Neilski, counter-intuitively, the non-motorway (valee vert) route is better if the weather is bad. That's because the road is a slow, gradual climb - whereas the road between Cluses and Taninges goes up and down a ruddy great big hill that can be horrible in the snow.
The Cluses route is also about 10 minutes slower and more expensive.
Ironically, though, I tend to go the Cluses route as it requires less thinking / concentrating late at night and early in the morning when we tend to arrive and depart.
Just to be a bit more expansive on the route:
• Exit at junction 15, which is about 1.5km after the toll booth and is signposted for “La Valle Verte”
• Turn left at the end of the slip road
• Get in the right hand lane
• Ignore the first exit
• Take the second exit, clearly segregated turn right for the D9, sign-posted for Samoens
• Straight over the first roundabout – just after the exit
• After around 5 minutes, turn right at the next roundabout onto the D907 – signposted Taninges / Samoens
• Just follow your nose straight on until you reach Taninges (15-25 minutes) – following the signposts for Taninges / Samoens / Les Gets – the speed limit through villages is generally 50
• About 100m after the bridge in the centre of Taninges there is a left turn sign-posted for Les Gets

I normally just use the magic Holiday Autos 15% discount link. This usually gets you a car with Alamo.
Last season I managed to get good deals out of Avis, but then the toe-rags hit me for all sorts of (mainly) spurious charges. One of the charges was for late return of a car on a Monday morning - they claimed I'd returned the car at 14:00 when I'd returned it at 5:45 and was on a 7:00 flight. It was the devil's own job to get the money back as they were demanding a copy of the boarding card - which it's not my habit to keep.

Neilski, we also take the Vallee Vert route. First time we drove to LG we 'followed the map' - there was really heavy snow from well the other side of Geneva and so masses in Cluses and as FlyingStantoni, says

and I think we stopped in Chatillon and bunged the chains on - and then had to follow a BMW for miles that did not have winter tyres or chains and it was tortuous.
The Cluses route is also horrid first thing in the morning if you are delivering anybody back to the airport with a bit of a hangover.
Good thing about the Vallee Vert route is that you can stop at an excellent Casino along the way to Taninges and stock up - but you won't be needing to do that this time round.

It's worth saying that Cluses can also get very snarly on transfer days as it can pick up traffic from Flaine as well.

Neilski, well we will have to try not to be too boring when we meet up with you - if we have had time to ski ourselves by then. I think I left the kit all out and ready to go when last there in October but you never know what you might find you have to deal with.

FlyingStantoni,
It's known as the "Tourist Tax". I had a 3 month palaver with (again I think Avis),
"We've charged you £500 as you broke the brake lines"
(I see. So I drove all the way down from the Alps with no brakes?)
"Ah, sorry, our mistake. You lost all the hub caps"
(What hub caps? the car was on winter tyres and steel rims without hubcaps)
"Ah, sorry, our mistake, you scratched the roof with the ski rack"
(What roof rack? You didn't have one available when I tried to hire it)
I ended up talking to EU head office in Paris, following a mighty stroppy letter to the MD and a stroppy phone call from my credit card issuer. Apparently this wasn't the first time and they'd just fired the GVA desk manager.

So, to all in the PdS, have the snow conditions taken a battering with the rain today?
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
Ardoyne, It's hacked it down with rain but there is still shed loads of snow. As soon as the temp drops and a bit of fresh snow falls (which is forecast) it'll be back to cracking conditions. It would be nice if it stopped raining here in Les Gets around now though ... all a little damp and tedious!

Hi Lou We're going back to Morzine for a couple of weeks to our usual place downstairs from FlyingStantoni. We're driving down for the first time though and I'm a bit nervous about that. Are you going to Les Gets?

geetee, yup, les Gets for us Driving's great, bet you won't fly again. Hoping to finally get to St Jean d'Aulps for a day to ski this time (have walked there in summer) and maybe Praz de lys Sommand too, if I can be dragged off Mont Chery.

Lou,
Thoroughly recommend a day in St. Jean d'Aulps. Only a short drive and a really chilled out place.
If you get an early start you can do a full circuit then up the gondola for lunch at La Licorne followed
by skiing everything on the Grand Terche side
If it's a later start ski the Grand Terche side first then round the ciircuit and have lunch at the little restauarant below the Col des Follys (forget the name).
A fantastic little resort and usually a bargain daypass in Jan or March.
Just over a month 'til I'm out - getting itchy feet!

Lou, we took DD up to La Grande Terche last season and had a very nice day out there. We had lunch on a sunny terrace beside the top of the gondola and it was very pleasant. It was definitely worth a day trip.
DJL we'll look out for the little restaurant you mentioned next time.

Lou, sure you would enjoy it . We usually go round the circuit, stop for chocolate at the little restaurant - Follys?? - and say we will be back in an hour, then up the gondola a few runs there and on to lunch.

this has been the worst 2 days of my snow watching life. going out jan 2nd but i,m really worried, getting colder but no signs of snow apart from late tonight/tom morning( chamonix meteo says about 20 to 40 cms a average, that would be lush) but lou what is the cannon situation like out there, are there enough to make lots of the blooming stuff should mother nature keep things dry,i would appreciate it if you could draw me a map locating every single cannon, its snow out put,and then, can you turn on everyone at arround 4 tomorrow afternoon when the wind changes to the north,in fact i would like 50cm,s at resort level on my arrival, thank you

Avoriaz is due to open this weekend with a demo day and music festival.
I was going to head up, but maybe it will be very limited due to the rain, and busy due to the above? Anyone been to this event in previous seasons?

Whitters, the demo day is usually very good. Lots of tents by the top of Prodains - leave an id and take out anything you want for up to an hour.

Actually, I'd take it with you. Some of the tents ask for a holding credit card if they don't think your ID is suitable.
And they don't actually sell anything on the spot.

Brace yourselves ... I saw one of the new Les Gets "red eggs" today ... and it was MOVING!
Still looking like a mudbath at the bottom of the lift and they were delivering porta cabins this afternoon but can't be that far off completion.
Sad to report the snow in LG has taken a hammering with the rain of the past few days but set to get colder and snow is on the way.

Rain had an impact on the snow but there is still more than I've seen at this point in December on may seasons that have turned out to be crackers.

my poor little nephews were so excited to see all the snow in Avoriaz over the last week. Yesterday they were so upset to actually see the road, and were worried about the horses -how can they pull their sleighs without snow, bless them. Aunty told them that all will be ok when they arrive after Christmas - so everything crossed now!!

Kiters, looking a lot more promising today - the road has gone white
Really sunny today though, could do with a few more inches before I pop up for the day this weekend.
