hi guys and gals ..just got back from morzine on saturday 22nd march. only had 1 wk there but we had snow almost every day at the top(avoriaz) etc. most days vision was really bad but still nice fresh ish snow! weds and thurs 19th 20th we had lovely sunny days , so we went over to switz, loads of powedry off piste !!! great stuff. fri 21st it snowed all day , about 400 -500 mm in morzine itself. we spent the day going thru the woods finding huge mounts of fresh powder to make superb runs , snowing so much that it was covering all our tracks ...amazing . lots of snow aroubd , every day snow felt different, a quick frezze and all that powder could go into bumpy ice patches...!! nice

OMG, two days from now I'll be slipping down the slope in front of the Yeti with a HUGE grin on my face. Cross-eyed with excitement but still have to work, arrgh. Just hope these rising temperatures don't mean it'll be porridge.

Yes, Lou, our snowdances at the snowzoo seem to be working...
Did not ski yesterday but son reported some softening and slush late afternoon . Powder runs just off the pistes looked a bit choppy and windblown under the new snow this morning and there was icy rubble under the few inches of fresh powder. By this pm the sunshine had made it less icy, but all the powder well tracked by then. Good piste skiing (Myrtille very skiable today) and lovely blue skies with puffy white clouds. Amazingly few people in queues - walked straight onto Ranfolly lift.

wallas, You could base yourself there and go up to Avoriaz which is not a hassle.
Or what about Flaine?

Just to report back from another great day. The off piste was great - there was enough snow overnight to cover most tracks, and I was skiing on cold light powder right up to 4pm.
Because of all the fresh powder kicking around on the pistes, they got chopped up pretty quickly and really gave your legs "the burn". I found it easier to stay off piste all day. Once everything is groomed overnight, the piste conditions should be excellent.
The best thing about today was the lack of people...no queues anywhere, and I went over to the Crozat bowl after lunch expecting it to be trashed but there were only a handful of tracks down there. Even skiing back to Linga at the end of the day, there was loads of off piste that hadn't been touched. This is why I love end of March/April in the Portes du Soleil. Great skiing on empty slopes.
Light snow is falling at the moment - not sure if it will amount to anything substantial...will keep you posted.
wallas, would definitely recomend Avoriaz - the skiing up here is really good and looks set to last

PhillipStanton, is Crozat the bowl that we wanted to ski but was closed on Saturday?

wallas, no problem. There's a number of routes up, 2 by bus (Ardent / Les Lindarts or Prodains) or 1 up the Super Morizne gondola and a 2 / 3 other lifts to take you into Avoriaz proper - go for it.

Definitely feeling srping like today, if not summer. Mont Chery was good this morning, but even by 11:15 the top slopes were getting soft. This afternoon, even the black off Chamossiere was soft, although still plenty of fun. If the temperature drops tonight/tomorrow (along with a little bit of snow) conditions will be improved considerably.

Does anyone know what dates the Pleney side closes, we have been told April 20th but I am not certain, we head out on April 19th so I am assuming we'll be going to Avoriaz to ski every day, thinking about that, what condition is that god awful blue from the top of Supermorzine in?

We are off to Morzine tomorrow morning, hiring a car in Geneva. There is a forcast for some light snow on sunday the 6th. As we leave to go back to Geneva at about 6.30am, is it advisable to hire snow chains or do they keep the roads pretty clear?

Standee - IIRC then you have to have snow chains or snow tyres if the lights are flashing on the snow tyre signs - usually accompanied by a gendarme road block to check compliance.

So the answer is- Yes I need to hire snow chains at geneva for my trip OR could I hire them in Morzine on saturday for my journey back sunday morning?
