stewart woodward, Hi Stewart, I am out next week working for Sally C. Does it look like they will get the links to vdi open? Always handy from Lac if we can get up the Aeroski and over to Grand pre etc for the lower level folks. Palafour? Hope you're well, see you soon and keep warm Bry

skihog, I heard from one of the top guys from STGM that Aeroski and Tufs should be opening this weekend. There's enough snow-making to open piste-H by the looks of things, so all good for Val Despair

Today was just great with fantastic snow but very low temperatures. Tomorrow is forecast clear and colder & Friday snow and even colder

When you say it was cold today are we talking anywhere near that day or two of -21 or whatever it was in the week before Christmas of last year? Not that I mind either way but just wondered

Help! I've got a warm duvet too, but wasn't aiming to bring it to wear on the ski slopes.
Edit: think I might have to go on a crash diet for a week, so as to be able to accommodate more layers under my outer clothing.

Hurtle, diet? That's no fun. Try my strategy: comfort food in abundance, and build up a natural insulation layer

jonm, funnily enough, just after posting that, I thought to myself: wonder if fat will keep me warmer than merino?

rob@rar, that's right, I don't think you've seen me out skiing since have you, apart from that time indoors at Hemel. No, I ditched the shell idea as it didn't work for me somehow and I went back to having an insulated jacket again like I used to. I just wear one set of thermals and a fleece gilet under that insulated jacket and I'm just right . Despite losing a vast proportion of my natural insulating layer by this time last year too it was just the job . I am in the same boat in that respect this year too-exactly the same weight practically to the kilo
Hurtle, that very cold day last year in Tignes, my body and legs were just right, it was my hands that felt cold, despite having some Hestras on which are meant to be amongst the warmest gloves about so I'm told.
stewart woodward,

It was colder than -21 today Forecast - 40 tomorrow night, but that won't bother me as i have a very warm duvet
|
I thought the -21 day (in the daytime I mean) I'm thinking of last year was a lot colder than usual? It certainly felt a lot colder than any other time I'd skied in Tignes. Obviously not that unusual if it was colder than that again today It's just I spent a week in Lapland one February and -20's in the daytime was normal there and that's obviously quite a bit more North than Tignes is.

Hurtle, may your runs be blessed with bottomless powder and all your turns be rounded.
I expect a full report on how you get on with Sally and her colleagues. You skied well on Tuesday (working the skis in the final third of the turn which we know is something you don't always do) and you should take that thought to Tignes with you. We can continue on that theme on Monday.

My trouble is that I can't think and ski at the same time, so when I'm thinking, I'm not 'working the skis.' Sad, innit? |
I know that feeling. Trick is to repeat it often enough when you are working on developing the skills so that it becomes instinctive rather than something you need to focus on.

stewart woodward, do you touch-type? Do you sing? Do you play a musical instrument? Then you will know about practising motor skills to the point where your technique becomes instinctive and automatic. Can't tell you the physiology of it I'm afraid, and it's obviously a colloquial expression, but expect that someone will soon come along who can.

Any word from out there as to what runs/lifts might be operational for the opening weekend of Espace Killy?
|
|
|

phillip33, we were there just after Christmas and it was still nasty. Finished very early one day and headed for the safety of the Alpaka - I think it's the earliest we've ever finished - the wind was brutal. So obviously we're going back again this year at the same time

mountainaddict, Dont know about Tignes yet, but according to http://www.radiovaldisere.com/article.php?id=2172
FORNET - ski-ing top of Pissalis to the foot of the Valon gondola. The Fornet cablecar will be open.
SOLAISE - ski-ing on the top (except Cugnai). Unable to ski down to val.
BELVARDE - ski-ing mainly on the back of Belvarde leading round to La Daille
Update re links with Tignes this evening.
50CMs snow at the top. Large amounts of artificial snow mean very good ski-ing for the start of the season.

From the week of the 10th December onwards genreally which significant lifts do they normally keep closed due to lack of demand throughout the Espace Killy?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Christopher, Tignes will not be using this lack of demand policy to the important lifts. It's the late snowfall that delays the opening, eg, chaudannes may not open as skiing down to boisses and breviers is currently out of the question. The same goes for Fresse as prariond remains to be quite rocky.
The other two lift that connect to Val are scheduled to open tomorrow.
