The weekend weather
Saturday
A cloudy day is over Austria on Saturday before. Time and again it is raining or snowing, the snow line from the west during the day increases rapidly from lower altitudes of 600 to 1,000 meters above sea level. The precipitate is focused along and north of the Alps, longer dry periods are expected, however in the south. It blows in the southern parts of the country is weak everywhere else lively up to strong wind from the west northwest. Temperatures in the early move from minus seven to zero degrees, the maximum values are zero to five degrees.
Sunday
On Sunday, the sun appears in the south mainly in the plains of the East, it can initially break in between, otherwise it is variable cloudiness and snowfall, especially on the northern Alps in the north and from time to time. The wind blows moderate to brisk, in the eastern lowland part strongly from the west, just south of the wind is rather weak. The spring temperatures reach minus two to three degrees, in the south to minus eight degrees. The maximum levels during the day are up one to five degrees.
Week starts
Monday
Beginning of the week it is in the south for more sunny, otherwise mostly cloudy or overcast at zeitweisem snow, along the northern Alps, it is snowing again and sometimes strong. The wind was blowing moderately, especially in the Danube region and the east part vividly from the northwest. The mercury comes in the morning hardly minus eight to minus two degrees beyond the south it is colder in some places. The maximum daily temperature is minus four to plus two degrees, with the highest values in the south.
Tuesday
On Tuesday outweigh the clouds and snowy at times a bit, especially on the northern Alps. In the south, however, were also regionally the sun. The wind blows slightly to moderately, in the lively East from West. The spring temperatures range from minus ten to minus four degrees in the south and colder. The daytime highs reach minus six to zero.

red 27, staying out of the way of the chaos as a stomach bug (or a chill) has kept me in the house today.
flangesax is reporting 50cms of new snow in Radstadt today - so lord knows how much has fallen up in Obertauern or Zauchesee - the eweb cams were all snowed up when I looked.
Very cold and snowy here in the Alpine Foreland above Rosenheim

Schnee-Rekord im Dezember declares Sunday's Osterreich. Over 50cm in a day in some places. And up to a metre over the weekend.
Certainly fabulous snow about and yesterday morning there was some really great skiing in deep snow. Off piste is still very mixed with the base still thin. So as well as great snow you get... ice, stones, roots and branches... etc, etc. So you want to pick your route!
The other hazard is the high winds, several days of 60kmh+. Tricky. And elsewhere in Austria there have been some rescues from cable cars.
Also by the end of the day the runs into Ischgl (which are fine for snow cover), are very hard and fast. Saw two nasty accidents yesterday within minutes of each other both requiring helicopter or sleds to get the injured off the slopes after high speed collisions.
Temperatures over the next few days look like they will be very cold indeed. After that the possibility of a return to mild temperatures? Maybe.

nozawaonsen, those Ischgl home runs are fantastic, but best done in the middle of the day. Red 5 I think was my favourite - some very steep pitches for a red and then cruising down thru the trees.

Spent the day at Mellau, very white all round, but not that much base yet, very strong winds and higher up the snow was more like little hard balls of polystyrene, further down quite wet large flakes. very flat light and white out. Snow was picking up as we left and is meant to stya snowing for the next few days so the area and vorarlberg should be good, will hopefully head out that way again end of next week.

First ski of the new season this afternoon. Met up with some local friends and headed off piste at Haus near Schladming. Some nice powder about though the base is a little thin in places for cutting through the trees. Cold, -15 at the top with a breeze, set to get colder. Piste in top condition from top to bottom. Very quiet.

Not done much skiing as a little off colour. Shame as conditions are excellent. Did manage a couple of hours at radstadt ski hill today, max height 1500m. Dead quiet lovely dry untouched powder all over the shop, no need for high altitude moonscapes and out of the way places today. Hope to do some more serious powder tomorrow, still snowing moderately in Schladming still pretty chilly.

Conditions great in Ischgl right now but it is incredibly cold and the wind is like a knife on more exposed runs. Visibility was poor to start with yesterday but it cleared up nicely by midday. (via SMS)

A perfect day in Ischgl today - not a cloud in the sky and cold fast slopes. Slopes are in pretty good shape though some were getting a little cut up (still no sign of evenb one mogul). (via SMS)

Full on skiing today with a group of very good skiers from Haus to Reiteralm and back to Schladming. Powder powder everywhere and all for me. There's a new gondola at Reiteralm replacing a very long t-bar, the old t-bar line made for some most excellent powder skiing. Also found a great new line down the Hochwurzen, open woodland, nice powder, the odd tree truck to watch out for. Cold again though after some rip roaring powder runs was rather warm again.

