A bit more focus on technique and teaching; an acceptance of a range of approaches to the same broad challenges; cut out the nonsense about the way in which people contribute to the forum; and a bit more respect for fellow posters.

If you'd do it for nothing, chances are other people would: therefore, it is advice that's likely to lead to low wages, as Adam Smith noted in the 1770s:

I suspect this applies to ski instruction today.

Ok - how about a really clear steer from the Mods/Admin about how they would like to see BzK develop? Surely that is the way forward,
This will be my last post on this topic - I am obviously one of the ones who has offended by suggesting that long explanatory articles (from which I very much exempt Fastman - who is willing to have a discussion about things) are not always helpful. Other people have expressed this view - but not usually in BzK - which I guess is why many of us stay out of it.

I would suggest that we should do something. We could now "joke" this thread into submission, but it will only resurface in another form and in the meantime, more people will get hurt or offended.

Yes, could not agree more. Joking our way out of this one is not an option.

I don't know if I believe that Megamum's reasons for starting this thread were entirely altruistic. I think she just likes long topics.

Welcome to snowheads.
Not sure on this but I think they give a discount if you don't use the forums, you could try sending "David Goldsmith" a PM (Private message - under the "snowheads" graphic at the top of the page) seeking clarification.

cathy, has mirrored my feelings on BzK, BUT I would be VERY interested to hear from the the instructors how they would like to see this section progress. Instructors are usually very good at analysing problems and offering solutions. Let's hear something constructive rather than looking for divine intervention.

And for every Lewis Hamilton...?
I wouldn't mind betting that, on average, ski instructors are paid less than people with comparable skills following less congenial occupations.

laundryman, Yes but like many trades, it only becomes really fruitfull when you develop and start employing others. I bet there are a lot of folks running ski schools that make a few bob.

Frosty the Snowman, I know ski instructors who've taken that decision consciously, for that reason: but I think the comparison with less congenial jobs / trades / professions / vocations (call them what you will) stands.

I haven't read all of this or read back at some recent threads I've missed and can't be bothered to but my two centimes worth anyway:
1) What Hurtle said about docs cf instructors didn't come across to me as an indictment of all instructors who've ever been and ever will be, more as a contrast that happened to strike her on the posting behaviour of individual members of these groups. Seemed to have a point to me.
2) It's just too simple. If posters aren't civil others will feel obliged to finish it with them - didn't yer mamma teach you what happens when you're rude? - this is what brings down BZK - {to take this out of context} the substance IS going to lose to the process. Sure would be nice if it wouldn't do, but it just IS, so there's really no point in wishful thinking. If I want someone to work with me to our mutual benefit, it's not going to happen if the only way I'll play is if allowed to hold court and patronisingly pontificate then go all condescending and throw my toys out when this lesser being doesn't accept my edict. It doesn't matter where you post with that attitude - you'll be surrounded by discord and your message lost, no matter any original good intent.
3) Lots of different learning styles and I'm sure lots of people benefit from each of the different types of info and threads previously seen on BZK. I'm not sure I have a dominant learning style but analytical is certainly a major part and I get a lot from discussions and posts from the likes of Fastman and even v8. I'd like to see BZK continue as a place where no-one behaves like their right to express their opinion is greater than anyone else's. Perfectly ok to think your opinion is better, if an experienced skier or a skipro it should certainly be so, but your right to express it, and the right of the person you disagree with to express his, should be same. As the ever astute laundryman said no-one has a monopoly on knowledge (no, not even in medicine) and skiing is a pastime to the majority both here and elsewhere. This is a public all comers discussion board, not a certified professional standards committee and I for one don't want it to change and can't see any reasons for it to - please see and re-read point 2).
4) For some of the whingers, some of it is technical 'cos IT SIMPLY IS, if you want to not get that ('cos I know you do really), just GO PLAY ELSEWHERE. Best options if something doesn't sit well with you: a) express your opinion on the substance of the post not the process or the poster b) ask - if you're ignored go somewhere else - no-one here is paid c) just go somewhere else
