Been very little actually open today because of the weather. Basically just Galzigbahn, Nassereinbahn, gampenbahn and Mattunbahn (plus some of the button lifts) and not many pistes lower down open either. |
Its way enough for the numbers on the hill.

We have a temperature inversion situation this week. Cool in the valley & warm on the hill. Probably going to last upto at least Sunday.

Don't believe the resort report of 75 cms perfect snow - just back from a day with a guide and was lucky if I managed 15 turns in powder - lots of artificial and hard packed crud.
Foehn wind on Friday caused the damage - top lifts closed. But lovely sunshine and maybe better over at the Albona tomorrow.

Does the report not refer to piste depth as opposed to off piste snow depth, hence lack of powder...
Wind has definantly caused damage to snow cover, just looking at the bits of Kapall you can see from up Gampen and you can see where a lot has been stripped away. Pistes are rather hard, means that wiping out on a snowboard is not fun at all, although not as icy as I thought they would be.

In Zures are many lifts closed (Madloch, Muggengrat, Trittkopf(all top lifts)). In Lech, Warth and Schröcken are very good on piste conditions. So it's best to go from Alperauz further to Lech.

Folks.
The high pressure warm weather high up (cool in the valley) will remain with us into next week.
Tomorrow (Thursday) the KK is doing one of its ski workers partys.

I'm heading out to SA for a week on Sunday, how long does it take to ski to the Warth area?
Is it best to bus it to Lech and back?

If your going to St Anton , why would you want to ski in Warth ? Thats like going from Expert to Nursery slopes
To answer question.
If you want to go direct to Warth (without doing any skiing in Zurs or Lech) . Take the Free Blue bus from Alpe Rauz to Lech. Then your need to make your way up the hill (chairs) on western side of Lech to get to the AuenfeldJet (Transit Gondola) . This will take you to Warth Schrocken Ski Area.
Keep an eye on the time & weather because its a long & (very) expensive taxi ride back if the AuenfeldJet is closed.

Cheers, just interested really as I've never been. I remember doing the white ring a few years ago with a few drinks stops and it seemed to take up most of the day or maybe that's how our host planned it.

Mt, give Warth a go, some great off piste there and largest annual snowfall in the Alps. Suggest catching bus to Lech and dropping into Warth from Oberlech. We are so keen to ski Warth we've booked a week there in March, then round to St Anton for second week. If you cover distance fast get off the bus in Zurs and do the White Ring and then drop into Warth at Oberlech but you'd need to be out early and moving quickly to do that. Don't get stuck over in Warth though could be expensive!

It's a fair question; I want to explore Warth for a day or 2 but I'm staying in St Anton at New Year. I know St Anton will be busy, I'm hoping that Warth might be a bit quieter. I'm planning on getting an early Post Bus to Lech and heading over to Warth at least once while I'm there. Missing the lift back would be a major pain, but as discussed before (maybe on another thread), it is possible to get the bus from Warth down to Bludenz or Dornbirn and catch a train back, that last train is about 19:30.

stanton, low snow depths are generally more treacherous than having a decent base.

So if I understand that correctly - a ski guide was leading a British man and his two sons on a ski tour. The avalanche warning was only level 1. The, guide, father and one son were caught up in the avalanche while the other son was not. The guide and the father were injured while one son was buried under the snow and died.
Very very unusual for a fatality when touring with a guide in level 1 avalanche conditions. My thoughts go out to the family.

According to the link above, the Father was 51 and his sons were 16 year old twins. It was during the descent that a slab avalanche was released. The guide (39) was able to ski out of it after 150m and immediately started the search. Read in the paper today that the father broke his arm in the accident.

I'll stick this in here as well....
To those heading to the arlberg soon please be careful! Everything that has fallen over the last few weeks has either been heavily affected by strong winds or fell because of strong winds! Level 1 could only be applied to open, wind side faces, I cut into a couple of wind slabs on a leeward aspect and it's pretty scary at the moment!
What I saw on a south facing gulley was a little crust, a small, very weak layer then a huge wind slab followed by what can pretty much be described as 30 cm of nothing! Unless we get more snow a rough rule could be if it's fun to ski it's probably wind deposits and therefore very sketchy at the moment! Please be careful

dulcamara, I've heard very similar reports from mates who were touring around Axamer Lizum - hoar, hoar, wind slab, more hoar. Actually quite glad to be going back the UK for Christmas, hopefully by the time I'm back everything will deeply buried under new snow.
If not, at least Nordkette should be fine; it's brutally south-facing so there's literally no snow offpiste to go bad.

I'm heading to St Anton on saturday for the week. Fingers crossed for more snow than forecast!!! But if the worst comes to the worst will the piste skiing still be ok (tbh that's all I'm going for, not quite up to off piste standards yet!)

I was skiing in Lech and Warth today. The upper pistes are showing signs of wear with a few rocks and bare patches around. The lower pistes are holding up well. Warth, IMO, is in better condition than Lech but both are still fine, (if you keep a look out for the stones).

Seriously, i don't know the area so well yet, if we get a dusting in a few days (and our prayers are answered and the wind leaves it alone) anyone able to suggest some off-piste that might be fun to ski with my brother when he comes to visit?