Another great day today, after a bitingly cold one yesterday and a zero vis day before that. Some of the more exposed runs higher up are having all the soft snow stripped by the wind making them more challenging than previously but lower down it is sheltered and moderately warm. (via SMS)

Skied Planai, Schladming today. A little warmer today, -5 at the top, -10 in valley, sunny. Still some great powder to be found even lower down. Rest of family due out tomorrow, after having flight cancelled yesterday due to a snow flurry.
Stuff happens in threes (i hope as 4 or 5 would be worse):
1. got electric shock plugging in xmas tree lights
2. walking under road bridge other night a snowplow went above me, showering snow and ice 20feet down in my direction, had to to run for to avoid.
3. near miss - driving out of the schladming multi-storey car park the down ramps were very icy. On final down ramp a 90 degree corner dab on brakes and wheels lock up on ice, heading for concrete wall. Let foot off brake, bit more steering, nothing carried straight on thought that was it, crunch, dab brakes again wiggle steering wheel, gee found some grip, 1 or 2 cms to spare, heart racing, close shave. maybe slower next time.

PeteMan, too early to call, we have more snow coming in at the end of the week, starting Christmas Eve. It is very mild right now due to a Föhn storm (+4°C on my balcony), but in the mountains when I left this afternoon it was -12°C and falling. We have loads of snow right now and clear night skies. The Föhn can break at any time and then the snow returns with a vengeance.
If you are worried send Caroline a PM as she is right there.

Hello all, thought I would give you a quick update as to the snow conditions in Westendorf.
We arrived here on Sat 18th, which was roughly the last time it snowed here. Since then, the weather has been warm (around 3 – 4 degrees, tshirt weather on one day!) every day which has moved the snow from nice wintery hard conditions to the very soft, spring like conditions that we currently have.
Up top the snow is still nice but the slopes further down, especially the nursery slope are starting to show mud coming through in various places.
On a plus, there has been so few people here at the resort this week that the slopes are still in a more than reasonable condition, and with snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow with colder weather to follow, next week is looking good for Westendorf.

It's coming waynos don't fret - seems to be moving slowly eastwards along the Alps. Just driven home for a small village SW of munich where there was loads of snow all day yesterday but clearing today. Topped the Irschenberg to see very little new stuff - now closed in and it's a full blown blizzard outside!

Xmas day skiing was interesting. Frozen piste coated in a few cms of fresh made educational skiing. Boxing day was better, headed to Zauchansee and was probably 10-15cm fresh though at the top pretty turned over by the wind. Lower down in the trees some quite pleasant patches of powder. Cold at -14.

Enough overnight snow last night to refresh the pistes (and soften the off-piste), but not really enough to make much difference. Been here (Altenmarkt) for three days now with about 50 others from our club. Spent today up at Zauchensee, good skiing but the cloud did not lift out of the valley until very late on. The group I'm with has now progressed to the stage that we're starting to spend most of the time in the trees or bowls: did the valley to the left of Gamskogelbahn II a few times around midday and it was skiing very well - a bit intimidating at the top!
Above zero in the village when I went hunting for a cashpoint earlier: a bit different from the -11C the other morning. Off to Wagrain tomorrow to see what we can find.

Enjoyed ourselves in Wagrain today. Got all the way across to Alpendorf no problem, but the top bowls aren't that big with shortish lifts and longish queues. Didn't find as much tree/off-piste skiing as yesterday, but the last run of the day down the line of the Grafenburg Express II chair was a real hoot - but whoever planted all those 2"x2" stakes around the place needs shooting! No fresh snow today, but sunny blue skies above a thin layer of valley cloud.
Not sure what we are doing tomorrow: depends a bit on how long the celebrations go on tonight. On previous experience elsewhere, New Year's day morning can be very quiet - maybe that will give us the incentive to get up the mountain early.

That's because that section is not an "off-piste" playground. It is privately owned forest and the stakes were probably either protecting new plantings or marking stumps that have to be removed next Spring. Most of the forests and mountains in Austria are privately owned and are part of someone's income. There is an accepted route down there, but all the one-week-wonders see some other t1t's tracks and think it is open season and they can ski where they like. Why not ask where the route actually goes next time

Hi Sue, thanks for the advice. This was directly under the chair, so I doubt the lift company really want lots of new trees growing up under them - so I assume from what you are saying they must be marking stumps. The higher part of the trail was marked as a skiroute, but once we hit the lift-line then clearly that didnt't apply. It would be good to be able to ask someone where the good stuff is, but who?? In some parts of the world, the ski patrol are very approachable, but are they in Austria? We've good german-speakers in the group, so language is not a problem.
