Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

As for Skiing today at Nevis....
Late start got there at 11.30 - My Father wanted a lift to Fort Bill and he doesn't like early starts rolling eyes - I skiied 5 runs off the Alpha tow which were just alright where the basher had been but I didn't fancy the unpisted bits I tryed so never headed up top... An icy Goose is not much fun rolling eyes
I did spent over an hour skiing which was OK Very Happy But spent most of the afternoon in Fort Bill shopping where I found:-
Scott Missions 178 with bindings ex demo - £250 - didn't buy them but may go back
The ski boots I want reduced from £300 to £200 but didn't have the time to spend getting fitted (and they may not be the best ones for me has I haven't been fitted for them rolling eyes )
Pair of light weight walking boots 50% off which I got and am very pleased with Very Happy

We're looking to go to Scotland next weekend 26/27. It's our wedding anniversary so deserve a trip but can't afford to go away for the whole week this year.

I can ski blues abroad and have done 1 red which took me a while, do you think I'll be ok in Scotland? My husband is a great skier and does the hair raising blacks so not really worried about him.

Which resort do you think will be the best for us to visit?

Think we'll drive up Friday night, B&B it for Fri and Sat night so we can ski both days and then drive back Sun night.

We'll be travelling from Birmingham.

stick2000, Everywhere has snow at the moment but the forecasts for next week is all over the place. If you can wait leave it to the last minute to book up---- and see which place has the best snow. My advise now would be.....Ask the same question on the 24th snowHead

II, The only thing I'm concerned about is being able to get a cheap B&B, everywhere I seem to look on the web is expensive. Are the scottish pistes ok for low intermediates - I've heard that they can be difficult. Really excited about going, didn't think we'd be able to ski at all this year but the trip up north shouldn't cost too much.

cheers for the recommendations. I suppose there's loads of B&Bs/hotels about so we'll find one. Think there's 4 of us going now - cheaper to split petrol. Husbands suggesting sleeping in the car or staying in a tent - not too sure about that one!!

Depending on weather conditions, staying in the car or a tent could be very cold! If that's the option that you're looking at, then consider finding something like these cabins

stick2000, when we were up this last weekend we stayed at the Insh Hall Lodge which was really good, nice rooms and wonderful breakfast all in a lovely woodland setting by a loch. It's a skiing and watersports place so there's plenty to do and it's only a few miles south of Aviemore. Great if you like somewhere quiet, friendly and secluded but if you want more going on Aviemore might be a better bet.

There's more information online here and on their website here. They were pretty quiet when we went up so last minute bookings were no problem at all but it'd be a good idea to ring them to check beforehand (ring before 4PM though 'cos they all disappear off after that and don't have an answerphone - very highland Wink )

Other than that I'd suggest asking around on Winterhighland to see if anyone else can help - best of luck Smile

As for your other questions like the others have said I'd wait and see where is best nearer the time but your husband might find The Lecht a little tame but all the others would be great for him. For you I'd probably avoid Glencoe (which your husband would probably love lol) but any of the others would be okay with Cairngorm (if not busy) and Glenshee probably best and able to cater for both of you in terms of a range and variety of runs.

Scottish pistes can be challenging, the weather can be anything from gorgeous (as we had at Nevis on Saturday) to arctic winds and rain with poor to zero visibility (as we had at Cairngorm on Sunday). If you aren't an accomplished skier it's perhaps best to do something else on a day like that but for the more advanced it can offer a challenge like few others and great satisfaction if you can deal with it!

The other cheap(er) option is to go in a youth hostel www.syha.org.uk

I read somewhere that they have an offer on at the moment in a couple of hostels where they will do 3 nights for the price of 2 (if you can extend your weekend by a day)

stick2000, I've taken a tent to Glencoe, spent the evening in the Clachaig Inn and ended up sleeping in the car ! Laughing

Actually that trip had one of my best ever days skiing, certainly the deepest powder I've ever skied in Scotland, followed by one of the worst, rain on slush and a raging hangover. Happy days Laughing

Thanks for the advice guys - will look a bit closer to the time to work out which resort to go to snowHead

Elizabeth - those cabins look good, nice and cheap too. Has anyone stayed in one before???

Roga - cheers for the resort rundown, much appreciated.

Ohhhh I really hope that the snow will be good and the runs open next weekend, so looking forward to it!

I can also remember one xmas / new year period I think it would have been 95 into 96 the temps in scotland plumetted to -27 and we were camping by loch morlich ???? there was so much snow on the ground we ended up hiring x country as you couldnt get up to cairngorm........ Anyway all the food froze solid including beer and wine where the cork came through the top and one of the funniest things I have ever seen was these 2 guys from devon or something and they came running out of their tent in shorts saying it was too hot they had a bbq inside the tent Shock Shock

Yup, shame about the back corries but they'd be incredibly dangerous in icy conditions.

