Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sorry folks no update this morning, the details did not arrive in time and I had to go out. Crying or Very sad

It is snowing lightly down to Bourg right now and although the vis was not the greatest today, the snow is amazing and loads of it. You can still easily ride down to Bourg from Arc 1600 if you know the way. But do be careful off piste, the snow is very unstable out there right now. Toofy Grin

I will try to add some pics tomorrow.

Anyone coming out by car will need to have chains as they are stopping people driving up to the stations as the roads are getting worse tonight. The roads are quite bad already higher up. There is snow settling on the side roads around Bourg now. snowHead

Tomorrow should be amazing as they 'SAY' the weather might improve. I hope so. Time to get the camera out!! Toofy Grin

It was a rather lovely day. Skied a lot of short off-piste pitches, mostly low angle as avy risk was posted as 4 or 3. Saw one guy get caught in a small slide in the gully underneath the top of the Arpette chairlift - didn't seem to get buried, but needed a bloodwagon for what I assume was a twisted knee. Weather was very nice, pleasantly cold, not much wind and just a little bit of high cloud. The powder was heavier than it was last week, but still extremely skiable Happy

December keeps on giving!

I really hope when I get back after Christmas the updates each morning arrive in time before I leave for the hill. Sorry no update again this morning. Next post will be after Christmas.

But!!! What a fun day we had. Loads of fresh powder!! Blue sky and little wind. Perfect Very Happy . We spent almost the whole day playing in the safer off piste areas.

Started with a few runs around the Arpette Lift to warm up. Then over towards the snow park to see what is happening. They should have at least some of it open very soon.

Then back up to the ridge and down to the Altiport for some great sandwiches. Very nice. You must go and try their special for 7 Euros!! Toofy Grin

Over to Arc 2000 side after lunch and a couple of runs down the middle ridge. Fun, but they are putting in the sledge course again , very bad!! Twisted Evil

Time to follow the sun, so over to the Vallandry side and in the bowls above the forests before going down through the trees to the Derby Chair. Made a couple of loops and then we headed off piste all the way back to Arc 1800 and the Vagere Chair, which had just broken when we arrived. Evil or Very Mad

Finally the group split, some to the bar, whilst others skied down the blue track back to Arc 1600 and home.

Here is one photo of the many jumps people tried today. If you got it wrong it did not hurt with all this fresh powder!! Toofy Grin

What a great day!! More Photos in the new 'December 2012 album' over on my Les Arcs Winter page. Very Happy

Day off the slopes for me so no photos. The weather wasn't too appetising, so after yesterday's perfection thought we'd relax. The day started with fairly heavy snow (at 1800m) and low cloud, but it's warm so the snow sometimes turned to sleet and + temperatures. That fluctuated during the day, with the odd clearer spell and varying amounts of snow. We're back to heavy snow as I type. Further up the hill today's snowfall will have helped refresh things a little, but not reset the off-piste after yesterday's powderfest.

It's really slamming down now, and has been for two or three hours. Might have to revise my view about the off-piste being reset if it continues like this!

My last update before Christmas as I am having a break for a few days.

I just heard that the snow fell most of the day yesterday and it is looking good today with fresh powder everywhere and you can easily get down to Bourg if you know the way off piste.

The snow depth at Arc 1600 is 115cm, at Arc 2000 about 143cm, at the top of the Transarc around 174cm and at the top of Aigle Rouge a massive 335cm so I think I am safe in saying there will be plenty of snow for quite a while.

Needless to say the roads are slippy and you might well need to have chains if you are driving up the mountain if the bad weather does come back although the word rain has also been mentioned for lower areas, but getting to Bourg should be ok.

I am sure those out over the Christmas period will keep the posts coming.

Merry Christmas for anyone out over the festive period and I will start posting again later next week.

Bonne Noel!!

Hi Snowcrazy, do you know why the snow depth so much higher is on the Aigle Rouge than for example Arc 2000 or Roche de Mio in La Plagne?

Today turned out better than I thought it might. It started of with a little bit of cloud in the valley:

Pistes were in good condition, and generally very quiet

There was perhaps 15cm of fresh snow from last night, a bit heavy on lower aspects though as a result of the mild temperatures yesterday. On higher slopes conditions were much better, and the best skiing I found was a couple of laps around Lanchette heading right at the top towards the bottom of Genepi. Lovely snow on what I think was the first day of the season that lift was running. Big smiles all round Happy

A bit of high cloud came in this afternoon, which I guess is the first signs of the front that will bring mild temperatures and rain to lower slopes tomorrow.

Absolutely right! Having said that, they were obviously surprised to be rushed off their feet and the service was not up to the usual standard. wink

Great day yesterday through the trees at Villaroger, ending with the slow lifts back up, and the final run of the week was an awesome trip down the untouched snow of Droset. Great snow, clear skies as we left (at 5.30 this morning). Best wishes for a great Christmas week for those of you about to ski. Very Happy

I explored the Nordic ski area down in Nancroix today - tried out classic cross country for the first time! Discovered that my knees need to be stronger. Then went for a lovely walk from there up to Rosuel & saw 2 Golden Eagles Toofy Grin

A few centimetres of fresh snow overnight, but only above 1600m from looking at where snow starts to appear on the trees. Colder today by about 6 degrees than it has been for a few days, and lots of low cloud. Plenty of snow forecast over next few days.

A very lovely morning, especially on the higher slopes. Perhaps 10 or 15cm of fresh snow overnight, so higher pistes in great condition although lower slopes getting quite hard or even icy in busy traffic zones because of mild temperature and a little bit of rain. It was mostly sunny, especially on the Arc 1800 side of the resort, with a bit of low cloud in the valley.

It's still fairly quiet, with almost no queueing for lifts.

Proving there's many ways to enjoy the mountains, spotted this snowshoer taking a very steep line up to the Arpette restaurant (it's much steeper than this photo appears).
