Model runs are showing potential for another big dump on Saturday and then Monday. Long term temps are dropping to or below average.
Lots of depressions lined up across the Atlantic

Yes, very. Although they've done a fantastic job of getting snow off the roads as I'm sure they always do.

More of the resort opening up today, and pistes in generally good condition. Some small patches of thin snow where the wind has stripped it, but only on small ridges and terrain breaks. This seems to be a bit more frequent on the Val d'Isere side. It was a lovely day today, lots of blue sky, no wind and pleasant temps. Perfect. Met Stewart at lunch - hope you're feeling a bit better!
Forecast is for deteriorating weather tomorrow, and more snow into the weekend.

The Val d'Isere website is still only reporting 25cm which is only the same as last December. However, looks like they are going to get some more over the next couple of days.

I'm increasingly of the view that reported snow depths are almost useless in finding out how good on piste conditions are. I'm skiing in Val at the moment and piste conditions are excellent, except for a few thin patches where the wind has stripped a bit of cover from ridges and terrain changes. To me 25cm sounds like marginal conditions, but the reality is significantly better than that. I skied Val in mid-December last year and conditions this year are much better.

That's great to hear Rob@rar.
VDI seems to down play it's conditions. The last two years have actually been quite good before christmas so if its significantly better than last year, I should be very pleased. I'm out on the 16th for a week.
Hope I don't miss out too much on any snow at home !

Peter S, unless there's a freakishly warm spell between now and then, you should have good on-piste conditions, and by then the resort should have opened up more pistes & lifts (it's still a bit limited at the moment).

I really recommend Le Couloir in Val Claret for a friendly and not overexpensive bar. There's also a swanky restaurant up top, and a whisky bar with armchairs half way down, so something for everybody. Lots of English staff and customers, but lots of French too. It was the only bar with anybody in it last week. |
I too can recommend the Couloir, I have had many lovely evenings in it over the years and the owner (Can't remember his name but the tall bald guy.) is very friendly and certainly the best person to have pour your whisky! If I ever get my hands on an Alpine bar I would like it to be like that.
I really hope I get to Tignes this year, find out in a week or so - fingers crossed
