[quote="5RED"]2 things wrong with Austrian skiing...
1. Crucifixes everywhere
2. Dodgy war memorials to WWII "heroes"

I had a walk around the big onion domed church and grounds in SOLL.The grave stones with ceramic pictures on them of men in Nazi uniform all had the faces scratched off.

It's been two years since I've been to Austria, but the only thing wrong is that disgusting stuff everyone but me seems to love; weißbier!
Going to France (involuntary shudder) for the first time in 10yrs. How many things are wrong there...........................

Last year in Italy (sud Tirol admittedly) they rang the chuffing church bells on the quarter hour every quarter hour, ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT
a 7am start sounds very civilised by comparison

Back from the Arlberg a couple of weeks ago, and with the perspective of a good think about it, I can confirm that there is nothing about Austrian skiing that would have me go back in a hurry. Food was the same price as France, for smaller portions, hard to find with very few mountain restaurants, and having then given up and skiied into town the entire sodding place was closed to the point we couldn't find anywhere that was serving lunch, accommodation was same standard, ski hire was incredibly expensive, and the beer was the same price as every French mega-resort I've been drinking in over the last few years.
The absolutely best thing about Austrian resorts is the quality of the lifts. Everything else was, erm, a bit meh. We sat around and honestly couldn't work out if we were a different resort or country to the one everyone on SH is talking about. And not an Austrian twin in sight.

Two things wrong with Austria compared with France for me are;
1/ I cannot spend as much money on food and drink
2/ I cannot be as bored at après
I will add a third, everyone doesn't speak English

Mistress Panda, which resort were you in? There is no greater Francophile than me, but your post just makes no sense to me as a generalisation about Austria. I've just been in Ski Amadé, where there are gazillions of mountain restaurants, all serving large portions of food (I don't particularly like most traditional Austrian food, but that's another matter) at significantly lower prices than in the large French resorts I've been to. And St Anton seemed similarly well served when I was there a couple of years ago, though a bit more expensive, and I grant you that Lech is expensive (but would doubt that it is difficult to find lunch in town, when there are so many non-skiing snow-bunnies around.) I can't comment on the price of beer, as I don't drink it.

Mistress Panda, I'll second the consensus. I've skied in pretty much all the main European counties and Austria is my fav. I haven't been to the Arlberg though, but being able to get a bowl of goulash and a beer for €7.80 seems prety good value to me.

In my mind Austrian skiing is more like skiing the smaller French resorts where commercialism has not taken over and where the huts are run by mountain people.

last trip i was on, €7.80 wouldn't even buy the beer, let alone the goulash!
lasagne and coke for €31 anyone?
hint: that wasn't in Austria

Thirded - wouldn't worry me if there was nowhere else to go - as for drinks, no more expensive than the city centre bars down the road.

As Spyderman observed to me the other day, Austrian food is comprised largely of dumplings, with either gravy or custard on them.

HutToHut, well, one of them is dumplings. Can't think of another at the moment. (And I like sauerkraut and potato salad and gulaschsuppe, so it's not all bad food-wise.)

I am off to Mayrhofen tomorrow for my first time in Austria so was well amused and interested by this thread / have made a phone note of all the puddings - which is funny as I am also on the slimming thread 5:2 diet haha
Defo gotta try the boob fag ash wonder
Is there a good spa facility in Mayrhofen? Steam sauna etc?
Also is the arlburg or arlhorn accessible from there?
