rob@rar, I already have a back up plan in progress.

We got our son booked on Eurostar at 8 p.m. Saturday evening to Paris - did the booking about 2.30 this afternoon but it was a real mission - according to OH who was doing it - got the seat then took 12, yes 12, goes to get the credit card accepted but he succeeded in the end. This is in case the BA flight from Heathrow at 8 p.m. doesn't look as if it will fly.
All so that he can get here and then fly out of Geneva Sunday morning with our grand-daughter back to the States.
Daughter meanwhile thinks they are being bussed back from Courchevel this weekend.
rob@rar, some may be wishing that the 'Real Lardy Bus' had been arranged after all.

on the radio a guy from newcastle uni said that the last time this volcano erupted it lasted on and off for 2 years. This could impact for months to come

Jo225, but now I have found this on Geneva airport website:
Situation at 6:00 pm, April 16, 2010 --- The Airport informs passengers that following a decision of the Federal Office for Civil Aviation, Swiss Airspace will be closed as from today 11:59 pm until April 17 09:00 am. This closure is likely to be extended depending on the development of the volcanic ash.
Passengers should contact their airline and check flight status information for all destinations.
Next update on 17 April 7:30 am.

Helen Beaumont, I could have a chat with a friend who runs SnowExpress buses if needs be to try and arrange some buses (unless the real lardy bus makes a resurgence). I am really hoping that it will be sorted by then though.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Ouch .. Ryanair saying no flights until Monday ... maybe a good financial call as a disrupted schedule is bad ... but not good for travellers.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Ryan air now said they are not flying before Monday or Tuesday!

I'm trying to figure out an alternative - I can get a bus to Paris, but tomorrow all the trains to BSM seem full.
Trains to BSM? I haven't seen a train for a couple of weeks around these parts... they are on strike.

I will book an outbound ferry crossing for Sat am with Norfolkline for £20, and deal with the return crossing and other arrangements if it is necessary.

Dwarf Vader, any decisions yet? I'm really hoping it works out for you. How about flying from Scotland - flights seem to be going again from there for now.

sarep, there's a lot of European airports affected too.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I mentioned this on the EoSB thread but I heard on the grapevine today from people that seem to know about flying things as I'm no expert personally that it is unlikely there will be any planes going anywhere until at least the middle of next week and maybe longer. Certainly would be a good idea to have a back up plan in place for the EoSB or anyone else travelling next weekend just in case next weekend's flights are disrupted too. There may be delays that affect things too from the backlog of flights that may build up. Definitely it is the right decision not to fly with the ash in the air as Michelle pointed out earlier due to the aircraft whose engines failed that time flying through it.
It's a shame, lousy timing for anyone travelling this weekend.
If it helps anyone...there are a bundle of Chamonix based transfer companies taking folks up to Calais tomorrow, returning Sunday... I can post contact details if anyone needs them

Anybody know what the French motorways are like? OH driving back tomorrow . . . . . are they gummed up or OK?
Outbound ferry booked for next Saturday morning, and if my plane goes as planned, £22.50 is not a lot to lose is it? I will book return crossing only if I need to.

I looked at PO ferries, I was suprised how easy it was to book a crossing, loads of spaces on the few dates I selected

Now, experts are saying that the Eyjafjallajokull eruption could likely trigger activity at Mount Katla, a nearby glacier volcano that's even larger and potentially more dangerous. It's not erupted since 1918, but "volcanologists" are saying it's very close to blowing its top. We can already expect the volcanic ash to hang around in the skies for the next couple of weeks, but if Katla goes then it might last for months. Back in 1783 another volcano in Iceland caused thick fog across Europe and even spread as far as the US, for eight whole months.

VolklAttivaS5, I might give my snowexpress friend a call then to see whether we could rustle up a coach or two at the last minute to get us to Geneva overnight on Friday. I assume we can transfer to the already booked Lardy Buses there. They'be been running every weekend since the start of the season and tomorrow is their last planned return so I expect it wouldn't be too much hassle - we could look into offering the return leg to any air passengers stranded at Geneva airport??? Hmmmmmm - now there's an idea! I'll keep you posted.

Had to rebook onto a later flight on Saturday. My train tickets are useless now, but I should be on the way unless it gets grounded as well.

sarep, well I wouldn't want anyone to spend money unnecessarily like, but if I was planning to travel next weekend then I'd definitely at least have a look into getting a car together with 4 of you or something to save money, and like Helen Beaumont says, at least you only lose the 20 quid ferry crossing then or whatever. Would be worth having the conversation with people I think. Or at least see what's available. I think Ski Bus UK go to and from Tignes but that obviously isn't any good for the Three Valleys! Think the person that runs it is pretty flexible so it might be worth seeing what they are doing if by time middle of next week is here the flights are still grounded.
I'm not trying to get out of the UK next weekend as I'm not going to the EoSB or anything, just passing on what I heard today.
Also, yes about the other larger volcano nearby potentially erupting. If that one goes we won't be flying anywhere for a good few weeks at least I think! Hopefully it will hang on to it for now!

The latest VAAC ash map shows stuff still hanging around (especially over the Alps) at 1pm (12:00 GMT) tomorrow:
This is the info that NATS uses so expect another announcement from them soon.
IMHO, it looks like the thing is not going to clear for at least several days.

That was a bit of a waste of time because there aren't any flights on Saturday going anywhere as far as I know, according to Sky News earlier on anyway.

stevev, I've seen loads and heard loads of differing times etc. It's all speculation. - thats what the British press do best.
The only people I am Listening to is EasyJet and NATS. If Easyjet let me transfer to a later flight on Saturday they must think there is a chance of it happening - They are more in the know than us.

VolklAttivaS5, I really don't want to spoil the fun ... but about 1/3 of the UK is now 'OK' with the major concentrations heading East 'apace'. Sure, things can change but Vesuvius could blow tomorrow as well ... if I had to have a contingency in my life for every eventuality I would spend my life living up my back bottom ... if all The Icelandic volcanoes blow then the EOSB will be the least of all our problems ...
