, its not like Canada.

I'm not a fan of heliskiing either. But the comment about the ÖVP in Lech is useless.
Virtually all ski resorts are dominated by ÖVP, and Lech -ùnlike other skiresorts- voted for Austrian President Van der Bellen with great majority. And he is....from the Green Party.

@Thew2002, They will get the cannons on as soon as it gets cold enough and they are allowed to operate, environmental concerns dictate a start and end date for cannons though some resorts break this and pay the fines. I would argue that this 'verdammt kannone schnee' is kind of getting a bit over the top and know a few people who injured themselves due to it, but that's a topic in itself.
The goats enjoy seeing the helicopters more than those annoying tourers (there is a great documentary on you tube - arlberg hidden paradise - think that's the one that shows that the goats don't like tourers, or a similar one in the series), in fact not so long ago there was a season with very few natural full depth avalanches, this meant the goats had no winter grass and roots to nibble on, so the hunters arranged for helicopter deliveroo and some food was flown up and dropped around the mountains for them. The goats don't forget.
