I think it all closes the 6th of April...At least that what is says on the various resort websites..
I have no idea what their policy is of extending that though if conditions allow. Livigno is open officially until May 1, all be it, less exciting than the Dolomites.

Is there such. Thing as too much snow, looking at the webcams yes. Everything is shut around Arabba. I usually have a week around now, but had to give it a miss this year, kind of glad I did now.
Out in 6 weeks for 11 days in Arabba, I think we should be OK for conditions by then, just hope it doesn't warm up and start to rain.

So it looks like the road to Selva is open, but none of the lifts are running? At the airport, waiting to start the long journey to Milan. Thinking I should maybe toss around the idea of somewhere else beside the Dolomites for riding...planning on riding starting Monday. Thoughts?

I asked my friend at the Ski School this morning about this and she said all the roads in and out of the village were closed and the lifts were closed, so I guess you can have too much in one go aside from the 'normal' avalanche risk

Looks like Arabba took the brunt of the snowfall that came in from the Southeast quadrant with reports of 120cm fallen over Thurs/Fri and appears to be completely closed today with maximum avalanche risk of grade 5 red. Selva is reporting up to 105cm, but appears to have the situation under control.
Val Gardena (Selva), Val Di Fassa (Canazei) and Alta Badia (Corvara) look to be almost fully operational today with only a few lifts closed, just some of the top cablecars, links across to Arabba, the Alba area and the odd draglift closed.
http://www.valgardena.it/en/ski-snowboard/slopes-lifts/open-lifts/
Go there!! If you're snowboarding you won't get as good conditions as this in the Dolomites for many years. Arabba should open up in the next day or so once the snow starts to be consolidated and secured, but there's plenty to be playing with even now.

Dolomia Ski Tour were up at Rifugio Scoiattoli Wednesday night, and they are still there. They can't leave... snowed in and isolate.
There are some pictures of this on their Facebook page, if you want to FB it.
Made for Hollywood version will be released October 2014.

Sun out in Selva Val Gardena this morning, there'll be some great riding across the area in the next few days with the majority of lifts anticipated to open.
Arabba still looks gloomy, if they can secure some areas after the jumbo snowfall which is now reported as 200cm in total, maybe something will open today.
All across Belluno province they are struggling to clear overloaded roofs, restore power and reach cut-off communities. The Military with their ATVs, Mountain Rescue teams and Fire crews from Milan have been called in to help. Some areas have reported an unprecedented total snowfall of 300cm in recent days.

Looks like its been snowing again across the Dolomites overnight with snow at village level. And looks like more forecast for this week as well though obviously not as much as Thu/Fri just gone.

This is the Capanna Bill chair, it's the way back to Arabba from Malga Ciapela and the Marmolada. It climbs up the south-facing slope up to Passo Padon and Rifugio Padon which has an outdoor terrace with views of the mighty Marmolada.

I remember them detonating charges on this piste once when I was there.
Keep safe guys!

luigi, Am I correct in thinking this is the only way back from the Marmolada tour to Arabba, so even if they could manage to make the route safe from above (with blasting, presumably), then the whole of the Marmolada will still be out of action?

scarlet - it is the only way back on skis....
reports are that two pylons are down so unlikely to be reopened this season.
There are other ways of accessing the Glacier - but long winded...

Quite a long way by road, and that's the one blocked by avalanche, and why most snowheads aren't in the right place.

Hello all. Just back from Arabba. Ridiculous heavy snowfall since Thursday. We were using the Burz lift on Thursday late pm. By Friday morning when the resort was closed the snow level was at the top of the entry gates! The pass to Corvara was opened for about 20 mins on Saturday pm and Colletts got us out in that short window (cheers guys!). The snow looked pretty wet in Corvara but temps were dropping again.
We eventually made Venice on Sunday pm and flew home last night.
We were lucky. I feel for the folk heading out there, at least we got 5 days in.

Report from our friends on Alpinforum on Col Raiser/ Secceda today. Piste apparently in perfect shape, just a bit slushy at the bottom. Good to hear as I was fearing it would be setting concrete for my forthcoming visit

In summary, selva, corvara, Alta badi, etc. Accessed from Innsbruck side Mostly fine. Bit slushy low down. Arraba, marmolada is snowmageddon. 3m+ on piste, in town, on roofs, etc. They were digging out lifts today, so being optimistic. Avy level 5 on roads, and we've seen snow collapsing onto roads.
Still snowing!

Heading out this weekend and starting to get concerned about road access from Venice side. Roads from arraba side currently closed. Snow forecast each day with rain in the vallies. Fantasy island but another 50cms showing on the models for Tuesday and Wednesday. Could do without that!

for Arabba? Yes, if you come in from Brunico, over the spasmodically passable but officially closed Campolongo pass (a bit of a long-winded way round). But no other way in at the moment AFAIK.
|
|
|
|
|

pam w, as you say a long way round. I was reading on the other thread that there have been the occasional police escorts for convoys over the Campolongo (?) pass I'm struggling to see how that would help if the reason for closure is avalanche danger - the convoy would get buried just the same.
