nickbuckers,
Esprit use- http://www.scuolasciselva.com/en/
We used Esprit when our's were tiny and have used the school for many years since.
It is an excellent school and they're very child orientated.
Have booked a family of friends with them for two weeks time when we're heading out there.

The more languages you can get into one conversation, the more you know you're definitely in the Dolomites! In Canazei, we were mostly met with Italian - our Italian is rubbish, but we found that the next language down the chain was English rather than German, I suspect in part due to the popularity of the area with the Russians, Scandis and Dutch who mostly speak English. In a shop in Canazei, the shopkeeper asked a Russian lady if she could speak English not German, please, as that was their common language.
In Alta Badia, German seemed to be the preference, which suits us better as well. I am expecting the same in Kronplatz. The explanation about Val Gardena being more Ladin explains a lot, though, I was a bit confused there! It didn't help when we started to order lunch in German, only for the lady to tell us "English please, I am Dutch"
Anyway... had a sneaky peak at the webcams again today. Looking very, very nice out there

Has anyone tried the Dolomiti Skibeep app for route planning? I was playing about with it earlier (slow day at work...) but found it not to be particularly well coded. For example, on a route from Pedraces to Lagazuoi it started off ok getting somewhere above La Villa, but then veered off to Boe, Compolongo and Porto Vescovo, before abandoning the task with a shrug!
Anyone managed to get any sense out of it?

Scarlet, haha that app has totally random routing. some routes work, others take you in totally the wrong direction. they did update it a while back, but I didn't check if it worked.

Just loving this thread, to be amongst comrades in obsession. We scheduled for our first Italian snow pounce 21 Feb for 9 days... Most of you will be on your way home or already home by then.

nickbuckers, I doubt they'd do a lesson where you drop them off but I'm sure they'd let you give him a little go in the kindergarten area as long as you supervised them.
We did the same thing in St. Anton when our oldest was 2 - the ski shop even loaned us some skis and boots for free as we'd hired our adult skis from them. (at 2 though, his feet were too small for their smallest boots so we had to double (or triple) up on socks)
Depends where you're staying - if you're in Chalet Wiesenheim, it's a long (too long) walk to the nursery slopes so you'll need to co-ordinate getting a lift from the chalet staff to pick you up, take you back to pick up your 2-y-o, take you all back to the slopes etc etc - it's do-able, and they're generally very amenable to ad-hoc pick-ups as long as they're not off doing admin, which they often are...

Yes its started. They've had 20cms just another 70cms to go at valley level !
Going to be interesting watching the webcams as the shapes gradually change though some rain likely on the very lowest slopes.
Avalanche warning is forecast to be high tommorrow and the wind looks to be quite strong at altitude until Sunday.

Anyone know any decent car parking in Corvara ?
At this rate, that's as far as we'll be getting on Saturday afternoon.
I have packed a mini rucksack with enough bits for one night in case we have to ski over to Arabba.

Latest update from the Veneto meto. Click on the link and use google translate on the page.
Highlights are: "Between Thursday and Friday will fall from 80/90 to 130/140 cm of fresh snow over the 1200/1500 m in the Dolomites
"Saturday - Will be possible further 30/60 mm, 70/90 mm of some pre-alpine areas, with as many inches (I think they mean cm) of snow above 1600/1800 m."
It sounds like there will be a temporary lull in places on friday night before it intensifies again on Saturday, though not to the extent of Thursday night/Friday morning
Also this forecast is for the Belluno region of the Dolomites which includes Arraba and Cortina. Though it will probably apply to the bolzano region (Val Gardena/Alta badia) as well

Currently chucking down in Ziano di Fiemme (950m). Cold enough and not too wet at the moment, and we had about 5cm in the past half hour or so. 25-30cm at valley level already. Looking forward to the view tomorrow before it starts to rain!

SteveM, will make a note of that.
Expect the road up to Alta Badia / Corvara should be fine. So long as I can get the car there, we can ski over if need be.
That way is a long way around though for Pam W and the sH coming from Folgarida.
Looks liek the worst of the dump will be over by tomorrow. But it's persistent snow until Monday on my forecast.

SteveM, actually, come to think of it... if you guys are transferring from Kronplatz on saturday morning, presumably by bus up to Pedraces/Corvara? any chance of an SMS latest weather update if it's really bad? (I'm expecting that road to be OK though)

Hells Bells, MCL, You can't both have all the sunshine! To be honest, with the amount of snow that's fallen in the Sud-Tirol so far, my week from 16th Feb can't be anything but fabulous - as long as there isn't too much snow - I hope yours are too!

No good at all if everything is closed and you carn't see where you are going. Pray for the snow to stop. There plenty for everyone now. Unfortunately the Atlantic is about to fire up again and the gales and rain will return next week to England. Might that mean that this pattern of persistent low pressure in northern Italy continues into the medium term ? I hope not

It appears there definitely is such a thing as too much snow. Dolomitic Superski is claiming 100cm fresh snow and all lifts shut for Arabba. I should probably be out skiing in the sunshine iin Chomonix while I can.
Wonder how many of us Birthday Bashers will be there for dinner tomorrow night?

Raven, the auguries aren't good. No road access in or out of Arabba at the moment and passes are closed till further notice. We'll need to decide tonight on a course of action - my landline is 04 79 38 46 11 - it seems our mobiles won't talk to each other.

Good luck to everyone out there this weekend. The website is showing all/most lifts closed in Arabba, Canazei/Val di Fassa, Corvara, Cortina, Civetta and Trevalli. Better over Val Gardena side, though depending on your current location that may be the least of your worries.
I just receive an email with snow alerts in the footer. Their top powder stash – 20cm in. Serre Chevalier

Traffic info here: http://www.provinz.bz.it/traffico/prodotti/bolletino-traffico-testuale.asp
They are requiring Winter Equipment, snow tyres plus chains in the car, across South Tyrol.
The Brenner is passable with care due to falling snow.
The Sella, Gardena, Pordoi & Campolongo Passes are currently closed as well as the Livinallongo valley road up to Arabba, so currently no way into Arabba. No time given for opening, but they will be working their socks off to get access to resorts clear for Saturday changeovers.
Worst case scenario, if you can get to Canazei, Corvara, or even Selva, you can ski with some essentials in a backpack over to Arabba from there assuming the lifts open and maybe collect the car once the Pass roads are clear again.
Sometimes when it says the Sella Ronda is closed, the linking lifts are actually all running, but they don't want crowds of people getting caught in the wrong valley if they have to shut a vital link early.
Wishing everyone a safe journey!

pam w, I assume you've read the email from Dolomiti Star that I posted in the bash thread. Someone has also spoken to the hotel and it looks like they are doing their best to get things reopened for tomorrow, but can only guarantee the journey as far as Alleghe at the moment.
