summer, is Champery open/due to open yet? |
It's been open, but shut Tuesday as lacking White stuff after the rain! Word on the street is NO opening this weekend and unlikely next week either Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! There is a big high pressure blip due for the next few days too which does not normally bring much snow......But things can change

Anyone about Tuesday 14th or Wednesday 15th next week. I am popping out to Morzine to service a chalet and thought it may be a good idea to have an early season ski up in Avoriaz.

Chatel over to Avoriaz was glorious today...Avoriaz little chaotic with ski test but the snow was remarkably good. Ski school training tomorrow and hopefully pistes will be nice and quiet!

Just had a great weekend in Avoriaz (staying overnight in Morzine). About 90% of Avoriaz was open, as were most of the runs in the Chatel/Avoriaz sector. It was possible to ski down to Prodains & Ardent. Avoriaz was a bargain €15.50 for the day, Avoriaz/Chatel c€32.
The snow was pretty good, a few small stones on a couple of runs, but easily avoided. Avoriaz was fairly busy due to the ski test, but the longest queue I had was about 3 or 4 minutes, and mostly we skied straight onto the lifts. Chatel on Sunday morning was deserted, we were by ourselves on the first few runs of the morning. There was a big queue for the ticket office first thing in Central Avoriaz.
Driving through Morzine/Les Gets, it's clear they could do with a serious dump of snow to open fully down to resort, although it was clear that they were trying to get snow onto the pistes as best they could.

Whitters,
I'm thinking of heading to Avoriaz/Morzine on Friday - do you know if they opened extra lifts for the weekend, or whether the same number should be open during the week?
Thanks

Looks like they are open for business now all week, including the Chatel link:
http://www.avoriaz.com/ski-holidays/operating-lifts.php
Snow was better than I expected at the weekend up at Avoriaz, although its true that they had lost at least 50% in the thaw and skiing is now mainly reduced to on-piste options only. Fortunately the rain turned to snow eventually which then froze onto the base below, which meant that the old base surface below the new snow is grippy rather than icy. A lot of the closed runs wouldnt need much to get them open again, and they are starting to kick out artificial snow again (at least the reservoirs should be full after all the rain!). In fact a lot of 'closed' runs were perfectly skiable with just the odd hole to dodge, er, so a friend told me..
Does anyone know what the upgrade to the Ardent lift was all about? looks pretty much the same old Ardent lift to me.

simo1234, looking at the Avoriaz website this morning, it looks much the same for today. The forecast for the week is sunny but cold, so if this pistes hold up and the snowmaking equipment can be used it should be OK.
Morzine was planned to open up next weekend, but lots to do before that can happen, although it might be better up high. Access to Avoriaz from Morzine is via the Prodains or Ardent lifts, Super Morzine bubble lift was not operational this weekend.

We had ski school training in Avoriaz/ Chatel today and was fantastically quiet! Canons blowing out snow everywhere and very funny site in Chatel village of green piste and 20ft plus piles of snow dotted around the green areas!! Bit icy on a few of the steeper areas but otherwise lovely! Very very cold at top of Fornet whilst doing ski school chatter!!!! Rumours of snow on the horizon for Weds Thurs which is just what we need Swiss side to get things open!

FreeBeer, believe its the same cabins but all the pylons/wiring etc were replaced. It seems considerably faster now, says 5 minutes, but of course we can't remember what the old rate was. Takes off a bit sharpish and also lands with quite a jerk at the top.
Much colder today than yesterday but sunnier - the Chatel side was gloriously quiet and lots of the lifts open - really had to move apace to not freeze, we went over to Avoriaz early afternoon and again so much quieter than yesterday, agree with summer, that it was very cold at the top of Fornet.
Les Gets certainly looking a bit chaotic by the bottom of the new Red Egg - and we drove up to the top of the road up the Chavannes to see what was going on there. A lot of earth moving vehicles scattered about.
Minus 10.7 outside at the moment - 10 p.m. French time - lots of layers tomorrow.

Pamski, FreeBeer, they seem to have a few teething troubles with the Ardent changes - we went on it 4 or 5 times, and twice it stopped for a couple of minutes for no reason that I could see. It could have just been random checks I suppose, or maybe wheelchair users boarding or something similar.

Just checked the Les Gets webcam and it shows one of the new red bubbles. At least that looks ready for the weekend.

bobojim, it sure has been - what a different scene now from a few hours earlier. Let's hope we are awoken by the sound of the snow plough early tomorrow morning!
And there seemed to be a frenzy of activity by the bottom of the red egg this morning - hopefully winching the loo block off the pavement!!!

Pamski,
Well, your wish has been granted, just been woken by the snow plough and it is still snowing heavily .
Forecast to snow through most of today, easing off later and brightening up tomorrow. Pistes were in good shape in Avoriaz and Chatel yesterday, but this will certainly improve things further.

Ardoyne, the plough was certainly round about 4.30 this morning, just doing another sweep - probably about ten or twelve inches so far sitting on our post box.
Yes - we were in Chatel yesterday and the pistes were good - luckily hardly a soul about so there was no waiting anywhere, it was something of a relief to get back to Lindarets and down to Ardent with a marked difference in the temperature! Much warmer this morning as its only about -4.7

Just spoke to one of the guys we use for ski hire and he claims "knee deep". Might be a stumpy chap though, can't really remember. Either way bloomin' sight better than after the biblical rainfall of 10 days ago.

Awesome in chatel. just had one of the best powder afternoons of my life. So deep it was hard to see and breathe, the odd rock under the surface still but plenty of faces had loaded up in the wind. Cant wait for the morning, getting in an early start! Still snowing heavily right now.

Yipeeeeee fantastic thigh deep and great snow, stopped falling in Champery about an hour ago and people have been skiing back into the village and down the high street!!! It's a touch wind blown in places as up top has been quite windy this side, makes for some interesting moments when you encounter a head high drift!!

Hope you're all having fun in the snow over there! Can anyone tell me what time the season pass office in Morzine opens? DD has her first ski school lesson on 27th December but we probably won't arrive until about 8pm or later on the 26th so need to get our passes sharpish or she'll miss the first lesson of that week.

geetee, can you book online - I know lots of people seem to, I never trust it myself and maybe not suitable for season passes. Took us about half an hour last weekend to get ours - also involved a lot of waving of the camera in the air to take new photos.
I would imagine that it would be 8.30 - sorry not to be more help.
Lovely day in the sun today - needed the sun as bitterly cold again. The roads surprisingly not very clear in Les Gets today - but the road past us seemed to be cleared around 5 a.m. and our own drive was being done before 7, so lots of noise out there. Interesting drive up to the Folliets lift on the Chavannes road this morning, front wheel drive car with full set of winter tyres, and OH said we were on the borderline... I was very white knuckled by the time we stopped.
No Red Egg functioning yet and the Rosta bowl did not appear open, we ended up skiing in the Nyon area, but on getting home could see that the dear old drag lift at La Turche was running. Fys lift running, bridge open, Atray not running.
