Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The fellowship of the tow road! Have been missing that whole getting there is half the fun element of Pennine Skiing, although the Glen Orchy road is a worthy replacement. Hopefully not too regularly.

I remember the chain fixing unfortunately I'm really bad with faces, might be at the gorm on Thursday although Lecht is looking more likely - never been.

A short video from the lower slopes of CairnGorm as the snowclouds started to lift yesterday afternoon:

http://youtube.com/v/3Hlb6wagiZw

Much better skiing than might have been expected after the weekend thaw/freeze, base is firm, but grippy and the new covering of snow helping too. Only icy area I came across was the lower M1 RaceTrack which can be avoided by exiting it via Horizon Road to the 105.

^Starting to brighten up over Coire Cas later on Monday, a fine day this morning (Tuesday) with a bluebird forecast for Wed.

^Ciste Tow, the Top Basin was giving sweet early season turns to get the ski legs back.

Fantastic weather across the Highlands as we approach the middle of the week, Glencoe, CairnGorm and the Lecht are open daily, so if you can get up Wednesday or Thursday it's def recommended. Glencoe missed Monday's snow showers that CairnGorm and the Lecht got and the base has set up much harder out west after the weekend's weather. Much more forgiving surface conditions in the East at the moment, but for good skiers with good edges you can get a decent day in at the 'Coe too.

More of that sort of weather coming up Wed and Thursday, so get up if you can. More pix in the Public Reports at http://www.winterhighland.info/publicreports/index.php?21,2012-12-11

I seem to be talking to myself, an indication that those not Christmas Shopping have been on the slopes when they've had a chance the last few days? snowHead

A few pix from Wednesday, another fine day forecast for Thursday before a big storm arrives Friday, then early indications are for things calming down again for the weekend. Fingers and toes crossed!

Great day on wednesday, started off with great visibility and perfect snow, although it could have been a bit thicker in places, clouds were the only thing to bring it down. Early afternoon sun was out making it the perfect day.

Just off the m2:

m2 itself, near the bottom huge patches of ice, and kinda cruddy nearer the top, but in between it was great:

Above the top of the quad chair the snow is Ok and wide cover... on the summit runs the snow was nice... at the bottom it was a bit soft and slushy (which is great I love soft slushy snow) but narrow.... the bit in the middle was the problem... I belive the correct term is breakable crust Evil or Very Mad ... still great base if there is more snow... being able to ski back to the quad chair/road is amazing before Christmas... snowHead

oldagedpredator, excellent pix again, and so good to see Glencoe action. Cool

I had a really good day on Cairngorm with shoogly. Over 15,000 feet of vertical skied. a leisurely lunch and hardly a minute of queuing either. Testing moments at times though with some pisted surfaces varying back and forth from super grippy to super slick and the untouched snow going from breakable crust to pockets of packed powder, then to ice floes just as quickly.

Absolutely fantastic day today at Cairngorm with gorgeous snow on the top runs, harder packed down below but still great and all day blue skies and sun up above the cloud in the valley.

Some significant snow forecast over the next few days but probably likely the ski area will be closed with high winds and low vis - should be well set up for the festive period after all that! snowHead

Ski Club of GB report on Mon 17 Dec has no mention of Glencoe, Cairngorm or The Lecht - therefore no mention of ANY open skiing in Scotland Shocked ! Reliable as ever eh?

Are they just taking the p!$$ or something Mad ? I give you:

Quote:
Glenshee was hoping to open over the weekend but were unable to, due to unfavourable snow conditions. There are patches of good snow on the mountain but no complete runs at the moment. They await further snowfall.

The Nevis Range (15/60cm) opened over the weekend once again. The higher runs were quite windblown but there are plenty of areas of good snow. They were closed between Monday 17th December and Wednesday 19th December but from Thursday onwards they’ll be open for the season, snow permitting.

Unbelievable!

Another day a Glencoe - snow got better and better and better on the upper runs. Shame the light went the other way.

Lower slopes not too clever but main basin improved through the day even if the light didn't. Plateau runs are smooth, if the temperature lifts they'll be fine. Upper runs were pisted by passage. Some scraped back to plate, not much though, more than enough stashes of shavings to turn on. A lot more pleasant to ski on than of late, even when the light went. Lower Etive Glades still had some edges to catch you but that was because it hadnt seen the traffic of the other runs. Unless it gets warm, wet and then very cold things should be fine on the upper runs. If it does then its back to skiing and boarding it into submission again.

mountainaddict, same old, same old - they're a club for holiday skiers who go anywhere but Scotland, totally inept and totally out of touch with the home scene to be honest. Bet most of them don't even know you can ski outdoors on snow on lift served runs in England. As you probably know there's a thread on Winterhighland about this and as far as I know they haven't even bothered to reply to repeated e-mails and letters on the subject, as the owner of Glencoe posted over there with their wildly inaccurate information they're potentially doing significant damage to ski areas in Scotland but it seems they don't give a stuff!

We're thinking about it - but tonight's Winterhighland weather update (in the pictorial boxes at least) is now suggesting hurricane force winds between tomorrow and Sunday...... Confused Still time for it to change for the better eh?

As a regular summer/autumn skier at Tignes, I e mailed the SCGB once because their website was showing a total cover/winter wonderland (ie completely misleading) webcam image of the glacier there posted in the autumn as being current conditions - when I'd just come back and knew better.

They responded promptly with an apology and changed the image Smile .

It's heavy snow as well though but yes the hatched might have to battened down for a few days as the storm hits but whether it'll last into Sunday is anyone's guess right now, weather models are a bit all over the place about the detail more than 3/4 days out.

A few pix from another Bluebird Tuesday... not a lot happening on the mountain today apart from wind, just a few flurries so far, but there should be some drifting off higher plateau areas into the snowsports area though. Tonight and tomorrow is where the weather interest could be and still big uncertainty even at the short range, some model runs keep Strathspey dry with the edge of precipitation along the crest of the Northern Cairngorms - but this is sort of what happened last week and for CairnGorm, substantial snow was still blown off the Plateau into the snowsports area.

^M1 RaceTrack, Horizon Road and the Traverse from the top of the Fiacaill Ridge Poma.

^Ciste Fairway. Top Basin was pretty busy for mid-week as this had the best snow by with well pisted loose dry snow giving brilliant easy turns.

^Ptarmigan Traverse in great shape, looking down on the mist filled Strathspey below.

winds look very strong into saturday evening at least... and I wonder what this current system is doing to the snow pack on lower slopes. Coming from the south it is pretty warm and very wet with it.

Fingers crossed the majority of snow survives at the lower altitudes to build again going into the new year. Up top could be quite interesting though if the snow line is low enough.

shoogly Aye, fingers crossed - though webcam lens at SSC Hut at Cairngorm is currently snow covered. Hopefully a good sign eh?

Everytime we ski the Daylodge run (like last week) we assume it could be our last run down it of the season as (relatively speaking) we have rarely skied it - even when Burnside etc are skiable.

Anyway, that looks like it could be it for Scotland for us for a few weeks - off on a British Columbia road trip (inc. 3 days catskiing) a week today Very Happy.
