10th to the 13th also - flying out from Luton in the afternoon so a couple of hours to kill drinking in the bar in Geneva if you like. Really looking forward to it - never been skiing this early in the year before so here's hoping for some good conditions.
AlanB1976, definitely up for a pint, see you there

I'm flying out of Heathrow there just in time for the transfer so I'll probably see you there AlanB1976. I've never been this early in the season just hope the snow appears this weekend. I am having a lesson with tdc on the Friday. How much skiing have you both done?

I would say I'm just more than a beginner with skiing, although I'm going to try my hand at boarding on the Thu so have booked a lesson with them as well. It's boarding on Thu, skiing on Fri and whatever feels the best for me on Sat

I will also be at Melezes next weekend, but I am only arriving on the evening of the 12th and staying until Friday 17th.
Annamillennium and reded78 are you guys skiing on the 13th?
Yep skiing on the 13th - might stop at lunch as my mate is a big F1 fan so might watch the first hour of the grand prix before catching the transfer home.
I've had about 4/5 weeks skiing split over full weeks and odd weekends away here and there, but we are also having a lesson on Friday morning as well to brush up on technique etc.

Yes I'll be skiing on the 13th too, so hopefully catch up with you Touchguru, looking forward to getting on the snow now.
Think we are probably on the same lesson on Friday morning then reded78, I've done about 9 weeks but last season was the first time I'd skied since leaving school so sort of getting there now.
Is anyone taking any of there own equipment?
Annamillennium, I am taking all my own gear, but I know they have skis you can use at the chalet.
Have you got your own boots? If not, I am not sure that Melezes has them but there are plenty of rental places in Val Claret or Le Lac where you can hire boots from.
Last edited by So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much on Fri 4-11-11 17:32; edited 1 time in total

Touchguru, I have my own skis and boots, but was trying to decide about skis as they seem to have the same ones for demo.
Although I think I'd be happier to know I'd definitely got them for the lesson on Friday, so they'll probably end up going. Getting my boots adjusted in the morning.

I'm just taking my boots - didn't seem worthwhile going through the hassle of taking skis when they have them for free. Also - might be good to try some new bits of kit.
From memory the guys at Melezes sorted rental boots / skis etc the night of arrival so there was no faffing around in the morning.
Getting excited now - hope the snow forecasts are accurate.

rjs, I am taking them back to Snow and Rock at the Chill Factore in the morning, to see what can be done. If not I am going to take them somewhere a bit more specialist. Why do you ask?

Nevada Sports - high on the Palafour gallery will fix your boots for you - my last 2 pairs have come from there. they only sell boots.

Annamillennium, Most of the ski shops in Tignes will be closed doing shopfitting for the winter that week, there may be some people doing race boot fitting by appointment, stick to your current plan.

Pedantica, yes, although those conditions were a lot worse than I've ever had at that time of year. The fresh snow we had was very welcome of course, but not being able to ski directly to or from the chairlift was a novel experience, and the amount of ice we were dealing with was much more extensive than I've previously skied on. But even in those challenging conditions it's still possible to do lots of good work and have lots of fun along the way The fresh snow we had for the final day was lovely, although the race teams were all having a little grumble about it!

Glacier shut today with very high winds. We went up to the top of the funi to collect some kit and it was blowing a hoopoe. There was no way it could have opened today.

rob@rar, I'm hoping there is some positive in your "yet" above. A number of the weather forecasts are still predicting a good lump of snow over the next few days (I know how unreliable these can be from having read the weather outlook thread), any thoughts on what to expect from "locals" in town.

The especially entertaining bit of that was seeing spare legs nonchalantly parked between rocks! I wish I'd taken a photo.

Indeed. And they are just the sort of conditions in which it's good to have a martinet like Scott saying, 'shut up and get on with it' (or words to that effect). Left to my own devices, I'd either have whinged or not skied. As it was, I just whinged.

reded78, Sorry to pour water on your Nov 5 bonfire - but I see very little snow below 3000 m in the next 2 weeks, that said it is a very changeable picture - the rain forecast EK for next weekend a couple of days ago has vanished - (data from a professional website).

has been snowing up on the top of the mountains around Val d'Isere today in the little gap in the weather we had therefore it is better than nothing I suppose. Things can change to radically - last year opening weekend we had a massive amount of snow fall so anything can happen at anytime. Fingers crossed.

The forecasts seemed to be fairly wrong didn't they. It just looks rainy and grim in Tignes, and that 15 metres of snow overnight or whatever it was that was supposed to slam into Zermatt doesn't seem to have materialized either.
paulio, I suppose that depends. Obviously you're exaggerating with 15m of snow at Zermatt (2m was the largest I saw suggested). According to the SLF as of 05 November:
- Precipitation started Thursday, snow line 2000m rose to 2400m on Saturday.
- [accumulated] Snowfall from just below 2600m, upper Maggia valleys, about 1m, from Monte Rosa into the Simplon region and in the remaining parts of northern Ticino, 50 to 70 cm. Along the remaining Main Alpine Ridge from the Great St. Bernard into the Bernina region about 30 cm of new snow.
The rest of the storm (from yesterday evening) is likely to bring:
- Heaviest precipitation in southern Valais, at its most intense during Saturday night.
- From the Monte Rosa over the Simplon region into the Binntal, as much as an additional meter of snowfall is anticipated.
- Southern Valais over Goms into northern Ticino, another 30 to 50 cm of snowfall is expected.
- Even greater amounts of snowfall are possible.
- Initial snow line approximately 2600 m. Over the course of the day descending towards 2000 m.
In terms of Tignes the storm always looked like it was going to be more focussed further to the north east (so on the Italian side then up to Monterosa and into Switzerland). Nevertheless snowforecast.com (no idea how they get these figures) recorded 24cm of snowfall at 2500m in Tignes between Thursday night and this morning.

A lot better viz this morning and only slight drizzle in the village. The snowline remains at approx 2500 meters. Hopefully the wind has eased on the glacier and we can get some skiing today
