lynseyf - the ski buses seem to be pretty good, but I haven't any recent experience of using them as we always hire a car from Geneva. If you weren't intending to hire a car, don't change your mind because of my post. It's big extra cost for a bit more convenience. Plus, if yuo are on the bus you can have a couple of drinks after sliing and not worry about having to drive.
Having said that I don't know whether there is a regular bus service through the tunnel to Courmayeur, but I would guiess that there will be one. That's only relevant if you intend to try the other side of course.
Have fun!

I was in Courmayeur today. It was a game of three halfs. Started off from the Val Veny cable car. The snow was in great nick skiing on the Val Veny side but we moved to the other side looking for a bit of sunshine. We weren't disappointed. Again the snow was good with no bare or icy patches. It did seem a little sticky lower down. Later we headed up to ski the gabba which is higher up and catches the sun in the afternoon. The intention was to go up to Youla and Arp as the avi level was now posted as 2/5. On reaching the top we were blasted by horrendous winds and the lifts were being closed. Around 2 we retreated, and decided to have a ride up to the Torino Hut on the Mont Blanc cable car. There is a new lift under construction which looked very impressive, especially the tower cranes perched at 3500m. After a 1.5euro cappuccino we went back down.
If you look closely at the info board you will see half the lifts shut by the wind, the 2/5 avi level and the 11 degC TEMP.

Looking over the construction site at the mid station towards Courmayeur, still tons of snow despite the warm temperatures.

Very quiet day up the Aiguille du Midi,
2 laps, started at 10, off the hill by 3pm!
Skied almost all the downhill in untracked wind deposited powder of 10-20cm deep.

Idris, a few other people (not here on snowHeads) are commenting about how quiet the off piste is in Cham at the moment. Do you think it's because of the perceived poor coverage and high avy risk? We're coming up to Scandie month, so I'm wondering how long the quietness will last?

The forecast for the coming week looks promising.
I also see that it's again possible to use google translate on the Meteo France Avy forecast. Have things improved on the Avy front ?

Haven;t popped on to snowheads for ages - too many guests and parties over the xmas and new year period.
A quick update from me though:
Friday I headed up Grands Montets with a guide, looking for some fun, non-gnarly offpiste exploring to get the season properly started for me and 3 other girls. Had a great day - not really untracked powder etc, but some lovely grippy soft snow in Lavanchets bowl, and some nice stuff to play in in the Canadian and Italian bowls. He found us a couple of short untracked pitches dotted here and there too with the odd short hike. Great day out overall (with Tim Blakemore, booked through Avalanche Academy or Northern Mountain Sport, if anyone is interested).
Yesterday I was out with the same guide for day 2 of avalanche training through www.avalancheacademy.com. We headed to Le Tour. It was a really informative day, with some really great skiing (albeit thoroughly challenging and exhausting!). We got a few pitches of nice spring type snow. And of course some frozen stuff, and some really bare stuff lower down (core-shot to one ski, ouch!). Pistes in the main area were still firm and fast at the end of the day, and the home run was in surprisingly good nick despite being a little slushy (still some bare patches, but much improved over a week ago).
I'm back in Geneva for a couple of days to get my car fixed, but really looking forward to getting back to Cham hopefully on Weds - some new snow forecast!

This is the home run at GM. The pistes were hard but with a good dusting so OK, off piste was out as the vis was poor. As we retreated it had started snowing.

Rain at town level, light snow up Brevent an hour ago.
I'm in Chamonix all season and am on the lookout for new ski friends to explore the off piste with. Always up for meeting you snowheads so give me a shout if anyone's looking for a ski partner.
On a side note, does anyone have recommendations for good value for money glacier skills/ crevasse rescue courses?

I rolled into town around 8pm this evening. Cannot believe how little snow is around, looks like mid-April, not mid-Jan. And it's quite warm, I was walking around in a thin jumper and a body warmer. Compare this to last year when I was spanking cash at Snell on the warmest jacket I could find because it was so cold.

Arriving in Chamonix tomorrow. Just a little excited.
If vis is really bad is heading to those Courmayeur trees a decent option? I know Les Houches is the go-to bad vis area but from what I can tell the base isn't great under the new snow lower down? Are the trees skiable now or still a bit thin underneath?
Also GM Magic/Dream forest could be an option I guess but that's more of a ski GM, vis closes in - head to the trees type of deal.
Thanks,
Dave.

Courmayeur is really nice at the moment, was there yesterday for a good powder day. Similarly Le Tour was really good today. Whole region got 20-30cm Monday night and whilst the stuff below the new stuff is hard the top layer is still nice and soft thanks to low temperatures.
I assume GM will be mostly skied out but may well be worth a look.

Deep day up the Midi, the arete was a bit of a clusterfuck as the ropes are half up and many people were in too much of a rush to stick to the side that was finished and leave the lifties alone in their work to out up the seccnd rope..
Skied to the vallee floor, the ski our was good - getting to it however wasn't.

Skied Les Houches this morning.
Getting a bit heavy/soft . still some untouched snow to be found. Pistes nice and quiet.
Main pistes now with good coverage, some of the minor ones still have rough patches.

Skied Le Tour, Vallorcine side off through the trees this morning - pretty much the same as Les Houches by the sounds of it - getting a bit heavy but still fun. Snow due tonight I think - that would be great.

Grand Montets today so much better than Brevent / Flegere yesterday, of course its pretty much skied out but very quiet indeed, walked straight in to the top cable x2 after lunch. No sign of the forecast snow yet an pretty warm in resort, windy up high.
