Just got a few hours in at Planai, Schladming. Some 10-15cm of fresh snow higher up from yesterday evening, a few snow showers today. Currently snowing. Been bed bound for last 2 days with man flu, the thought of some powder turns managed to drag me up the mountain, amazing how a little powder makes you forget how crap you're feeling. Back to bed for the afternoon now. Local forecast are for light snow today & tomorow then heavy snow Sunday though the freezing level rising off the valley.

Last year we went to Schladming the last week in February, which unfortunately turned out to be one of the warmest weeks in the entire season, and typically, nearly as soon as we left, it began snowing again. We're going in Jan this year for less mild weather. Unfortunately, the last time I went to Austria in January, I spent a week in conditions of -20 nearly every day, complete with howling blizzards. Hopefully that won't happen again!

okay time for an update. Awoke at 5am, not my son for a change but a coughing session, tail end of man flu. Was 10cm fresh outside, clear skies. Went back to sleep looking forward to a sunny powder day. By the time I got up the mountain, 9ish, it was snowing again and was heavy by lunchtime. Skied some wonderful powder between the trees at Hauser Kaibling, near Schladming, 20-30cms. Wind a little strong higher up. Still snowing heavy, pretty wet snow in town but will be fine higher up. Should be fantastic powder tomorrow

Just read stanton's latest snow report [[http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=41100&start=120#1109923]] Similar overnight conditions further east in Schladming, heavy rain in town! Freezing level seems to be about 1500m at the moment, lots of showers pushing through, based on the view from my window. A tad wet and soggy, maybe some powder higher up, hopefully a good overnight freeze will dry out the snow. At least the snow will settle and bond quickly.

waynos, Looks like you'll get your freeze-dry of the snow by Xmas. a couple of mildish days today and tomorrow with rain and maybe a bit of a foehn, but shouldn't last too long, light snow midweek and turning cold, in fact very, very cold if the Wetterzentrale graphics are correct
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavneur.html
If this doesn't show you a map, click on the box that says min/max temps and then click on the numbers, these are the hours out from 6am today, if you select midnight on Xmas/Boxing day you'll see what I mean!

just back from an afternoon at zauchansee. Heavy rain on the drive there, snow by the time we got to Zauchansee base, 1300m. Been stacks of snow in last couple of days and was snowing hard all afternoon and still is, well rain back at home. Much tempting looking powder around but don't judge a book by it's cover, was like cement!

In all the times ive been skiing im still not sure of a perfect time to go.
Ive tried just before xmas, during xmas, just after and the latest was the start of April and you know what im still not sure of the perfect time to go skiing.
Before and over xmas was real cold with lttle amounts of snow and less daylight hours, later i go the snow seems touch and go as to the warmer weather melting all the slopes.
Badgastein and St Anton have to be my favourites for conditions so far as everwhwere else ive been seems to have had problems of some sort, even USA that had the worse snow for 20 years when we went one xmas.
Maybe im just unlucky but ive always wondered is there a prime window of opertunity to book in advance as not everyone can wait for snow reports and do a last minute trip, well i can but the missus cant

nibbley-uk, I think that's one of those things we all have to take a chance with. The problem is that if one year you have great early/mid/late season snow, that is absolutely no indicator of whether you will or not the next year. And having good conditions in one resort is also not much of an indicator of whether you will for the same week the following year. We all have to take our chances I am afraid!!

nibbley-uk, Last two weeks of January or the first week of February have never let me down. That's not to say that the snow has always been fantastic or that the valley has been a winter wonderland but I've never not been able to ski more or less the whole resort

Much of Austria below 2000m has been battered with rain today and yesterday.
Temps should plunge again over the next few days.
Some lower pistes may get a little icy toward the end of the week.

A day of light to moderate snow at Schladming with rain below 1300m. The lowers slopes are a bit wet at the moment, holding up but have taken a beating. From around 1400m there is piles of new snow. Must have been 40+cms in last few days higher. Looks like powder but whenever i dipped a ski or two in it was very heavy and compacted. Maybe Obertauern will be a good choice if the sun comes out in the next day or so. Forecast to be getting colder from Wednesday with snow showers.

Was in Fieberbrunn, Tirol today, where it was also wet and misty, particularly lower down. On the upper slopes (Hochhörndl, Reckmoos Süd) there were patches of blue sky but the sun never made it through. Snow pretty good, though wet.

Light snow this morning in town and colder, at last. Looks like after today weather will settle down with sun and colder temps. Looks like I won't be getting any more powder on this trip.

A day of light snow showers until about 3:30pm when the heavens opened! Dumping it down now. hopefully keep going for a few hours and have some powder for tomorrow. happy chrimbo

Just looked at the cams for Schladming! The nasty green patches in the valley dissappeared in about twenty minutes! Everthing white again!
With the very cold weather forecast for the next few days this should freeze the snow in the valley solid. Wetter.at is forecasting highs of about -5 during the daytime for the next few days with lots of sun. Wish I was there!

Are they patches of green I see on the first picture? I hope it isn't like that when I go, hopefully it'll snow like crazy for 2 weeks before the 24th Jan. When is it forecast to start to snowing again?

Skied today in the Hohe Salve area, Going to Söll, with weather as in the photos above, blue cloudless skies and sun. Snow coverage is complete, with hard pistes, but there isn't any great depth of snow yet. No sign of snow just now but I am hoping that when the current high pressure area weakens, it will stay cold enough that any rain which comes in will fall as snow.

Herr Hefski, there's some thin snow cover in the valley but the piste are 100% complete and from mid mountain there's stacks of snow. I really wouldn't worry.

After a week of unbroken sunshine it clouded over today and gave some light snow. Probably only 1cm but made the piste skiing much more fun. Rather annoyed that on my last run of the day down Reiteralm, balck 2 or is 4, on the very steepest bit or just before I tore 4 inch section of edge from my rossi 9s, very nearly took a nasty fall as i was thrown backwards on a very steep bit of piste. I think the skis are kaput! Anyone got one rossi 9s 165cm ski they don't want?

I was there on Mon 29.12. Quite skiable but the pistes were hard, tending to icy. Descended part of the new piste from Westendorf back to Brixen on my backside . However, snow is forecast in the next few days, so I am hoping conditions will improve.

So... hows Kitz? And why isn't the Streif run open yet?
|
|
|

skiking4, I'm there 17th January and I've just recently found out that the Hahnenkamm Race starts on the 23rd January, so the Streif has been closed for preperation.
I'm interested to see how busy its going to be in town on that weekend!
