Friday morning saw another 6" of fresh snow down into the valley. By mid afternoon the sun had broken through and so there were patches of unskied knee deep powder to be had from the Herse, but be careful of rocks just under the surface. This morning its windy down in the valley, and cold, we'll see what the day brings. Last day today.

Well that's it for this trip. The wind was not pleasant in the morning but we got out of it by skiing above Vallorcine, finding lots of soft snow above the Foret Verte on La Balm, although its been worked hard over the last couple of days. 2 of our group had a sweaty walk out after following the gondola line down to Vallorcine, running out of skiable snow with 200m descent left. Bieres serieux were earned the hard way, and they steamed like a pack of forwards over lunch outside Le Café Comptoire! Its been a fun return after 16 years away. There is broken high cloud looking out of the window now, and snow in the next day or so looks unlikely. Have a good ski if you are heading out for the coming week.

It's been two powder days on the trot here in Chamonix. Headed to Courmayeur today, where there was still lots of lines to be had. No sunshine but we didn't get the wind they had in Chamonix. Another great days skiing.

We went to Courmayeur too and had a great day. I can't believe it was so windy in Chamonix this morning and not a breath of wind in Courmayeur!

Skied Cham Wed to Fri (GM and Brev). Still soft stuff to be had off piste (lift-served) but you have to have eyeballs on stalks because it's very sharky. The pistes are in good nick, if a little icy lower down.
Skied Combloux yesterday, which was fun. Pretty little ski area with wide, winding pistes and plenty of tree skiing, though we stayed out of the trees because the coverage was poor. When the coverage is good, it will be my go-to area for tree skiing, that's for sure!
Heading back to GM today, though what conditions will be like after a day of the foehn is anybody's guess.

Les Houches,
Nice pistes, no people, soft snow, good coverage

Idris, I do enjoy Les Houches but I don't know what it is about that area, I always get lost!
GM not bad today, though the light remained flat the entire day, especially on the Italian and Canadian bowls side (that was also bloody windy). The light was better on the meadows and forest side, so that's where I played, where there was enough soft snow to keep me happy.
Did the home run around 2pm, so the icy bits at the bottom had had time to get nice and slushy. Yummy.

Le Tour was good, indeed the pistes were as good as it gets. The second photo shows some lines to be had but not too many, and the 3/5 avi flag. The off piste was very mixed, depending on altitude and aspect, from hard and crusty on the southern slopes to stiff powder high and north facing. The top photo is tomorrow's weather on the way in

Yes Jonathan Bell, I knew about the effect but I had no idea it was so dramatic and hadn't really considered it when we woke up and saw the conditions. Trees were bending in the wind where we were and Meteo France suggested 20km/h winds at 2000m going up to 80km/h winds at 4000m. It was actually windier than 20km/h at valley level imo and we thought we were in for a miserable day.
We headed over to Courmayeur and there was no wind at all. We had a fantastic day (if a short one due to our lack of enthusiasm for getting out). There was a quite a bit more snow over there and great conditions. The Freeride World Tour was in town and seeing a few of those guys taking some lines down from Cresta D'Arp towards the Youla Cable Car at ridiculous speeds was very impressive - well worth a watch when they are in Cham next weekend I would think.
Back home now unfortunately but another great long w/e in Cham.

jbob, Courmayeur was a good call. We skied in complete whiteout today on the Le Tour side – visibility was about 5m at the best of times. I was hit with motion sickness and vertigo, so it was a chore more than enjoyment.
On the plus side, it's been snowing lightly all arvo I'm out with Avalanche Academy at GM tomorrow (am fervently hoping we have visibility, otherwise it's going to be another day of nausea and vertigo).

Zero_G, I take little pleasure in reporting sunshine in Italy. Both on and off is good. We skied off the Arp down vesses di sinistra. Got fresh tracks, looked like only a couple of parties had been down. Stiff powder at the top but very floaty in the middle.

if you look at the mont blanc side of the valley to the left and above (roughly i think) of the montenvers train line you can see a huge area where all the trees were blown down by foehn wind during the summer of 2012. That day/night was interesting!!

Les Houches was a mixed bag today. Viz drifted in and out but the snow started to settle in the afternoon which improved things. Two coffee stops in the morning told the story.

eddiethebus, having a rest day, so had a ride up the Midi. At around 2500m we popped out of the thick cloud that was in the Chamonix valley, there were a few teams heading down the VB. Interestingly it was sunny and clear looking south.

eddiethebus, yes it did look good. I have dropped a clanger before setting off and landing in thick cloud halfway down on a glacier then snowploughing for a hour or two (while crapping myself), not good!

Combloux for us today. A few cm of fresh on the piste but not enough to make the off piste especially tempting. The steeper black of the Christomet lift was superb first thing and the red opposite the top of the lift had untracked fresh until lunch time.
My 99 euro skis coped admirably with the conditions

Went to Brevent/Flegere. 100% sunshine and good snow on piste conditions. A few more skiers than I was expecting, I guess a combination of chalet day off, and the weather. I've been here from before Christmas and it's been one of the very few properly sunny days.
Snow forecast for tonight!
PS saw a small slide across the cat track high up on the Bozon piste.

Indeed! First day of sunshine since I've been here (10 days). We skied the off piste at Le Tour/Vallorcine where there was enough soft snow left over from Monday night to be fun and the odd untracked bit here and there.
The snow started to get a little wet and heavy around 1pm but it was still good skiing. Of course, everything is completely tracked out now...
Tomorrow's forecast is for 0% sunshine, damn.

CMY yesterday, watching the boys and girls riding in the Freeride comp. Talk about going 'Big' ! Pistes were a bit scraped here and there but the off piste snow was cold and dry. An excellent day what with 1 euro 60 coffee and sunshine.
Les Houches today. A few cm of fresh to play in making everything good in the world. Best coffee stop goes to the 'Cha' (?)
I wish I knew the place better to score some tree lines.
More snow forecast tonight so fingers crossed for a good day tomorrow.

From Tuesday with Avalanche Academy. This was on The Meadows at GM, where there was still a fair amount of soft stuff. Was a good day and very enlightening.