The forecast for Friday is still balanced on a knife edge, there's a low heading towards Scotland but if it hits south the hills with remain very cold and more snow is likely, if it's further north the freezing level will rise with rain, sleet and snow depending what height you're at. In very typical Scottish style it's too close to predict!

There's certainly been a lot of snow over the last few days, the Winterhighland webcams of the White Lady are showing it pretty loaded and whatever happens Friday there's the prospect of more snow over the weekend and into next week with the freezing level heading down again.

Seems like Glenshee has got the best of the snow today though with whiteout conditions on the mountain, depending on what the weather brings tomorrow it may well be the best place to be over the weekend (again!).

For those who are new to this game this is pretty classic Scottish weather, I well remember it like this back in the 'old' days snowHead

From the winterhighland White Lady cam/weather station, looks like it's been raining Sad ... but not too much damage so far. Probably another hour or 2 of rain to come but then the temp should drop fairly quickly I think. Overall, I don't think it'll be as bad as it might've been Confused

It seems to be the case that for a really good build up in Scotland, southern England needs to get a real soaking. This is what happened in 2001 and is happening again this year as the depressions get forced further south than has been usual in the last 20 years.

Just need it to continue for the next 3 months with the occasional ridging high pressure each weekend.

A small price worth paying, I'd say Laughing

Well I think it's safe to say that we're definitely heading up next Friday night - depending on snow conditions (will be on the net all day Friday I think). Have been looking through all the sites and think Glenshee is prob best and on their website it says you can pre-book ski's if you give at least 24 hours notice.

Have called a few B&Bs and seems as though they all have 1 double and 1 single left, want 2 doubles ideally but don't want to pay more than £25 pppn. Will have a look over weekend and discuss with the others.

Really hope there's no rain damage next week and if there is that it recovers.

Well looking at the Winterhighland Cairngorm webcams there's rain but there doesn't seem to have been an enormous loss of cover, if anything it looks as if there's as much if not a bit more snow than there was last Sunday - fingers crossed it'll get topped up as the temperatures drop and snow falls tonight and over the weekend. The Nevis cams are pretty blurry but it looks like there's been a more significant loss there, can't see anything on the Glencoe webcams so that's a mystery. Cover looks pretty good at The Lecht with superficial loss and Glenshee doesn't seem to have any cams on the site (I'm sure they had a new one set up - anyone know?).

I know we all love fresh but Scottish runs can be great in spring snow too and there's a good base build up at most of the ski areas now (with the possible exception of Nevis) which has to be helping.

All looking pretty good I think for the weekend as long as the weather is reasonable Smile

Peter S, yup that seems to be very much the case, I'm also happy with rain here if that means this amount of snow on the Scottish mountains snowHead

stick2000, best of luck with your plans snowHead

roga, lower slopes at Nevis have had the least built up and have lost a bit, but Goose Gully is loaded and with the Allt Sneachda filled in to the foot of the Quad it should provide a more resilient route to the bottom of the Quad than the fenced runs.

Having recorded a string of wind speeds of 71, 79, 88 and 81mph the Winterhighland weather station has lost contact with the outside sensors. I hope their not a few miles out of range now! Shocked

We seem to have lost this thread for a few days - conditions aren't as good as they were but the cover seems to be holding up reasonably well to recent warmer temperatures from what I can gather. There are whiteout conditions forecast tomorrow (Thursday) then a warmer spell then i believe it's likely to get colder and snowier again.

Am looking to head up again in the not too distant future (hopefully before a trip to Mammoth around the 16th Feb) so hoping it'll be decent! Toofy Grin

By all accounts, not too great over the weekend. A lot of rain and consequently the runs have started to break up. Sad

However, better news is hopefully just around the corner as it gets colder tomorrow and on current model runs, stays between chilly and absolutely arctic freezing until at least next weekend with plenty of potential for snow. Very Happy

kitenski, Shame, but although everyone talks about the great seasons of the 80s, I was there then (well in Aviemore), and that's mostly what I remember! Great snow followed by a very disappointing thaw - again and again. That's what it's like up there, and what it's always been like IME. Madeye-Smiley

Rightie ho, it's a few weeks after the last big dump and now the sloopes are looking rather the worse for wear but help apears to be at hand! Snow is forecast over the next few days with massive dumps (up to 80cm) currently on the cards for the west and a run of very cold/arctic temperatures also forecast.

If this happens we could be looking at some more classic riding in Scotland - watch that weather is all I can say, it might prove very interesting indeed! snowHead
