I don't like the look of the forecasts for next week especially the one from serfaus as it mentions a Chinook-like wind. anyone know how long the warm spell is due to last?

Thanks for the info. It looks great. I'm currently basking in the Arizona sun so all this looks very appealing. I'll be there in 3 weeks so I hope all the snow doesn't melt.
Did anybody ski Austria this weekend?

Hi,
I went sking in Austria this weekend.
The last few days have seen temp below freezing all day and down to -7oC at night. The day temp are about -2oC. Went skiing for the first time with my boys to Flachau ( unfortunately my wife can't ski because she is pregnant!!). The conditions were perfect. There was only one lift open in our resort, but next week -end there willl be 6 lifts open so we will ski here then.
My only worry is the warm weather forecast for the middle of this week!!, but then it is meant to get colder again form Sunday onwards. Hopefully it be as warm as they think. The air is very cold here at the moment.
Here is the snow depth:-
altitude Valley Middle Summit
above sealevel 920 m 1500 m 1921 m
Snowdepth Trail 80 cm 110 cm 150 cm
Snowdepth Terrain 80 cm 110 cm 150 cm

What do the weather experts think the likely hood of rains is in the Tirol/Salzburg region from Thursday to Monday?
Methcheck and weather.co.uk are saying the temps are rising and there may be rain.

Looks better now dingdong, Tirol to miss the rain but then get some more snow over the weekend - take a look at snow-forecast.com which is free access today and tomorrow as they've had IT issues, that's forecasting minimal rain then another foot of snow for Soll.

Temperature inversions have occured in many Austrian places.
For example, the city of Salzburg is below zero, but in the mountains nearby it is +6C and sunny.
Do not worry, 1,5-2m deep snow does not melt that quickly.
A little bit of melting does some good. It creates a good base before the snow falls predicted for the week-end and next week.

dingdong, it will be mosty sunny, no real chance for heavy rain.
The snow line at the moment is quite high, about at 3000m. By Friday it goes down to 1200m in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, and 1600-2100m elsewhere.

It looks like 5 - 20cm of freshies across much of the West Austrian Alps overnight, down to around 600m.

Hi,
After several days of the snow melting in the village the temp is now -1.6 oC and its SNOWING very heavily. I went skiing at the weekend and the conditions were excellent even after the warmer spell last week. Although it never really got that warm on the mountain. You can see the snow falling on the web cam. Once the snow stops I will take some pictures.

Hi again,
A new feature at our resort and a few others in Austria is http://skiline.cc where you can put in your ski ticket number and it tells you how long you skied , what lifts you went up, how many Km you skied,etc.
Here is mine for yesterday:-
http://shorterlink.com/?T1QYDC
It also covers there resorts:-
* Salzstiegl
* Planai
* Kaibling
* Reiteralm
* Grossarl
* Dorfgastein
* Hochkönig
* Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang
* Schmittenhöhe
* Gerlitzen
* Katschberg
* Schlick2000
* Wildschönau
* Reutte
* Jungholz
* Lienz Zettersfeld
* Lienz Hochstein
I think its a really good idea.

Yes that is me - musicman. The one below is Skimad which is my 7 year old son. My other son who is 5 also did the same amount of skiing but he is not there because he does not need a ski pass yet ( under 6 are free!!). We didn't ski that much yesterday because we took a friend who was staying for the week-end up with us, and she had only skied for about 2 weeks.
I think next week-end more lifts will be open so I will see how much I ski next week-end.

SNOW REPORT UPDATE
Winter is back in Austria, especially in the Eastern parts. Styria (Ski amadé) seemed to have the most snow yesterday. From some places 70cm fresh snow was reported.
Lower Austria (close to Vienna) was lucky again. On average they had 20-40cm fresh snow.
A huge dump has reached Hochkar with 60cm fresh snow. Today another 10-25cm is expected in this region.
Less snow fell on the Western parts, Tyrol had 5-15cm fresh snow.

hopingforsnow, My friend in the Tirol reports heavy snow yesterday and today, although this is not reflected so far in the official snow reports. I think it's safe to say conditions at this time of year are better then could reasonably be hoped for, and you're pretty much certain of some decent skiing on the 15th - I'm out there then too! Key factor from now on is the temperature trend, if it stays cold then the cannons can top up what nature has provided. If you've been over there before you'll know that the Tirolean snow fields are rock-free, smooth grassy alps that can be skied with minimal snow cover. Enjoy!
