Back in 1783 another volcano in Iceland caused thick fog across Europe and even spread as far as the US, for eight whole months.
|
That would have been the Laki eruption - interestingly I've recently completed a uni assesment examining the (significant) effects that it had on British mortality rates.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Friday April 16, 2045
The volcanic ash cloud continues to affect UK airspace. Following the latest update from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until at least 1300 (UK time) on Saturday April 17.
There are currently no airspace restrictions in Scotland, Northern Ireland and in an area over the North Sea that includes the Shetlands and Orkney Isles. Manchester, Liverpool and all airports North of those may be available from 0400 (UK time) – 1000 (UK time) for departures to and arrivals from the North and West subject to individual co-ordination. However, please be advised that the situation is continuously changing. Forecasts indicate that the ash cloud is expected to return over Northern England at 1000 (UK time) and it is likely that restrictions will be reintroduced.
Please note these arrangements do not mean that all flights will operate. Anyone hoping to travel today or tomorrow should contact their airline before going to the airport.
We are looking for opportunities when the ash cloud moves sufficiently for us to enable some flights to operate under individual coordination with ATC.
We will review further Met Office information and at 0900 (UK time) on Saturday we will advise further arrangements.
We continue to work closely with airports, airlines, and the rest of Europe to understand and mitigate the implications of the volcanic eruption. |

TBH I know this is an interweb forum so real life does not matter but the general overtone in these threads of doom and gloom and always looking on the negative has annoyed me somewhat.
I know I got a reputation of been gloomy but FFS cheer up.
It's me and a few others that this has effected (for now) who are just accepting it and getting on with re arranging without any doomongering. Also the EoSB is still a week away so it maybe all ok by then.

Daughter just phoned from Courchevel - she is being bussed back at 11 p.m. Saturday evening and should arrive Gatwick around expected arrival time - she says she is standing outside a bar and all these coaches are turning up to take people away from tonight. For once in her life she is pleased that they are booked with a TO and its all been sorted for them.

Well from what I can see remotely (and not having any clients involved) the independent transfer companies and operators in Chamonix seem to be being terrific by at least offering (at someone's cost obviously) transport to and from Calais, etc.
Swiss airspace closed until 20h00 tonight (at least).

beanie1, no. But it did go on for more than a year. So even if one does get away on a flight because the wind has shifted, the wind could have shifted back again by the time one wants to return. In Northern Europe, flying may have become unreliable for quite a while to come.

While it is likely to be a long-lasting eruption it's very unlikely that this particular phase of the eruption (very violent, with lots of production of fine ash) will continue for aa long time. Typically it would be a few days like this, then subside to a lower level of energy release.

Sounds like the TOs are doing a good job of laying on alternative transport to get people to and from holidays in Europe. I guess it's people further afield that are truly stuck. Last I heard my cabin crew pal was stuck somewhere exotic on expenses! Not all bad news then.

Indeed. I suppose they would have to be flown to the nearest bit of Eurasia from whence they could be put onto coaches. Or maybe some of those mothballed ships up the Fal will be pressed into service; a kind of peacetime Dunkirk operation.
It must be costing some tour operators and airlines a fortune.

Driving to UK (Gatwick) from Bourg area early Tues Morning 20th April. Coming back to Bourg Sat 24th April - leaving UK early Sat 24th. Space for 3 people on outwards - 5 people back to france plus skis and kit. Share all costs. PM me if anyone interested. I am obviously assuming things don't get better between now and then and even if they do I think priority will be given to getting long haul passengers back, not scheduled Geneva Gatwick flights!
|
|
|
|
|
|
Just to add to that - we are heading back to the UK sometime early/mid week. Timing flexible, depends on weather and inclination. From Les Saisies, routing flexible. We would have room for a couple of people plus skis and baggage if it's not too voluminous.

Jeez! All I said was it wouldn't hurt to have a think about some alternatives just in case it goes on a bit longer than a few days and I get accused of doom mongering! Personally I think it's sensible/realistic to have a back up plan, no reason why not and Helen Beaumont obviously had the same idea. It might go on a couple of days, could be a week, no one knows. Some people are quick to criticise when folk are just trying to be helpful, or that's what it feels like anyway.
Hopefully everything will be back to normal soon.
